His parents were Merritt and Esther (Scribner) Johnston.
Barney married Sarah (Phelps) Johnston, resided in Rives Junction, Jackson Co. MI. Had 4 boys, Asa S., Otto G., Thoeodre and Yale Phelps.
The story that has been handed down for generations, is that Barney left to go to California for the goldrush and never returned to MI.
Anyone with any info that they can add would be very helpful.

Johnston success story found cousins by driving to Cedar, MO!
Suggestions for the Johnston Clearinghouse nice to have the site
Comments:
William and Jane Johnston are listed as parents of James in the Poage records.

James died 1841 in MO, maybe at the home of his son, Thomas Allen Johnston

Thomas b. Mar 11, 1805 and George William b.1823 in Hopkinsville, Christain County, Kentucky
Only two children????? in almost 20 years

Thomas married first Nancy Lowery and then when she died he married Nancy Burger Harris. I have a list of children that seem to be of the Harris union after 1850. He was first married in 1829. In 1869 he purchased land in Cedar County MO.

I would like to contact any cousins as I am the only child and only grand child of my grandfather who was a son of Thomas.

and any info about where James and William came from

Johnston brick wall (names and dates) Robert Johnston, b. ca. 1808, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, but where in County Tyrone was he born?
Johnston success story After 22 long and frustrating years I believe that we have connected recently with another branch of our family. Among their fa
Suggestions for the Johnston Clearinghouse Need to post this sites availability on a regular basis to the various Johnston bulletin boards, etc..
Comments:
Locating a Johnston family in Co. Tyrone can be a very slow process. The Heritage Center for Co. Tyrone is not as "up-to-date" as are some other counties in getting genealogical information into a computer data base. Of the 3 searches that I have had done in 3 different counties in Ireland, Co. Tyrone provided the least amount of information, appeared to have done the least amount of record searching and did it at the highest price. The best suggestion that I received was to have a manual search done for a marriage of one of Robert's brothers, James, as he married Martha McCoy in Co. Tyrone. McCoy is an uncommon name in Co. Tyrone and should be easier to trace according to the Family Heritage Center; however, I would still have to pay to have a manual search done. They did suggest 3 counties where both McCoys and Johnstons appear.

Additional family information follows:

Looking for connections with the following Johnston family originally from the Annandale Johnston/es of Scotland.

"Auld" Robert Johnston (b. 1767, d. 1 December, 1849) left Scotland sometime in the late 1700's - probably 1790's. He is said to have married an Irish woman (possibly 2), Hannah Shields being one. They started a family in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. All of the children were born in Ireland.

Children are thought to have been:

James, b. ca. 1798, d. 23 April, 1870
Margaret, b. ca. 1800
Alexander, b. ca. 1804, d. 1855
John, b. ca. 1806
Robert "Red Robin", b. ca. 1808, d. ca. 1895
Archibald "Archie", b. ca. 1815, d. 4 January, 1902
David, b. ca. 1816, d. 1896

Francis "Frank", b. ca. 1805, may have been a cousin/uncle.

Ca. 1832-3 some of the family emigrated to Canada. Oral family history has 4 brothers coming over with 2 settling in Prescott Co. and the other 2 going "up north". Others followed over the next year or two. Robert "Red Robin", Archibald "Archie", and Francis "Frank" settled in N. Plantagenet Twp., Prescott Co., Ontario, Canada, near the town of Pendleton and bought farms close to each other (Red Robin and Archie had adjoining farms and Frank was about 1 mile away). I have called them affectionately the "Wee Three" as they were the first 3 Johnstons that I knew about from Ireland being related - in addition Red Robin, my gggrandfather is said to have been 6'-5" tall. I would guess that Archie and Frank were above average in height too. Frank bought his farm from a George Johnson (Johnston?) in 1832. George had been on the tax rolls with that piece of property since 1822. I have no other information on George, and the name George does not show up in at least the first 3 generations of the children of the Wee Three, that I know of. So, there may be no relationship there.

Ca. 1905 a sailor from Ireland called on my ggrandfather, James Johnston, about an estate that had been left in Ireland. The estate consisted of an inn and related property. A relative, a publican, had died and had no living heirs in Ireland. The sailor had been hired by a lawyer to track down an heir in Prescott Co.. I do not know the outcome of this contact.

In the 1920's I believe that sisters Edna & Beuleh Johnston went to Ireland to see if they could find some Johnston relatives. All were dead. They did visit the cemetary where they were buried and made extensive notes in a journal. Over time the journal with its information was lost. We do not know where the sisters visited in Ireland.

Being an Annandale Johnston, Robert would have been a Presbyterian. He did not follow up on that in Canada. In Ireland I have no idea of his religious affiliation although I have heard one oral history that gave Presbyterian. In Canada most were Orange Lodge members and had various religious affiliations due to the fact that a Presbyterian church was not always close by - all remained with protestant affiliations, mostly Methodist, some Baptist. I do not know about Orange Lodge membership in Ireland.

We are particularly interested in finding out when "Auld" Robert arrived in the Brampton area and which of his family were with him. We don't seem to be able to find a trace of his wife who may have predeceased him either in the Brampton area or elsewhere. From the marriage records of some of "Auld" Robert's grandchildren which lists their birthplaces as "Chinguacousy", it would appear that James, Alexander and David were in the Brampton area for some time. Does anyone know if "Auld" Robert and any other family members lived in Prescott Co.? We know that his son James farmed in Ashfield Twp., Huron Co., as he shows up on the 1861 census there, but he is not there in 1851. Red Robin and Archie were in N. Plantagenet Twp., Prescott Co., in 1861. Red Robin married in Riceville (Prescott Co.) in 1833. Frank died in early 1851.

Lately in the 1881 census we have found someone who appears to be our David in Toronto Gore Twp., Peel Co., along with who apprear to be his twin sons nearby, James and John.

We believe that Margaret married and stayed in Co. Tyrone, Ireland. We have no information on John.

If you think that you may have a connection with any of the above and/or information on their origins in Ireland and/or Scotland and/or later life in Prescott, Peel and Huron Counties, please contact me either direct or via this bulletin board.

Comments:
This is a great site. My great-grtandfather was James Henry Johnston of Terrell County, Georgia. My grandfather, William Robert Johnston was one of eight children. He left Georgia for Mississippi, and eventually, Lousiana. Our family lost touch with William Robert's brothers and sisters. Their descendants live in Georgia and Florida , near Oxford, Florida, I believe, and some are named Lee. Others may live near Hawthorne, Florida. I would love to make contact with some of these folks. I'm sure they do not know of the Louisiana cousins.

Have been looking for info on Harold Johnston and his wife, Mary Ellen Catherwood Johnston. Supposedly they came over either from Ireland or a little isle off Scotland and settled in Brooklyn. I don't know for sure when they came to America, and I don't even know their birthdates. However, Their daughter, Beatrice, was born in Brooklyn in 1890. Harold drove a hanson cab for a living. Comments:
James Johns(t)on seems to arrive in Ohio from nowhere. He married a Sarah Pruttsgrove Carling on 26 June, 1831, in Cleveland, Cuyagoha Co., Ohio. Son Charles Wilson was born there (see above.) However, he told our grandfather that his name was Thomas, not James, and that he was a Scottish Shoemaker. This man's origins and those of his wife have eluded us for over 90 years of research. Does anyone recognize this pair? They supposedly came from New York or New Jersey (death cert.), but no one knows where. Sarah Pruttsgrove Carling gave her parents as foreign born, but James did not. Does anyone recognize her?

I have been searching for my ancestor Eliezer Johnston for almost 2 years. My Johnsons dropped the "t" when they moved to Knox Co., Ohio from PA around 1820. I was looking for Eliezer in Cumberland Co. PA but couldn't find anything. Then I got a tip to look in Washington Co. and I found him in the 1810 census. His wife was Margaret (don't know last name). He had four daughters in the 1810 census. The first of four sons was born in 1811. He was my gggg grandfather John Johnson. The other boys were Henry, Eleazor and Warden. I would love to hear from anyone who may recognize any of this info. Thanks.

Johnston success story No success on the Johnstons yet
Comments:
My brick wall came quick. I thought the unusual name (not a William or John) would make him easier to find.
What I know:
Born: 9-22-1925 in Michigan
Married: HOCK, Vivian Irene b. 9-9-1926 in Michigan
one son: James Ronald Johnston

Ford worked at the Detroit Tank arsenal as a welder's helper up to 1946. He was a semi pro boxer and killed a man in a bar fight and went to prison. When he got out, his wife had divorced him. At some point he moved to California and we believe he married a Val(?). No other known children.

He had one sister who lived in the Caro, Michigan area and also a brother named Calvin Johnston who lived in the Bay City, Michigan area.

Any replies would be appreciated.

Comments:
My JOHNSTON line is not very long at present. The ones that I've tracked so far lived in Monmouth and Ocean counties, NJ. From death cert. and census input I've found that my
GGrandfather, Albert Sidney JOHNSTON, Sr. was born c1841 probably in Brooklyn, NY. He died in Manasquan, Monmouth Co., NJ. His father's name on death cert. is Joseph S. JOHNSTON, mother's name Sierah. I expect to search the Brooklyn 1840 census soon for Joseph S.(Samuel?) JOHNSTON family. The 1850 Howell twp, Monmouth Co., NJ census has a Samuel JOHNSTON and Sarah family with children: Hiram 13, Albert 8, Lydia 5, and Eugene 3. Samuel & Sarah born in England. Children all born in NY. Albert's death cert. says he died Nov 1904, aged 63 years, 8months. That would make him born Mar 1841, very close to the census input, which often isn't very accurate. Albert m. Mary Elizabeth Clayton and they had 10 children. Intriguingly they named their first born Eugene and one of the girls Lydia - possibly names of Albert's siblings - and the next to last child, Joseph. If you are interested in this line, I'll be more than glad to correspond.

Very frustrating line to research. With so many similar names and with no knowledge of parents' names, has been a struggle over many years. Good luck to everyone. "My" William was born somewhere in Kentucky in August 1842, married Eliza Ann Jones, probably in Indiana, they moved and had children in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas, finally settling as a prairie doctor in Summerfield, Marshall County, Kansas, where he died in 1935. Any help would be vastly appreciated. Good luck with your searches!

W.P. (Walter Phillip) was born in GA about 1834. Served for the conferates under General Nathan Bedford. Married Martha "Maggie" Jane Dillard Nov.11,1878. She was born Nov. 1846 in Lebanon, Wilson Co., TN. I have no idea how they met. He worked for the railroad after the war first as an engineer on the Memphis line, then a dispatcher for the Ft. Worth/Denver line, then as an agent for the Witchita Falls, TX line. Maggie and him separated sometime around 1882 as they have a son Harry Eugene b. 08/19/1882 in Shevreport, LA that apparently he did not know about. He settled before 1890 in Greer Co, Mangum OK where he died in Nov. 1902.

His will left everything ($500) to Buckner Orphan Home in Dallas, TX.

I'm looking for any more information I can find ~ especially about his parents.

I am beginning to work on finding information about a Mary Johnson/Johnston whose mother's maiden name, according to a note left by my gggrandfather, was Rebeccah Patten. Mary supposedly was from Ireland. Mary married my gggggrandfather Moses Kirkpatrick probably in the Franklin cty area of PA. By 1783-84 they are on their way to Jefferson cty KY where Moses has 1000 acres on Harrod's
creek. I know that a William Johnston and a Benjamin Johnston have land grants in KY about this time but don't know of any connection. When Moses is killed by Indians, Mary remarries a Jonathon Thomas. They live in Elizabethtown, now Hardin cty. KY Any of this seem familiar?
