I am looking for the descendants of John William Smith who emigrated to NZ in April 1875. Born in England, he spent time in Chester, Illinois with cousins (my paternal family) on his way to San Francisco. I have a copy of a nice long letter where he describes his train trip between St. Louis and San Francisco, prior to boarding "Mikado." I would love to share it with his descendants.

City of New York, Arrival in Auckland NZ 22 October 1879 Have you succeeded in locating the passenger list? From NZ Herald Why did your ancestors decide to immigrate to NZ? Probably to make a better life for them and their two children Comments:
I only have the arrival of the City of New York from San Francisco, not the departure date.
Thomas, Clara and their two children Silvanus ag. 3 and Mabel ag.2 The two children were'nt mentioned on the Passenger List.
I'm not sure why they left Grass Valley, California but presume it was to make a better life for the family.

In researching Edwin Mawney Sayers and his son in law Godfrey F Chamberlain. Godfrey worked as a clerk in the Sydney office of the Panama and New Zealand Steam Company between 1866 and 1869. It was reported that he suddenly left with a large amount of money and disappeared. This put the company into financial difficulty. It was postulated that he jumped on a ship and headed for the United States.
Godfrey's father was was John Chamberlain. The only John Chamberlain I found was as a captain of the whaler "Metaris" which visited Sydney in 1869 and again in 1877. I think he was based in New Zealand.
Information on the owners of the Panama and New Zealand Steam Company and John Chamberlain would be appreciated.

I am searching for passengers Mr and Mrs Sellars, Child and 1 servant who arrived in NZ on the H.m. 'Cyphrenes'. Minimal detail is on the Auckland City Library site - Mr Mrs child + servant.
No other detail about the passengers. I am trying to find where I can view the Passenger List for this particular voyage. The child was possibly my grandfather and his parents my great-grandparents.. They were born in Devon and Hertfordshire in England.
The 'Cyphrenes' was 1 of a group of mail ships which also carried a large number of passengers. It sailed the San Francisco-Australia-New Zealand mail route.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.
