I appreciate receiving updates on familes connected to the Faris' of West Virginia. I update the main Faris History site (Rootsweb) with the information from time to time. On a more personal note, it seems I may have found my grandmother Mabel Irene Gabler. I'm sending for documents to verify but this is a major breakthrough if it comes to pass. Feel free to contact me if your Faris' are related to William and Dorathea (Johnson) Faris of West Virginia!

Hey everyone.... in the midst of a small snow storm here in Vancouver BC I have now only 12 pages to go in Nellie Flack's book. Then I will add a couple of families that have emailed me (descendants) and then upload it all at once. Thank you for your patience... email me if you have any others to add! Expect the update before Christmas!

Just a note to let everyone know I am now up to 1960 people on the Faris History website (see the link in this site) from the book by Nellie L. Flack! Just six more sittings and I should have it completed. Then comes the time to update with notes I've collected along the way... it is now Sept 18, 2007. Estimated time of the book being completed online, I'd say by mid October, 2007. Thanks for your patience.

I am a Faris decendant. I have THE BOOK, but now need information to help me find the location in Ireland that our William and Dorratha emmigrated from. I am going to Ireland in April, and would really like to find the "places" this trip.
If there is anyone out there who has any information as to what happened to Nellie Flacks research materials, please contact me. Someone, somewhere must have these records.

Howdy Cousins: I'm from the William Faris-Mary Faris-Thomas Yates line. FYI Copies of the Nellie L. Flack book are available through a reprint company. I bought one several years ago so I could place my hand-me-down original in a safe place. Best wishes to all. Van Truan Pueblo, Colorado

I am descended from Nancy Faris, who married Charles Blayney, was the mother of 13 of his 16 children, and lived in West Alexander, PA until her death in 1880. If anyone has more information about her I would greatly appreciate an email. Also, is there a Faris or Flack around today who would've inherited Nellie Flack's research materials, photos or other mementos? Many thanks.

Donna: The Faris brothers of County Down, IR appear to have emigrated about the year 1762 based on the births of David Faris, b. 1761 County Down and Adam Faris, b. 6 Nov 1863 in Berkeley Co., VA.
The brothers were William, David, Arthur and Cornelius. All, have been accounted for except Cornelius who is said to have wandered south and is lost in history. The Sims Index to Land Grants in Berkeley Co., VA 1762-1863 shows William acquired 3 grants: 23 acres in Back Creek in 1790, another in Back Creek 40 acres in 1773 &108 Acres in 1804. Arthur acquired 202 acres in Back Creek in 1779 & 353 acres "Cor. S. Harris in 1775. John Gustin acquired two grants of 255 acres each 1 in 1796 "Warm Spirns" (perhaps Warm Springs) and on in 1791 "Wts. Potomac in 1791. Robert Gustin obtained 7 gramts betweem 1798 amd 1805 onr og 88 1/2 acres on Crooked Branch Ridge and the other 6 in Sleepy Creek.
The name Faris is still common in the Middle East. The Tradition suggests that Scottish Cursaders were so impressed with the Middle East shepards that on return to Scotland they brought some of them along. The shepards brought their musical instruments and introduced the Scots to the Bag Pipe. Another Faris family tradition advises that David Faris & family was forced to leave Scotland to escape the religious persecution of 1680-1683 and immigrated to Northern Ireland.
In "Ulster Immigration to Colonial America, 1718-1875" by R. J. Dixon, the author notes and that it was inevitable that spinners & weavers would feel the decline dueto increased rents export restrictions. Emigration reached a crecenedo in the 1760's and early 1770's as linnen exports declined.
According to Dixon Arthur Dobbs was a prominent organizer of Irish emigration. He owned large areas of land in IR, was the High Sheriff of Antrim, a member of the Irish Parliment & Surveyor General of Ireland. In 1750 a William Faris sought Dobbs influence to secure a post in Carolina. In 1752 Dobbs was appointed Gevernor of N. Carolina. I have often wondered if William Faris was related to our Faris Brothers.
I descend from David Faris [c1735-1811]who m. Charity Silver. Their children are:
Nancy Faris [1768-1849] m. William Harper
David Faris, Jr.m. Elizabeth Hendrick 8 Jun 1786
Charity Faris, m. John White21 May 1786
Aaron FAris, b. 1774 m. Jane Parke 23 Dec 1794. I believe all were m. in the Back Creek Presbyterian Church in Berkeley Co., by The Rev. Hugh VAnce.
I suspect you will find some interesting reading in the Faris Family GenForum messages 47 & 89 etc.
Nancy Faris b. 1799 d/o William Jr. and Susannah Curtis Elm Grove, Ohio Co., VA m. Charles Blayney 17 Aug 1820. Their dau. Elizabeth Blayney m. William Reed, 21 Oct 1858, Ohio Co., VA. Another dau. Dorothy Faris, m. James Gaston 27 May 1819. One of their children John H. Gaston, m. Jane Reed. I hoped to find a link to my G4 grandparents William Reed [1777-1829] and Mary Harper[1787-1854] but no such luck to date.
I welcome your questions.

I am looking for my birth father...His name was William Carl Faris he was from according to some documents my mother retained. I never met him...I tried looking up info online...it is curious that I found your site...I don't know if we would be related...I was under the presumption that the name Faris was Arabic ( which means Knight) how it got to Ireland is a curious interest to me. Do you know of any relatives in alabama with the name William Carl Faris...I know he had 2 brothers(twins Ronald and Donald)?
Well...it doesn't hurt to ask. :)

Hello, what a wonderful site. Thank you, you have been very helpful in my Farris research.
I descend from David Farris Jr. and Elizabeth Hendricks through their daughter Elizabeth born in 1792. Elizabeth married John Wilkerson in Clinton County, Ohio in 1811 where the Farris' and Wilkersons lived around that time.
I have an extensive website about the Wilkerson family at www.deyoungmatson.com. with more information about the David Farris Jr. family all the time.
Thanks again.
