I can find no official documents on Thomas English. However, the memoirs of Ida Clark, granddaughter of Thomas, suggest he was married to Jane Wicker, and that his father was William. She details his children who are all found in the early 1800s in Cape Girardeau. There is a tombstone in Jackson, Cape Girardeau, Mo which places his birth at 1751, although the memoir places it in 1754. He is also an active participant in the creating of a Baptist church, Bethel Chapel, in Cape Girardeau. He could be the Thomas English in Virginia's 8th foot regiment during Revolutionary War. There is also a Thomas English granted land in Washington County after the war.

Alexander Crawford English, b abt 1807 in SC, married Margaret Rose Lewis abt 1838; purchased land in Pickens Co, Al, in 1820 for cash, but they lived in Talladega after they married. The 1840 AL Census, lists 'farmer' as his occupation. By 1860 he had totally disappeared. Learned he died in 1951 in Maury Co TN, but don't know why he went back or what happened to him. They had 5-6 children, Emma Harriet, James Crawford, Sarah Margaret, Laura Julia [the census taker wrote LORD, but she was my GG, so I know it was a mistake), Thomas, and possibly one more. Margaret Rose was quite a bit younger than he was and remaried after Civil War to a Dr. D E D Echold, who had also been a boarder.
The Waxhaw Settlement people, and perhaps Maury TN people also, tended to marry cousins, and I admit I am totally confused by all the Crawfords, Lewis's, Craigheads, and Alexanders. Where I seem to be most frustrated is the English line and where it came from. I suspect that there may have been some same name marriages and even Uncles marrying nieces as this would explain the same name thing. If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it. Sorry this is wordy.

They came to CAN from IRE in 1821. Since William & Catharine both died in March Twp., ON, CAN. in 1829 there are no family records for Ireland. I have no parents names for William & Catharine had a brother Edward in Castlecomer, along with his family.
William & Catharine petitioned twice in Canada to bring Edward & family to Canada; both petitions were denied.
They are both Protestant............Had 3 sons:

Rosanna b. 6 Feb 1766 d. 12 Sept 1818 TN- Rosanna's brother was HENRY ENGLISH & her father was ROBERT ENGLISH--they both signed MICHAEL HYDER'S will. There is also a Bill of sale between Robert Wiseman, husband of JANE ENGLISH. ROBERT ENGLISH, conveying to SAMUEL ENGLISH their interest in the same slaves. Another deed is recorded in "White Co TN between Thomas Sample & SAMUEL ENGLISH where Thomas acknowledges receipt of his share of the Estate of ROEBERT ENGLISH of Burke Co. Robert may have died in Burke Co. Thomas Sample is probably the husband of another daughter.

Robert English died before 1920 Alabama census. He was in the 1900 census. He married Adaline Day 19 SEP 1883 in Barbour Co. Alabama. I have his children forward, but I do not know his father's name nor can I locate Robert before the 1900 Census, yet according to the 1900 Census he and his parents were for Alabama.
Also I would like to know how to add his family to your Web site.

My english anscestry comes via James Leroy English from Lauderdale co. Alabama. What I found in a 1860 census was Mary English as his mother with another brother John Simpson English. Some of your research through Matthew English has his mother as Polly English. I have most of the family line for James Leroy and John Simpson.

They had 8 children, 4 of whom survived - John, Nellie, Walter, and Robert. Walter was my father. I would like to find any information on William, Margaret and Susan.
I think there is a connection with a family named Vaughn, but I am not sure.

Joshua moved sometime prior to the 1860 census where he appears with his family in the Town Of Montgomery, Texas where he is a hotel owner. By 1880 he was living in Bryan, TX with his family.

John English was the youngest son of Michael English of Waterford and then NY City; John was born in 1836 at Castle Richard, Townland of Glencairn, Parish of Tallow, Waterford. Alice married Michael Daly in Cohoes and Honora remained single. I have found immigration records for Honora with her parents;Patrick and Honora English left Ireland with their daughter Honora on the Ship Neptune arriving in NY on Mar 24,1869. Alice had come earlier on June 11, 1862, on the Ship Manhattan. There is an older Patrick English in Cohoes in 1860, but I can't connect these families to my Michael in NY City. Michael died in 1866 age 72. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in NY City.

According to a Declaration to Obtain Army Benefits, dated March 11. 1839, Robert English from Antrim, Ire.(who is said to have married a Sarah Ann Crooks, also from Ireland), came to America in 1774, landing in August in Philadelphia. In 1775, Robert entered service in the Revolutionary War and left service after four years, four months, and as a Prisoner of War. One account indicates that Robert had 7 sons and 3 daughters, the seven sons settling in 7 different states: William English in Indiana, James English in GA., Robert Jr. to Colorado. Henry English came to N.C. and is buried in the English Family Cemnetery in North Cove, NC where I live. Names of the other 3 sons and where they went is not known at the time of this writing. It is assumed that Robert married a second time and that some of these ten children had a different mother since Sarah Ann Crooks was only 24 years of age when she died. In 1790 a Robert English and son Henry are found in Washington Co., TN. In 1796-1798 a Robert and Henry English appear on the Carter Co., TN tax list. There is some indication that in the early 1800's our mysterious Robert English is found in Wythe Co., VA and listed on the 1820 Federal Census. I do hope that others are searching for this same Robert English and that together we can find the facts!
