Comments:
I am interested in corresponding with anyone with the Strange surname. My grandfather was Calvin Strange. His father was William Strange and his mother was Christina (Uhrig) (Hamm) Strange. William and Christina's sons were Calvin and Benjamin. Christina had been married before she married William Strange, to a _____ Hamm. they had a son, Gayland Hamm. Are there any descendents of Benjamin, William Strange or Gayland Hamm out there?
I'd love to hear from you.

Comments:
Hi, my name is Kelsey Speake. "Charles Carleton Speake" is my great-great grandfather, and I have been trying for a long time to clear up my family line. My great-grandfather is "Sam H Speake"- born 1880. I'm confused at all the variations of Charles' name, and wonder if there were two of them, or if "Charles Speake" is the same man as "Charles Carleton Speake." I have a document (can't recall what it is at this time) that has the name Chas and Lizzy on it. If you have any other information on anyone I would love to hear it!

In May of 2007, I had the opportunity to play on the organ at St. Barnabas Church one eve. as we were touring the church. I understand that a picture was put in your local paper. Could I get a copy of that paper? We plan to visit your community in May once again and hope to learn more of your history.
Thank you. Elaine Smiley

Comments:
There are a number of un-readable civil war graves in the Montrose cemetery. Could it be possible to list all the burials of soldiers in the cemetery? I am interested in one in particular that is on the top of a vault. It looks like it says E.C. Weave 35th Iowa from my picture I took, but that name isn't on any listing that I can find. Can you help me?

Subject: Parker, Henry
Comments:
Henry Parker lived in Montrose from abt 1850 until his death sometime after 1880. I tried looking at deaths but 1882 was not available. Henry was b abt 1797 in England. He was not a member of the English colony. He and daughter Sophia are on the 1850 census. Sophia married 14, Dec 1855 Samuel Gobble in Montrose. The marriage index and record has it as Dobbie, Samuel. Can it be corrected? Sophia died about 1864 possibly in child birth. She was buried on the family farm I believe. Henry died after 1880 and cannot be found. I suspect he was buried with the Parks family but under the damn when it was built. Until myself no one in our family knew anything about Henry or Sophie.

Thank you
Marilyn

Subject: Steamboat explosion
Comments:
I was visiting the Lee Co., Iowa GenWeb site and I came across a small mention of a steamboat explosion near Montrose where 25 victims were buried in a mass grave near or under 'Blondea Street'. I ask because my G-G Grandfather Milo Pruden was a pilot on a steamboat and lived in Montrose, Iowa from 1870 to ? His last child was born in 1877, and his wife remarried Jan. 1878, with the name Mrs. Charlotte Pruden. I can find no grave for him. He just vanished. I wonder if you could shed some light on this steamboat explosion for me. I live in Davenport, and may just go down to Lee Co., to check old newspapers. Thanks for any help you can give. --Paul Pruden

Comments:
A relative of my wife, Valentine Speake, lived in Montrose from about 1845 until his death in 1876. He was a riverboat pilot, and was listed as a Lumber Dealer in the 1865 Iowa Gazetteer. I have found a fair amount of information on his son, Capt. Samuel who was also a riverboat pilot, but have found very little on Valentine. Any info would be greatly appreciated

Subject: Henry Parker
Comments:
I'm looking for information on Henry Parker b abt 1797 in England. Henry and his daughter are first found on the 1850 census in Montrose, Iowa. Sophia is b abt 1830 in England. Henry lives next to Frederick Parks and family. Sophia marries Samuel Goble (miss spelled on records as Dobble) Dec 14, 1855. 1860 finds Henry living with Sophia and family in the same place as 1850 and still next door to the Parks. Sophia dies after the birth of her third child before 1870. 1870 census finds Henry living with the neighbors the Parks. Samuel has remarried and moved to Burlington. 1880 finds Henry again with the Parks though Frederick has died. A descendant of the Parks is also as unaware, as I am of the relationship between the two families. Were they just good neighbors or related?
Any information appreciated.
tia
Marilyn

Subject: American Fork & Hoe
Comments:
Hi Ron,
Here is a little history on the Standard Garden Tool Co - American Fork and Hoe Co.that I think will help you date your plow.

Standard Garden Tool Co.operated from 1907-1917. In 1917 American Fork & Hoe Co. of Cleveland bought Standard Garden Tool Co.
After American bought Standard, the identification changed a bit on the cultivators, which helps in dating them. After 1917, one handle continued to carry the name "Standard", the model number and "Montrose True Temper". The term "True Temper" previously was identified with America Fork and Hoe products. The other handle was marked "American Fork and Hoe Co. ".

Hope this helps!

The new format for your website is very nice and easy to navigate. I have so many memories of Montrose; however the picture of the stone (which is directly across the street from my grandparents house, Harry & Susan Wardlow) brought a smile to my face. I can't tell you how many times my brother and I tried to climb on top of it!
