My Benedict connection branches once William (b abt 1813, d Dec 4, 1891) Benedict's daughter, Cora, married Peter Chadderdon. The William Benedicts and Chadderdons had moved to Minnesota in the middle 1800's from New York.

The latest information from your research was very helpful, as up to now the information I have gleaned is from Henry Marvin Benedict's books.

You have a very interesting website and have put in a lot of hard work. I appreciate everything you have done and hope you keep adding to the information as it becomes available. Thanks. Great job. Richard Lorenz

trying to link up Rachel ROSS, whether or not she was really a HOLCOMBE.
Stumbled across your web site, and verified a little bit of this family Leavit DUNBAR MILLS - Melissa/Elizabeth St. JOHN family.
Thank you so much for posting it.

I came across the MILLS - POTTER - DUNBAR - St JOHN outline a long time ago, whiile beginning my MILLS research.

As that one had Harriett Melissa MILLS, and a Clarissa Elizabeth, thought that maybe my family MILLS of Dayton, Montgomery CO OH USA, was related.

Later found, ca 1990=1992, that we were not.

Have also done DNA testing on my brother, a male MILLS< and have found 5 other branches to date, that match up.

Your website is of great interest. I just wonder if you ever heard of a "Benedict Castle". The story in my family is that my grandfather "Burton John Benedict" inherited a castle in England- and because he could not begin to take care of it he sold it.

I have no idea specifically when this was, or why it fell to him and not his older brother. If you are interested in investigating this myth- I can give particulars of where my grandfather lived at different dates. If you learned what he inherited from England- I can't say for sure it was a castle, but it is supposed to have been in the family for generations- it certainly would give credence to one theory or the other.

Anyway, I wish you well in your research.

Your website has certainly cleared up the confusion of the William Benedicts. I have so much information and none of it seemed to connect. Thomas(1617),James (1649),James(1685),Benjamin(1712),Benjamin(1740),Eliakim (1778),Marcus (1805)Orson (1840),Harry (1868),Edith(1904), Anne(1934)
I would add that my grand father had no sons only daughters, his brother had no children. Thus our contribution to the linage of the Benedict name from James stopped with him. Hopefully the line from Marcus' other sons will continue. Thanks for the valuable information.

I know there are some buried at Southwark Cathedral( plaque up on the wall) on the other side of the river b/w London Bridge and the Golden Hinde, behind Montague St. Thanks

I was really happy to find your website, as I have been trying to trace New England ancestors. Dorcas Benedict, daughter of Jacob Benedict, married Robert Bunten, where my surname came in. Recently I visited the lovely church at Stratton St. Michael in Norfolk and saw the font where Thomas Benedict was christened. If you haven't looked this church up, there is a good presentation of it on www.norfolkchurches.co.uk. With best regards, Kathleen Bunten

I stumbled upon this site as I was looking for a ship's manifest for the Confidence to cross-reference information.

To bring some history alive for my children (ages 11 and 14), I began my quest for those who have come before! However, I never knew that my family's history was so fertile!

Thank you for the treasure-trove of information. It is my intention to write a personal history for my kids of the many interesting branches of my family for which I would like your permission to cite information from this site for Benedict line.

With best regards,

Always nice to find something useful after slogging through all the cut & paste info out there. Rev. John Youngs who married Thomas Benedict/Mary in Salem is also a direct ancestor.... In 1875, Florence Emma Brittan, who was both a 6g granddaughter [through Jemima Benedict/Peter Smith] and a 5g granddaughter [through Mary Benedict/John Olmstead] of Thomas, married Joseph Charles Young, a 5g grandson of Rev. John... but given that span of time, there are certainly other connections as well!

Dear Cousin,
Long, Long time no hear from. Good thing I keep special emails. I am a writer and I keep very busy. However, I was appalled that I had not responded to this email. All I can say is I am sorry for the tardy reply.

Since you don't recognise Marion Annette Benedict, it is clear we are distant. Marion Annette's father was Hermon Betts Benedict; his father was Isaac Deacon Benedict; his father was Abraham Benedict; his father was John Benedict; and his father was Thomas Benedict 1682 Connecticut. I think it was Isaac who had 11 kids one being Marion Annette's father so right there the Benedicts got out of control!

I wish I did know some living Benedicts but I don't.

Thanks for you time. Any info about the family would be great.

Aloha, Stormy

PS I waited so long you changed you email and I had to paste it here ;-(

Subject: Hello, Cousin!

Hi, Stormy~

Thanks for spending some time (wow - almost an
hour!) at Benedict Topics and for signing the Guestbook (performing that little
courtesy seems to spook most visitors). When I
checked my hit monitor last night, I was surprised to find only four hits - one
from Hawaii and three different people from Canada; that's unusual. And so
is the name Stormy, which I assume was not your gt-gt-grma's nickname. Your msg
was quite un-stormy, so there must be a story there.

Now, I have no references to Marian Annette,
so would you please tell me either her father's name or her husband's
(whichever traces back to Thomas). You seem aware of the degree of relationship,
so I'd probably need the rest of the male line to Thomas, if that's not too much
trouble. If you want to tell me a bit about yourself too, I always like to make
the acquaintance of my "cousins". If you know any living male Benedict's,
perhaps you'd steer them toward the Benedict Surname DNA Project (accessible
from BT, also). We need more data.

Please come back again to visit BT;
it's constantly changing.

Best regards,

Bob Benedict

The clarification of Thomas Benedict's paternal ancestors was MOST interesting. Well done! My genealogical impetus is to track down updated and corrected information, since my mother and great-grandmother did most of the initial research. So I am always happy to find information that sheds light on previous assumptions. DNA projects intrigue me, too--although my Benedict lines are well documented, that isn't the case with others, and Y-DNA studies might be the only way to verify theories. I will follow the Benedict project with great interest.

Looks like I did visit this site before; how could I forget such good stuff? I am a Benedict by my first marriage, interested in history in general and in the Benedicts because my children are descendants. Is anyone related to the Jeremiah Benedict (b. 1795 in Delaware Co, NY) who came to Covington,Ky / Cincinnati,OH area in early 1800's?

Just checking the website out for info. My great-great grandfather's name was Benjamin Benedict Freeman and he was born in Plymouth, Chenango Co., NY on 2 Sept. 1816. His mother's name was Ruth and she was born in 1788 in CT. She died 27 July 1867 in Lima, Rock Co., WI at age 79 yrs., 2 mos., & 10 days. Ruth married John Freeman on 7 Dec 1806 ( location unknown, but probably Chenango Co., NY ). I don't know Ruth's maiden name but suspect it was Benedict or Ruth's mother may have been a Benedict. There was a father & son both named Benjamin Benedict who moved from Danbury, CT to Coventry, Chenango Co., NY in the early 1800s. I suspect Ruth is related to this family or maybe to the other Benedicts that moved from CT to Chenango Co., NY during that time era.

Lots of great information in here. My sister has long been interested in our ancestry, and I find myself now curious as well. Our Benedict family home was on Rockwell lane in Ridgefield Ct. It was a farmhouse built in 1773. It was sold out of the family line in the 1960's.
My grandmothers name was Alyce. After the farmhouse was sold she moved to
Wilton to live with her daughter Alice Barrett. There were always long
fields of corn at the farm there when I was a child. The historic home that is listed
on another site belonged to an uncle I was told. I would love to hear from you but if you don't have time I understand. I am 68 and have 18 grandchildren.

Excellent website, with important new information. To improve it, I suggest source citations for the significant name and BMD date/place items. Also, some attention is needed to some of the double-dating conventions used. I see dates between Jan and Mar that do not include the double-dated year, and I noticed a Dec date that _did_ have double-dating.
Thanks again for a great job.

Actually came to this site while searching for a Benedict coat of arms replica. I had met the writer of the Benedict Genealogy Vol. 2 (I believe it was Elwyn Benedict) when I was a young man. My father, Rowland Orlando Benedict was quite interested in the family genealogy. We have since lost the second volume of the genealogy but still have the first volume. I am a retired minister with three grown children. Sorry, at this time this time there is no male issue. We still have hope, however. We do have 5 granddaughters. I believe we are listed in the second volume and my fathe ris listed in the first volume. Have always found the Benedict history interesting.

Thanks, so much, for the very comprehensive site.
After looking at other sites, I finally found one I can trust to be correct.
I feel so fortunate to have maps, copies of wills, etc.
I appreciate your hard work to prove,or disprove, facts about our family.
My line descends through the Olmsteads. Mary Benedict mar. John Olmstead, their dau. Jane mar. Benjamin Wilson.
The Wilson line has been been difficult to prove. Do you have any information on that family?
Thanks, again, I will be back.

I wrote you a couple of years ago. I was doing the research in the parish register (microfilm)on Thomas Benedict and his ancestors in Norfolk. My article called "The English Origins of the First Thomas Benedict of Long Island and Norwalk, Conn was finally published in the Connecticut Nutmegger in December 2006. About the only thing that was not solved was where the marriage of Thomas Benedict and Mary Bridgum was. Do you want me to send you a copy? The only thing that I ask is if you use any thing from the article that you give me credit and use my documentation.

This is my second signing (originally signed the Guestbook April 9th, 2005).

I am interested in tracking down descendants of Aaron Benedict (Venango Co. PA) whom may have migrated from PA to Iowa and Missouri (and points west). My Great Great Great Grandfather (Alvin) settled in Atchison Co. Missouri, but know there were others who moved at or near the same time. I have Photos of Alvin and a few unidentified. Alvin's son, Albert B. Benedict was my Great Great Grandfather, he and a cousin returned to PA to enlist during the Civil War. Alberts son Thomas Levi was my Great Grandfather. Thomas had 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I would be particularly interested in any exchange of information from Alvin on down. Sharing family photo's, news articles, Obituaries and just family stories, is of great interest. Thanks!

I found a box at the Minnesota Historical Society with information about Nathan Rogers and his wife Lydia Grisell. Lydia was the daughter of Cynthia Benedict. Lydia, fortunately for us, was interested in collecting family history in about 1900. The box contains letters from Cynthia Benedict and other family members. There is an opera program from The Count of Monte Cristo in which Aiden Benedict appeared. Includes an attractive photograph of him. I think he might be Cynthia's brother, but I need to do more research on this (Cynthia's father was Aden (sp?) Benedict. I will be transcribing the information I found and will be glad to email it to any other Benedicts who might be descended from this family.

Hi. I would love a reply. My family has a strong bipolar gene. I found a history of the Rogers family that indicated Cynthia Benedict (daughter of Aden Benedict) had a "nervous breakdown" at 40 from which she never recovered. I am almost positive that the current family members inherited this gene through Cynthia Benedict. I was wondering if other Benedicts had any writeen history of this trait. Cynthia's son, Arthur Curtis Rogers, became an early neurologist and I wondered if he developed this interest because of his mother's illness. I know that mental illness has a stigma for many people and they may be reluctant to discuss this topic, but medical genealogy is of great interest to me. I could ask my brother and nephews to contribute DNA if you would like. Alice Rogers alicerogers2006@comcast.net

Actually, I didn't see anything that helped make a connection between my George Benedict and persons mentioned, but that could be because I know so little about George (my wife's grandfather). He was born 1884 in New York, and died 1950 in St. Paul, MN. Reportedly his great grandfather was a member of the House of Lords in England. He was disowned by his family for marrying beneath his station, to a commoner from Norway, Sigrid Jess.

I live in Oneida County NY. Love Brewster Benedict Stevens abd her sister Elizabeth Benedict Elmer (wife of Hezekiah Elmer) settled, with their families in the town of Western, Oneida county after the Rev War. Love and Israel Stevens are burried in the Delta cemetery which had to be moved when the town of Delta (near Rome, NY where Ft Stanwix is located) was flooded to create Lake Delta in the early 1900's to store water to feed the Erie Canal. I am interested in connecting with other Benedicts of my line to learn if anyone else has found the name of Bushnell Benedicts first
or second wife. I have found the children of Bushnell Sr and Elizabeth in the Danbury records and a bpt records for another child in Torrington, Litchfield Co, Ct.

No reply necessary. The website is very helpful, especially sorting out the very early days where there is, unavoidably, some confusion. We're talking about some centuries ago. Someone has done yeoman work in that area.

I'd love to be part of the DNA project, but, of course, can't. It was my mother who was the Benedict, not my father.

Was invited here by Bob Benedict from a research query on John C Benedict, Rebecca (Standlee) Benedict, wife, and sons Russell White Benedict, George and Henry..(other children), who, according to family information were from New York. Benedicts were "hatters" and Russell W. was named in honor of Russell White, who taught the Benedicts the hatter trade. Benedicts merged with Standlees when John C. married Rebecca in Shawnee Town. Any information on ancestors of this merge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Very interesting site! My family has traced our roots back to John Benedict (1819-1893, born in New York). His father is believed to be Benjamin Benedict, born 1782 in NY. Research indicates that Benjamin's father may be Asher Benedict, born 1762, but it's not certain. I'm looking for information on Asher or Benjamin and possible links to Thomas Benedict or other English ancestors. Thanks!

I recently tested through Family Tree DNA and am Haplogroup K2 SNP M70+, so I am searching for others close to this type and noticed your member Bill.
My oldest known male surname ancestor was William Denning, who was said to be from Connecticut. He was born about 1800 and was a man of color. I am "white" and only about 4 years ago, at age 52, found out about diversity in my ethnic lineage. William married Cornelia Tuttle who apparently had been a slave somewhere in the Hudson Valley region.

I also am intrigued by Thomas Jefferson's Haplogroup K2 M70 type, especially with his history of fathering children of Sally Hemmings and my seemingly similar mixed race ancestry.

This may all have no bearing whatsoever with the Benedict family, but I appreciate any feedback you might offer.

I will keep the DNA project in mind. Thanks again for your good works.

I have been very succesful in finding the descendants of Benjamin Benedict, b. 1781 in Warwick, ORANGE, New York.

I have used Census records, cemetery records, and family records. These have been connected to the information you have so generously shared on this site and I can now connect from myself to George Benedict, b.about 1520.

Thank you so very much. I am now putting together folders for my cousins and siblings and all of our children. The library here has asked me to do a folder for their genealogy department. I do hope this will be OK with you. I am giving credit to the Benedict Topics, Robert A. Benedict, as well as to all of the acknowledgements that you have done with your work.

I will be glad to share all that I have found with your site as well as any other place that would welcome the information. I do need more direction as to how this can be done.

Sincerely

FYI, we have looked at a couple of parish registers mentioned and have the following tidbits of interest to you:

1) Saxlingham Nethergate, Judith Benedict bapt Jan 20, 1581, no father mentioned. Only Benedict we found in the register.

2) Tasburgh - marriage of George Benedict & Thomasin Goche, which you have plus burial date for George Benedict Sr, Jan 26 1575/76

3) Bedingham - marriages of Joan Benedict & Robert Lynde, Sep 18, 1569, Anne Benedict & James Spence(r), Apr 16,1563 plus the baptisms of 4 of the children of Anne Benedict Spence: Anne Spence, Jun 19, 1569; Daniel Spence, Sep 29, 1566; Thomas Spence, 21 Jan 1563/64 and Alice Spence, May 26, 1572, I modernized the spellings a little.

Hope this data of interest to you,

Thanks,

VERY useful. I am working on my son-in-law's genealogy. His grandmother was Janet Fannie Benedict, direct descendant of Nathaniel Benedict, Rev. War. and his son, Simeon Benedict.

Thanks so much for the clarification of Thomas' forebears.

I have a question. Were both George Sr. and George Jrs. wills dated 1583 as stated on this website, or is that a mistake? Also, have you transcribed the wills and documents; and, if so, could I purchase copies of them.

I've gotten pretty good at reading colonial documents, but I must admit, the Elizabethan think has me stymied!

Thank you again for a wonderful gift to Benedict genealogists.

I'm very impressed with the research on the origins of Thomas Benedict and Mary Bridgham - really points out the value of going to original sources in order to find accurate data and/or eliminate 'bad data'(aka family mythology).

As for the DNA project, I'd love for a descendant of Jacob Benedict to donate some tissue so that we'd know once and for all if these Benedicts belong to Thomas and Mary's family. The only descendants I know are through female lines (my husband, e.g.) or are female!

In 1847 Amos Benedict left Morrow Co, OH and migrated to Winnebago Co, WI with other family members and friends.

It is wonderful to see a website dedicated to our Benedict namesake!

My mother, Judy Benedict Fuhs and myself have organized a local Benedict Family Reunion for the past 8 years! We would love to see it expand to anyone interested in meeting our branch of the Benedict lineage!
