My reason for making this enquiry is that I am presently researching my McCracken Family - James H McCracken being my gggGrandfather who came to NZ in 1856 with the 65th Regiment. In his war record it is said that he trained in Jersey during 1855, yet I am finding very hard to find it there was a Military Training Camp on Jersey. Have you ever found any evidence that there was such a Training Camp in the Channel Islands

I have decided to contribute to this site as it is everyone's combined pieces of information that helps to create a picture for us all. My ancestors were Julien Marie and Marie-Louise Le Gal who settled in the Dunedin area. I notice that there were a family Le Gros, and a family Verchere also on the same ship who I am presuming came from the Channel Islands. Although the ship grounded and finally broke up, all passengers made it safely to land but had to leave all their possessions on the ship.

Comments:
My great grandfather, Walter Scadding, died in Australia in 1896. He was a steward on ships plying the Eastern Coast of Australia. After he died my great grandmother took her two sons, Ernest Walter Scadding and Alfred James Scadding back to Southampton. Walter's father's name was James Scadding, and he was a cabinetmaker. Walter's mother was to Izet or Eliza Scadding (nee Coombes?). Walter was a porter at the Royal Yacht Club Hotel in St Peter's Port in 1871. According to the 1851 census, Walter, then aged 8 years, was living with his parents at 117 Well Road, St Peter's Port. Also living there was his sister, Emily, aged 5 years.
I know very little about my Scadding ancestors prior to their going to Australia and would be grateful for any information or suggestions to follow up as it has been a brick wall in my research for some time.

Charles was a very tall man and a particular favourite of my late father... they spent a lot of time together when he was a young boy.

From what I know, Charles was headed for Invercargill, but I don't know any dates at all.

Have you succeeded in locating the passenger list? George emigrated via Australia and I do not have ship details
Did they go back to the Channel Is. for a visit? Yes.
Comments:
We have no record of why he attended Elizabeth College from Okehampton, Devon, however we believe he did stay with relatives at the time. We are particularly keen to see if there is any photographic record of his time there and other info.
George married Annie Gordon in 1871 in Devon and emigrated to Australia and became a Police Magistrate and Coroner in Moama in the 1870's and their daughter Cordelia born there in 1878. Her brother Charles was the NSW Customs Officer. George and family emigrated to NZ and George worked for the Tax Department in Christchurch and Wellington in the 1890's. They lived in Hataitai, Wellington and have numerous descendents, but no Maxwells. George's younger brother Joseph was Commissioner (GM) of NZ Railways in the late 19C. George died in 1903 and is buried with his wife Annie in Karori Cemetery.

At this stage we have no information about other Channel Is relatives who may have emigrated to NZ

My Great, Great G'father and his wife Ann settled in NZ in the late 1800s and were in Guernsey between approx 1851 and 1872. They had a daughter Eliza Ann in 1852 and Samuel Clayton Arthur James in 1866. They lived at 28 Piette Road and Bouet Road in St Peter's Port, Guernsey during those years. Sam James may have travelled to the US at some point as he had an interest in Freemason/Mormon doctrine. Eliza Ann married Thomas Burnham in St Peter's Port in 1871 aged 19 - they eventually settled in NSW Australia. I have 'hit a brick wall' in my search so to speak and would welcome ANY information someone may have. Samuel C.A. James married in New Zealand and he is my Great Grandfather. Thanks

Hi,
I left a posting dated 2006-12-05 (still there) re HARTWELL & PIRIE immigrants to Auckland in late-1870s. Both families settled in suburbia. Sadly I changed my email address soon after my posting so would have missed any enquiries arising!
My book "Florrie from the Kings' Table: Her Ancestry" was printed in 2008. In part (3 out of 26 chapters) it is a social history of Guernsey that treats several St Peter Port families - with a little women's secret business slipping in. Priaulx Library & La Societe Guernesiaise have copies. Any interested descendants of abovenamed HARTWELL & PIRIE FAMILIES will learn much about their ancestry by contacting me or accessing my book.

Have you succeeded in locating the passenger list? Working on this
Did they go back to the Channel Is. for a visit? No
Comments:
I have traveled to Jersey Is three times to look at my family tree and have found out a lot back to 1450. Up to now most " Le Bas" in Australia and NZ are related, even two families on Jersey and in England all go back to a common Jean in 1450 who came over from France. Even this last year a Argintinian " Le Bas " is related. Still so much to do I will be going back to Jersey again this year 2008.

What motivated your ancestors to settle in NZ? William Henry DE LA MARE.
Have you succeeded in locating the passenger list? Arrived 1864 and settled Christchurch.
Did they go back to the Channel Is. for a visit? No
Comments:
We know very little about William Henry other than that he became a grocer in Christchurch. There are two opposing family stories, one that he came out to NZ from Guernsey in 1864 as a young man (his son was born in 1877). His father's name was probably Joseph. The other that he was born in NZ in 1850 and it was Joseph that came from Guernsey. If he did come out in 1864 (or any other year) we would like to find some record to prove it.

Did they go back to the Channel Is. for a visit? Yes. John (?) Bestic after living in ustralia
Comments:
My grandmother claimed that Reverend Bestic went to the Channel Islands after living in australia. He has made, or inherited quite a lot of money and gathered some of his relatives from poor conditions in England and settled them in the Channel islands. The government tried to tax his earnings but he took his case to the House of Lords and won, which helped establish the Channel Islands tax status. I have no idea if the tale is true

Soon I expect to publish my family history book. Anything further on either family would be great.
