I hope to find the (Civil Parish & townland) Irish origin of my McGuire family. John McGuire was born in Ireland about 1806. He married Margaret Fleming who was born about 1810. I do not know exactly where they were born or were married. According to naturalization records, their four sons (Patrick,b. 1841; James,b. 1847; John,b. 1844; Michael, b. 1851) were born in Cavan and emigrated to the US, settling in Concord, New Hampshire. I have exhausted conventional sources and hope for a breakthrough.

Hello.. I just researching my husbands roots. I think either Maguire or McGuire are correct. The name in Irish Gaelic was 'Mac Uidhir' or 'Mag Uidhir', so neither English translation is perfect. For that matter, other versions such as McGwire and Meguire are acceptable attempts at phonetically spelling the name.
McAuley is even more difficult to agree on than McGuire. My own brother and I disagree on the preferred spelling of MacAuley, and McCauleys have been arguing over this for generations. I have a copy of my grandfather's wedding certificate, in which father and son signed the name different ways on the same certificate! Perhaps we should use the Gaelic form "Mac Amhlaiobh".

You will note that I spelled my last name as shown above; however, my grandfather Harvey Lee (went by Lee) McGuire informed me when I was a child that our last name was spelled Maguire, having been changed, he said, by his sister(s) who preferred the latter in her correspondence in the late 1800's. This is likely correct as I was able to research a cemetery (Steele Creek Presbyterian Church) where three of his siblings were buried, having died in infancy. Their tombstones bear the last name Maguire. They grew up in NC (USA) near the SC-NC state line off of what is now NC 49 southwest of Charlotte NC. Would like to hear from others as indicated above.

I have finally developed a website, mostly dedicated to MacAuleys, especially MacAuleys of Fermanagh who are "Maguires in disguise" according to John Cunningham. Wonderful website. Thanks for providing it, Jim Maguire. I'd like to know more about my great grandfather, Thomas Mulray b.1830 and his parents, father was John, and on and on. I think he was from Roscommon and came to to USA in about 1855. I have his naturalization papers. He went to Manchester, England in 1860 and married Ann Cox. My grandmother Mary (Molly) Ann was born there in 1862. The family then came back to Nashville, TN. Thomas was a fur trader and owned a tannery there. He died 1n 1876.
