Zaroga,I'm trying to find information about Zara Stubbs and your name seems to be a derivative of his. Here's what I know.

He was born in Marlboro Co., SC, probably the Red Hill area of what's now Bennettsville, in 1812. He signed as a witness a land document in Coweta Co., GA in 1835. He was in Macon, AL for the 1840 census. He married Caroline Louisa Cooper 7 July 1845 in Marengo Co., AL. Their first son, my maternal g-grandfather Thos.Jefferson Stubbs, was born 1847. Altogether Zara and Caroline had 8 children. Zara died 1863, Caroline 1865. Thos. and Caroline's sister wound up raising the other children.

I also know on later censuses Zara Stubbs, Jr., b.1852, was erroneously listed as Sarah, female. I think the same may have happened to him when he was young, as I believe Zara and Sarah were pronounced similarly in that day.

I have traced every descendant of John Stubbs of Marlboro Co., and have found no Zara. Unfortunately, before 1850 only the heads of households had names on the censuses. All other house members were just tallied by age.

One possibility I'm following is Silas Stubbs, son of James Stubbs, 3rd son of John Stubbs, might be his father. Silas had a son the right age in the 1820 census.

It also shows him living next to David Stubbs, 16-26 y.o., which would be too young to be his older brother David, who would have been 35 y.o. in 1820.

Another neighbor is Luis (Lewis?) Stubbs, who is the right age to have been his cousin, Lewis Caraway Stubbs, 2nd son of John Saeger Stubbs. Another neighbor is a Swain, which I can't make out the first name, but it looks like it starts with a Z, maybe Zaob.

A year later, 1821, Silas died, leaving 3 males and 3 females under the age of 10.

Somewhere just after John Saeger Stubbs' two sons, John and Lewis moved to AL and were buying land and having children there.

I'm thinking maybe John or Lewis took in some or all of Silas' children, and Zara was one of them.

Do you know anything, and does this sound plausible with your knowledge of GA Stubbses?

Thank you.

Hey Girlfriend! Long time no see. I was family caregiving for several years, and with those responsibilities passed on--no pun intended--I'm back to genealogy. We have a reunion going on--second year this year--a biracial family reunion. I've done lots more research on William Stubbs Sr. and I'll get that to you. Went this summer to where he was assigned during the Revolutionary War according to his pension records. Still have not located his grave. Took lots of leads, but no grave! Researching Henry M. Goff and his descendants out of Surry County, NC. His wife was Catherine (Kitsy) Goff. I think he died prematurely and his youngest two children (Azariah and Henry M) went to live with Jim and Sarah Williamson in Horry County, NC.

If any of this rings a bell, please contact me. Thank you!

I am just starting to look at some of the Dansby history. My aunt has most of it and is supplying it to me in spurts. Appears that we are from the Jonathan Dansby of Montgomery Al. side. Many moved to Bosque County, Texas. Some mention of South Carolina and Tennessee, too. Looks to be Swan family in Alabama, too.

I couldn't help but notice that you had the surname GOFF listed. I am looking for my grandfather's biological parents. His parents died when he was small and he was given to a neighbor to adopt. He remembered that his real last name was SEES and according to his older 1st cousin, her Aunt Betty was his mother. Aunt's maiden name was Goff. My grandfather was born Dec.21,1886 in Louisa,KY. He was adopted by John and Betty Green (different Betty not his 1st cousin's Aunt). His 1st cousin's parents were William Quisenberry and Susan Goff. Another one of the Goff sisters was married to an Armentrout or Ermentrout.Any info that you may could give me would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Just stopped by to take a look at what you've done since I last stopped by. Thanks for all your hard work on behalf of the families you've researched. Now that I live on the east coast maybe I'll be able to come down to S.C. some day and visit Bennetsville and do some research of my own. Its been lots of fun!

Great Job. Your effort has really helped to place some missing pieces together for my father, Noah Albert Stubbs. He is a decendent in your line of Stubbs, a decendant of Roland Stubbs - Wesley Stubbs - John Stubbs - Noah stubbs (My Father). If you have any other information in this direction please forward. If you need any please ask.
Thanks Jay
