I'm trying to find out if a Captain M'Donald (later written Mac)steaming about the Clyde coast between about 1831 - 1851. He seems to have worked on the steamers owned by (maybe) G&J Burns and then by David Hutcheson & Co.Was Capt. M'Donald (a)one person rather than a couple in succession (b)if his forename was Donald and/or (c) if he was the "captain of a vessel" who allegedly fathered an ancestor of mine about 1830. Capt M'Donald variously captained the Maid of Morvern, the Brenda, the Shandon, the Tartar and the Duntroon Castle. He appears in ads on the front page of The Scotsman, going about the West Coast of Scotland; and he appears all out of sorts in the Glasgow Herald after an embarrassing collision with a paddle steamer that apparently had no-one on watch.
By the way, the Scotsman now has online archives from 1817 - including loads of ads for these ships and routes and all sorts of sailing information.

Really interesting! I like the way you have thrown your nets out to sea and brought back the bits and pieces and put them together for an awesome treasure chest.

It is nice to see the generations passing the info along.

Thanks for letting me share.

Very interesting social document. Was surfing for information on extended family of Alexander Wilson, yachtmaster of Auchendaroch, largs, specifically his cousins John and James houston. All three were leading racing yachtsmen and I wondered if if they might be following in some kind of family tradition. As T Houston, was master of of a passenger steamship owned by Young, also an employer of Wilson, this might be a lead. I'm always happy to hear about other potential sources of information.
many thanks.

Your site is an absolute goldmine of information on the history of the Clyde steamers and your sources seem most respectable. I am ever-so-slowly developing a website on this topic and have been able to corroborate much of your data from the ClydeSite database at(http://www.clydesite.co.uk/asp/search.asp).
I will be including a link to your site, with your permission, and may seek your consent to include extracts from your data.
Your email address suggests you are one of the noble Cook families. My mother was Anne Stewart Crawford Hamilton Cook from Stevenston in Ayrshire and, latterly, Isle of Arran, where I spent my boyhood days. I'm now retired and live in British Columbia, Canada.
Congratulations on your website.

For a year I have been stumbling around the internet researching my gg grandfather and members of his family.
I have known since I was a young lad that my gg grandfather was a Captain on the Clyde - his was CAptain John McKinnon. I have in the last few days received a photo of his headstone at Gourock cemetery. I also received a photo of his sons headstone, he was also a Captain on the Clyde shipping. John McKinnon was awarded a medal and a silver tea service for rescuing people during the floods of the river Clyde back in the 1800's. Does anyone know of any place where I can find out anything about the old ferry master/pilots?

My other request is for someone to point me in the right direction for establishing if Captain John's silver service is on display at Stirling Castle - I was told last month that it is. I haave sent a couple of emails but so far no response. This is a plaintiff plea for help from Perth in Western Australia. Heeeeeeeeeeeelp!
