Nicholas Bata (Baty) is first listed in the Galla Rock Twp in the 1835 Pope County Personal Property Tax Assessment records. By 1865 the tax assessment records showed he had acquired a total of 2979 acres. He was married to Nancy McCallister daughter of John McCallister on 3-22-1832. I would love to find more information about where the McCallisters came from and if Nicholas came to Pope County with them.

Distant kin to a Whidesides and I am doing some genealogy work. I am chasing the family of Thomas F. Whitesides b. 06 March 1885 in Arkansas. The 1900 census shows that their home was in Galla Rock, Pope, Arkansas. The census furthur shows the father as Jackson Whitesides b. abt 1846 in No. Carolina and mother as Mary E. Whitesides. I have no clue yet for the maiden name of Mary E.. Birth dates on the children indicates that there could have been a second wife.
I see under the families on the web site that he Whitesides name is listed but no family information.

Felty was my maternal gggrandfather. He was murdered by Bushwhackers at Galla Rock in 1864. My grandfather Dave Cloninger was born there in 1874 and He told me the story many times. They have an article in the Atkins Chronicle archives that tells of the murder. Actually he didn't die after he was shot. So they tried to get him to Little Rock
in a boat, but He died somewhere along the route. No one knows where He is buried. There is a marker at Bells cemetery(I beleve that's the name) naming him as pioneer settler. Jim Hightower --www.texasballads.com--

Thank you very much for the wonderful website. I am moving back to Arkansas next spring and would like to become a member of your historical society. I am writing a paper on one side of my family tree, that of John Houston Ewton and his family. He was a Justice of the Peace for Galla Rock in the late 1930s. The Ewtons had a farm on the Centerville - Galla Rock Road. They are all buried on Petillo Hill outside Centerville. I am a certified secondary history teacher, hoping to get a position in the Yell/Pope County area. Please let me know how I can donate to the society and become a member. Thank you.

My Gr Gr Grandfather John F Hallmark his wife Mary Epperson and two children, Johnny and Ada Florence May are all listed 1880 in Galla Rock. I have seen a Thomas Blankenship as well next door to My Gr Gr Grandparents. Seems my family went back and forth Shelby Ala. to Pope county. My Grandfather was born in Illinois,Pope county as was my Mother.
This family may have some connection to the other fella speaking of the Ussery family as they all are from the same area of Shelby/Coosa Alabama.
Why did these Ala/Georgia folks come to Galla Rock??

The family is on the 1880 census of Galley Rock. I traveled to the area and found the graveyard in the early 90's and the weeds were so tall it was impossible to search for a marker. Ussery b.1829 & Susan McNeal(Neil) b.@1835-39, were on the 1870 census in Hardeman Co Tenn. Their twin sons, David Clinch & William b. 1874 in Millington, TN (North of Memphis). Ussery & Susan were on the 1860 census of Al, 9 miles from Iuka, MS.
Ussery was in the household of Caleb Pierson in 1850, in Iuka, Ms.
My Uncle Ralph Pierson (Paris AR) had visited the cemetery with his fa. David Clinch to his grandparents grave.
