Steven I did not forget your birthday yesterday but I have not been on the internet because I had to put my Son from the Nursing Home into the hospital and now moved him back to the Nursing Home so I have been busy. Happy Birthday to you as you watch us from above. You are in our thoughts even still.

Last Thursday I was driving down the road and begin thinking of Buck. I burst into tears thinking of a conversation that took place about my brother. At a lunch with my Pastor and several other men from the Church we were talking about Steven and they were talking about the way I have handled this situation. I told them that I knew Steven was in Heaven and we were discussing Salvation and I thought about all the many reasons that I knew Steven was in Heaven. Steven had talked with me numerous times about being a Christian, but I cried because that is not how I knew.
Romans 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord" and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
2 Corinthians 5:15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
Steven was one of the most unselfish people that I have ever known and he didn't just confess with his mouth and believe with his heart. He lived a life that was no longer for himself, he cared about others more than himself. He lived his life to help others and was an example of a TRUE CHRISTIAN.
I spoke with my Dad earlier today and he told me he had visited this site earlier and talked to me about the emotions he felt when visiting the site, which brought me here tonight. I have a great joy in my heart for the life that Steven lived. It is awesome to have had the time that we spent together and when talking with my Dad about Steven it is awesome to know how proud he is that Steven is his Son. My parents could not have had a better son in Steven and I am just so proud to know that he is my "Big Brother" and that he lived a life serving others.
It has been 4 years and a little over 4 months since I saw Buck and I can tell you that I miss him as much today as I ever have. I have learned to focus on all the good times and the good things that we shared. I have learned how to refuse the path of hatred and what forgiveness really is. I have had to look to "Jesus Christ" to soften my hard and pray for all lost to find thier "Lord and Savior". I have learned that praying for someone to find "Jesus" is being obedient. I have looked to "Jesus Christ" to help me with the pain and suffering that I have felt and that I have watched my family feel.
I will repeat this again, Buck wrote to my in a card at my graduation "It is how you face the things in life that scare you that makes you what you are. Face life like a Warrior and keep GOD with you always".
I have a son named "Steven Christopher" named after my two older brothers and a wonderful daughter "Annika Kathryn". I have had the honor of carrying out my Dad and Brother's name through my son and it gives me great joy each time I call out his name.
Buck I love you brother and our bond will never be broken.
Mom, Dad, Chris I Love You!

I don't know why I have chosen this time to write, but for whatever reason, Steve has really been on my mind lately. Mr. and Mrs. Spears, Darryl, Chris, and Monica- please know that you I think of you all often and will never forget what a wonderful, hilarious, gorgeous, joking, person that Steve was. Remember- in high school, he was "Steve" to us! Being so far away and not able to attend the funeral has always made the tragedy seem a bit unreal. It still seems like I will run into him when I visit my parents in Montevallo. Continue to stay strong and always know that he is not forgotten.
Much love!

Diane Pate, the mother of Troy Connell, was sentenced on Oct. 11 2008. Her sentence was one year in prison and two years on probation for her involvement in Hindering Prosecution in this case. If she were to break her probation she would then serve a five year term in prison. Is this what I wanted for her? Of course not, I never wanted her to be in this position in the first place or her son, those are choices that were made by them. The choices that were made by her son took the life of my brother, the choices she made shamed herself, her family, and caused her to end up serving jail time. Am I the judge and jury? NO!
My Point:
I know as a Christian it is hard to deal with the pain that lies within a person's heart when something so tragic has happened to someone they love. That is the loss of my brother to me and for that my heart is hardened by the actions that were taken; however, as a Christian we must pray for people. Jesus said while dying on the cross "Forgive them father for they know not what they do". I pray that all people will find Jesus and be saved, because if they are saved and become Christians they will know what they do. Let's pray for not only victims, but for the people who committed these awful acts for they need Jesus in thier life. I am only posting this so that anyone who reads this may say this simple prayer.
Father, I come to you Lord and ask that you be with this family that has lost so much with the passing of Steven Carlyle Spears, Jr. I ask that you comfort this family and keep thier faith in you stronge LORD. I also pray for the individuals who have committed this crime Father, that they may find JESUS. I ask that you be with thier family as well Father, as I know they need your presence. In JESUS name I pray, AMEN.
We should all be looking to seek one thing! JESUS CHRIST
I Love You Buck!

Tonight I would like to share the story of my brother being a coach when I was playing little league baseball. My brother "Buck" coached our little league baseball team with Glenn Davis "AKA Glenn Fly" when we were the Indians. It was a time that I can remember like it was yesterday. They raised the money to get the sharpest uniforms (which I am sure a lot came out of thier pocket) that were on the market at the time, with the fitted hat to match. They took a group of young men in thier early teen years and were determined to make perfection. We practiced harder than any ball team I have been on. We had a group of guys with average talent, but a group of coaches with higher than average expectations. They would not settle for less than our best each moment at practice. If it was wrong drop your glove and run to the fence. Stay until you have no errors for a full round of infield, take your lead using slide steps. It was a very disciplined approach, but we loved it because thier was something special about these people. They believed in us and were dedicated to each person, but taught us that it was about the team and not letting the person down next to you. That was how to become a winner.
I could go on about this story for hours, but the reason I am writing it tonight is because I understand now the commitment that Glenn and Buck made to coach that team, the effort they put in was unbelievable, and I can guarantee everyone that played on that team had one of the best experiences of thier life. It was one of the most proud moments I can remember, because playing for my brother during that summer was not only one of my best years as a player, but I have never wanted to win so much for a coach (we were pretty good). I will always remember him constantly teaching me the fundamentals of the game, but more importantly the fundamentals of life. I can just remember them not giving up on any player and the person with least amount of talent had moments in that season that were keys to winning games. The confidence to strive in pressure situations, the understanding of what one person's success meant to a team, and the persistence to get up when you fall.
I want to thank you Glenn and Buck for those moments, because of your commitments I have something that no one can ever take from me. Life lessons that I can only hope to pass on to some youngster along the way.
Hereos live forever and I know one that will always live within me.
Love You Buck!

Today is the second anniversary of Steven's death at the hands of the monsters. I have just now learned of the verdict. God forgive me if it is a sin to be glad to hear this news that good has triumphed over evil. My thanks to the judge for overturning the jury's verdict.
1 ¶ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
There is still justice in America at times afterall.
My love to the Spears family. You remain in my thoughts, heart and prayers.

Jimmy Lamar Killingsworth was sentenced to death by lethal injection today 12/7/06.
This has been a long road for our family to this point and nothing can ever give us back Steven, but Judge Tommy Jones did give us justice today based on our legal system he overturned the recommendation of the jury of life with no parol. I am greatful to Judge Tommy Jones for this decision.
I am also greatful to Don McMillan, Cory Maize, Don Valeska, Johnny Tubbs, Jody Wade, and Attorney General Troy King. Attorney General Troy King told my family in the beginning that the best would be prosecuting this case for Steven, Monica, and my family and from the first time I talked with these gentlemen there was no doubt they were. I say a special thanks to these people because of the compassion that they have shown for my family and the job that they have done in this case. It is great to know that those special people are fighting for victims and thier families.
The people of Bibb County and everyone involved in supporting our family I say THANK YOU.
We will always miss you BUCK, and you will never be forgotton. It is true that you live in each of us because I think of something you said to me or a good memory of you every day. I love you brother!

I still have vivid memories of Steve and I playing football out in the front yard at "grandma" Spear's house, oh so long ago. Plummer's biscuits and a day filled with sports with Steve & Chris were always a highlight of our vacation down from Michigan.

Today, March 20, 2006, is the first time that I knew that Steven was gone. I saw the news tonight, heard the name, and started searching on the internet hoping that it was not the Steven I knew.
Steven hired me in 2002 to build stained glass windows as a present for his wife, Monica, for their new house. I was very busy at the time, and it took several weeks for me to complete this project. Steven was so understanding about the delay. I remember so pleasantly my dealings with him, and how he called me, "Miss Nicki." My husband, Grady, and I delivered the windows to his house. He showed us all through the home he had built. He was so proud of his new home, and we were so impressed with him.
I can't begin to tell you how sad I am that this happened to such a fine young man. I never met Monica, but I want her, Steven's mom Donnie, and all the family to know that my prayers, belated as they are, are with them all.

I thought it would be fitting to share the words that Buck had written me in a card given to me at my College Graduation.
Brother, Congratulations, I just wanted you to know everybody gets scared, but it's how you face the things that scare you that makes you what you are. Face everything in life like a warrior and keep God with you always.
Not a person in the world could understand the tragedy that took place December 10th, but I get through each day thinking of the great man Steve strived each day to be, a person who did not settle for mediocrity, it is that example that we all have to hold on to. It is the words, such as those shared at my graduation that I think of. It's the times when he told me the hard truths that only a person who loves you has the guts to say that I hold on to. I can't thank him enough for the heart to heart talks that we shared. I will always love my brother for everything he stood for and the times he spent teaching me how to be a man. Brothers till the END!
To all my family, I feel like one of the luckiest people in the world to have all of you. Where would we be without each other?
Hold on to good times as if they were trying to escape, because you never know what day is marked for the end of your days on earth.
Live each day thinking of ways to serve others and feel the joy that brings to your life. We all have learned from a great example that serving others is the only true joy life has to offer.
I Love You

God's beautiful plan
Is sometimes concealed,
But someday His purpose
Will be fully revealed
Someday God's wisdom
Will make it very plain
Why problems were permitted
And how He uses pain.
Things thought illogical -
Disease, tragedy, fear -
Will someday make sense
When God makes all things clear.
We'll see the Lord's purpose
From Heaven's point of view,
And we will understand
In ways we never knew.
Til we are home with God
Some answers have to wait.
"Lord, we'll TRUST AND OBEY.
Lord, help us walk by faith."
May you know the peace and comfort this heartfelt thought imparts - the ones we love are never gone, they live within our hearts.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart... Proverbs 3:5

The following quotes and lyrics are posted here in honor of Steven. Although I did not know Steven personally, I've gathered from this website that he and his family are dedicated to baseball and youth sports. I am a friend of the Bolding family; Brown Bolding was my little league coach, and Ms. Beth was my 5th and 6th grade teacher. I consider Kevin (Goob) as a best friend, and both Kelly and Monica are two of the sweetest girls I've ever known.
"God, I just love baseball." - Robert Redford in The Natural (1984)
"The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again." - James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams (1989)
"I still get such a bang out of it, playing ball. Same as I did when I first come up. You get out there and the stands are full and everybody is cheering. It is like everbody in the world come to see you. Inside that there is the players in there and there yakking it up and the pitcher throws and your looking for that pill and suddenly there is nothing else in the ballpark you and it and sometimes when your feeling right and there is a groove there and the bat just eases into it and meets that ball. When the bat meets that ball you can feel that ball just give and you know it is going to go a long way. Damn, if you don't feel like your going to live forever." - John Cusac as Buck Weaver in Eight Men Out (1988)
The Farewell Speech
"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and I have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans. Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure I'm lucky. Who wouldn't have considered it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrows? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I'm lucky. When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat and vice versa, sends you a gift, that's something. When everybody down to the groundskeeper and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies, that's something. When you have a father and mother work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body, it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that's the finest I know. I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. And I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for." - July 4, 1939 at Yankee Stadium on Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day
Centerfield
by John C. Fogerty (1985)
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Yeah! I got it, I got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it's time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye!
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Yeah!
Talkin' Baseball
by Terry Cashman (1981)
The whiz kids had won it,
Bobby Thomson had done it,
And Yogi read the comics all the while.
Rock 'n roll was being born,
Marijuana, we would scorn,
So down on the corner,
The national past-time went on trial.
Refrain:
We're talkin' baseball!
Kluszewski, Campanella.
Talkin' baseball!
The Man and Bobby Feller.
The Scooter, the Barber, and the Newc,
They knew them all from Boston to Dubuque.
Especially Willie, Mickey, and the Duke.
Well , Casey was winning,
Hank Aaron was beginning,
One Robbie going out, one coming in.
Kiner and Midget Gaedel,
The Thumper and Mel Parnell,
And Ike was the only one winning down in Washington.
Refrain:
Now my old friend, The Bachelor,
Well, he swore he was the Oklahoma Kid.
And Cookie played hooky,
To go and see the Duke.
And me, I always loved Willie Mays,
Man, those were the days!
Refrain:
Well, now it's the 80's,
And Brett is the greatest,
And Bobby Bonds can play for everyone.
Rose is at the Vet,
And Rusty again is a Met,
And the great Alexander is pitchin' again in Washington.
I'm talkin' baseball!
Like Reggie, Quisenberry.
Talkin' baseball!
Carew and Gaylord Perry,
Seaver, Garvey, Schmidt and Vida Blue,
If Cooperstown is calling, it's no fluke.
They'll be with Willie, Mickey, and the Duke.
Willie, Mickey, and the Duke. (Say hey, say hey, say hey)
It was Willie, Mickey and the Duke (Say hey, say hey, say hey)
I'm talkin' Willie, Mickey and the Duke (Say hey, say hey, say hey)
The Greatest
by Kenny Rogers (1999)
Little Boy, in a baseball hat
Stands in the field with his ball and bat
Says I am the greatest player of them all
Puts his bat on his shoulder and he tosses up his ball
And the ball goes up and the ball comes down
Swings his bat all the way around
The world's so still you can hear the sound
The baseball falls to the ground
Now the little boy doesn't say a word
Picks up his ball, he is undeterred
Says I am the greatest there has ever been
And he grits his teeth and he tries it again
And the ball goes up and the ball comes down
Swings his bat all the way around
The world's so still you can hear the sound
The baseball falls to the ground
He makes no excuses, He shows no fears
He just closes his eyes and listens to the cheers
Little boy, he adjusts his hat
Picks up his ball, stares at his bat
Says I am the greatest the game is on the line
And he gives his all one last time
And the ball goes up like the moon so bright
Swings his bat with all his might
And the world's so still as still can be
And the baseball falls, and that's strike three
Now it's supper time and his mama calls
Little boy starts home with his bat and ball
Says I am the greatest that is a fact
But even I didn't know I could pitch like that

I am sorry to have missed the dedication of the number one field to Steven's memory and in his honor on April 2nd, 2005. From the words of Michelle's email to me and the Shelby County Reporter newspaper article I can see that the day was a wonderful one.
My best to the entire family. And again, I am sorry that I could not share in this day with you. Thank you for the invitation to attend, but my presense was needed at my grandmother's (Dorothy Dimple FLACK Owens) 88th birthday party in Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama.
I am happy and pleased that this dedication to Steven's honor and memory was made. Again, another symbol of what a great and loved person he is.

ROMANS CHAPTER 13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 ¶ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
7 ¶ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11 ¶ And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
The above chapter fully gives from God to our government the power to judge over evil, evil doers and evil done here on earth. The government is ordained by God to control criminal activity. It is time for people to start using the brain God gave them at birth, and make wiser choises concerning others.
DEUTERONOMY CHAPTER 19
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1 ¶ When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;
2 Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
3 Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.
4 And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;
5 As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:
6 Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
7 Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.
8 And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;
9 If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:
10 That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
11 But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
12 Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13 Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14 ¶ Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15 One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
16 If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;
17 Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;
18 And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.
20 And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.
21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
Again, I pray that justice on earth prevail in this and other matters like this. All WILL stand in the light of justice on Judgement Day when we appear before God in our nakedness of soul and life's actions.
The families and all involved remain in my thoughts and prayers daily...especially Monica and Donnie. My love to you all.

I haven't had any contact with Steve in several years but grew up playing ball aginst his All-Star baseball teams and played baseball with him at Wallace-Selma. All the statements I have seen in the guestbook are great and true but I would like to add some words that make me think about Steve: Loyal (He was always there), compassionate (He really cared about peoples feelings), forgiving, and truthful. I shared an apartment with Steve for a year while playing baseball at Wallace. He had a old camaro and I had a old honda, my old honda blew the engine and it was going to take me a while to get it fixed. Steve hauled me everywhere from Selma to Pelham, just anywhere I needed to go. Several times I would have a date or need to go somewhere and he would let me take his car. A couple of times after borrowing his car I would find out that he had to catch a ride or walk to wherever he wanted to go. Steve was a stand up guy and will be missed. It will be great to see Steve in Heaven, I picture a real tan, good looking, green eyed, hat wearing, smiling guy and if he takes his hat off you will see a Hollywood flattop with a little blond spot on the front and a little blond spot on the back tip.

Steven worked briefly for me at Randolph Elementary School. He wanted to try his hand at teaching PE. Two of my favorite stories are as follows.
One day Steven was in the office using the restroom and getting a drink. I spoke to him and happened to glance at the clock. I asked him where his class was. He smiled and said "well, they are outside playing." I told him he could not leave the students unattended. He looked at me puzzled and said "Well I had to use the restroom." So I told him he would have to use the restroom on his break time. He was shocked.
The next story took place on the playground. As I walked outside I noticed Steven had a dip in his mouth. I asked him if he had tobacco in his mouth and he replied "Oh no ma'am, it's back off. I am trying to quit dipping. So I had to tell him he would have to quit on his own time. Once again he was shocked.
Shortly after receiving his first pay check, he decided teaching was not his choice of careers. (He even brought me his check and asked if there was a mistake!)
We gave Steven a going away party and presented him with funny gag gifts for his career in construction. In his goodbye speech, he praised teachers and the awesome responsibility they have. As he hugged me bye, he said the only thing I won't miss about RES is having Mrs. D tell me when to go to the bathroom! Steven truly loved children and enjoyed his time at RES. We think of him fondly and know that he is greatly missed.

On December 10,2004 I lost the love of my life here on earth. From our first time together in 1987 until our last time together in 2004, our life together was LOVE. Steven was patient and kind but most of all LOVE. I feel Steven's purpose for GOD'S WILL must have been accomplished. GOD said,"we were created to become like CHRIST." Steven had so many similarities like CHRIST, one of them was that he always put others before himself and always gave to those in need.
I miss Steven dearly in this tragic death. I find comfort as a believer that when we die we will still be under GOD'S CARE and "will be with the LORD FOREVER." I can hardly wait for the time to be with Steven in Heaven for eternity without heartache and pain.

Steven Spears was my oldest cousin, a job that he took VERY seriously. When I was little, there was never a time we were together when he didn't find an interesting and often unique way to torment me,Natalie, and Sarah Beth. (Some of the most memorable ways being the "human-mop" and the "brain-tickler"). He filled my childhood with happy memories that made me tough and fun-loving. As I got older,Steven took on a different role in my life. He became a person I looked to for advice and guidance. Steven would do anything for his family and he was very protective of the "girls". The moments I shared with him are something I will always hold close.
His death has been a tragedy that I will never recover from, but his death has also been an INSPIRATION. Steven wanted all those he loved to succeed in life and have everything their hearts desired. He pushed you to reach your potential and he challenged you to be great. He was the person we all pray to become.
Though he is no longer here with us, I know that he still wants all of us to make all of our dreams come true and all of our wishes realities. So know matter how sad,lost,or desperate I become, it is Steven's spirit that picks me back up and challenges me to live every day like it is my last. He is still guiding me and protecting me just as he did when I was younger. He is with us all...and I will SMILE, and LAUGH, and LOVE, and REJOICE in his memory every day.

I listed myself as family and friend because I knew Steven since we were both able to play baseball or go to school, and I spent about as many Thanksgivings and Christmas'at the Spears/Reynolds house as I did my own. He, Chris and Daryl were like brothers to me. Steve was a trusted friend who loved to laugh and cut up. He always had that smile on his face, like he knew something you didnt and he wasnt gonna tell ya either. It's tragic that a person of such good character was taken by a senseless act. His memory will live forever within the people who knew him and cared for him. I'm certain that right now he is doing one of two things, playing some kind of ball, or building something. All of us can only hope to have such a full life as Steven did in his short time here. May God Bless him and his family and friends.

On Monday, November 29, 2004, as Pastor of Enon Baptist Church, I had the opportunity to visit with Don and Bessie Reynolds(Steven's Grandparents). We had a nice visit getting to know one another. I learned many things about them, their family and how long they had been members at Enon. Little did we realize that within eleven days their family would experience the darkness and evil of this world and walk through a very difficult and painful season.
Although the circumstances of this event are less than desirable for any family, I have been honored to walk with each of them through these days. From their participation in my life, I hope that I have become a better pastor.
This is a rare family! All across the world, families are becoming more and more estranged and extinct. Not this one that has originated from Don and Bessie Reynolds. My heart has been encouraged and my life has been enriched by the LOVE and UNITY within this family. The strength that has been displayed during this time has been AMAZING!
One verse comes to mind as I have watched this family during this season. The Apostle Paul says in Philippians 4.7, "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will gaurd your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
I did not know Steven Spears personally, but have been influenced by him greatly through his death. I have heard many stories and listened to many memories from those who knew him for just a few minutes to those who knew him all of his life. If I could sum it all up; I would say that Steven Spears was a man of FAITH, FAMILY, FRIENDS and FUN. To me, Steven was the Total Package! I have not heard one negative attribute about the kind of life that he chose to live.
My life verse is Romans 8.28, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to HIS purpose."
On Tuesday, January 18, 2005, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit with Michelle Spears
(Steven's Sister-In-Law). It was a wonderful evening! We experienced Ecclesiastes 3.1-10 during our time together... There is definately a time for everything! It was only the beginning, but at the conclusion of our visit, Michelle prayed to receive Jesus Christ as her Personal Savior. It was a beautiful and sweet moment; one that will never be forgotten. I was reminded of that time in my life many years ago.
In Genesis 50.19-20, Joseph said to his brothers, "Do not be afraid, for I am in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive."
I am certainly taking advantage of the opportunities that He gives me here on this earth, but I am so much more looking forward to being in my real home that is being prepared for me right now. There are many Biblical heroes that I wish to meet, but I want to find those whom I never had the opportunity to meet here on earth and Steven Spears will be one of them.
This family is dear to me and holds a special place in my heart! Not a day goes by that I do not think of them in some way and communicate to the Father on their behalf.

I'm writing on behalf of my children as well as myself. We all love Steven so much and miss seeing him every day. The other day, I took Conner and Chloe to Johnny Rockets and they got balloons. Conner, couldn't wait to get home and let his balloon go so it would go to his Uncle Buck. Not a day goes by that Conner doesn't have something to say about him. Chloe likes to get her pretend phone and tell people it's Uncle Buck on the phone. When Chris and Steven would get home from work in the afternoon, Chloe would have to get a hug and kiss from her Uncle Buck. Sometimes he would get in his truck right when they got to the house and then he would see Chloe with her arms out and he would come running to pick her up. Austin misses him deeply but keeps it to himself. Steven loved the kids so much and we loved him. I know we will always miss him but we too look forward to the day when our family and friends will reunite in God's Kingdom.

Of course I was just kidding around, but the thing is, Steve would of been fine with that.If that is what would have made Monica happy, then he would have been happy too!

I can't begin to describe the love that I have for my family. I have two of the greatest big brothers in the world. They have and always will be my heroes. There are certain qualities that a genuine brotherhood shares (Love, Loyalty, Trust, Respect, and Honor). Personally I have always had all of these things with my brothers. Steven Spears was shot on December 10, 2004; however nothing can ever take away the bond that we shared, the brotherhood that can't be broken. Steven always talked to me about being a man of integrity. He possessed qualities that you hope your children will have, that you hope you can implement into your own life. I love him and will respect him always. My oldest brother was and will be an example of how to live for the rest of my life. The only thing that I know to do is live a good life for Jesus, so that I will meet him at the gates of heaven. I could not have been prouder to have Steven as my brother. I pray for the healing of Monica, Chris, Daryl, Steve, Donnie, Granny, GranDad, Austin, Conner, Chloe, Michelle, Sherry and others that I presently do not know, but who do exist and feel this pain.
Love one another as Steven loved each of you...fully....for in each other is where you will find your refuge. And never forget that God is always there to listen and provide a shoulder for you. May God Bless each and everyone of you.
Humbly and Sincerely,
Phyllis J. K. Owens
