I found my grandfathers discharge papers and decided to see if I could find a picture of the ships he served on in the war and came across your site. I very excited to see that you not only had a couple pictures but that you also had a crew list. My grand father was Herbert H. Hansen. I just wanted to say thank you for having this information and pictures up on the web! It means a lot to be able to find information like this.

My mother is the youngest daughter of Thaddeus Gilfedder from Montreal. The rest of his family were from Ireland but settled in the Boston area. I don't know much about them and my grandfather Gilfedder died of cancer in 1942 when my mother was 12. Her oldest sister may have more details but she is for the time being not available as with many northern folk, she is in Florida for the winter. I would love to know more about the Gilfedders. If you know of a website where I might find out more, I would love to have it. My grandmother, Mary McGinn Gilfedder lived in Montreal, raised her four children, ran her husband's trucking firm after his premature death and lived to a ripe old age of 103!

Hey came across this page looking for images of the O'Donovan Family Crest. Just wanted to say We have a Family bible that dates back to the 1800's I believe. Not sure the earliest date, but it's in my Grandmother's posession. Didn't know if you were looking for more info on the Family Tree? -Michael Hostetler

WoW!!! This is awesome. I know my great grandfather came over on the boat during the famine. I had a hard time finding out much about my family before they came to the U.S. other than tidbits I could find in books but it was never anything much! Thanks for the great info!!

Greetings...I am researching the family history of my wife's family living in the Boston area. We are trying to find her GGGrandfathers death location. He is the Benjamin James Walker shown as deserting from Fair Oaks, VA. in 1862. Actually, he was wounded, transferred to the US Army Hospital at Patterson Park in Baltimore, then, on to the US Army Hospital in Philadelphia. His muster record indicates that he was on furlough from the hospital, but, did not return. His wife remarries in 1865 and her marriage license indicates she was a widow. We cannot find the remainder of Benjamin's life after 1862. His wife is later buried at Holy Cross with the son of her second marriage. Do you have further information about the soldiers who served with Company I, of the 1st Infantry? I am a volunteer for the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis and a volunteer for the RAOGK.com organization. Appreciate any further information you may have. Regards...Bob

I live in Dubuque, Iowa. I was 8 years old in the spring of 1945. My older brother, Vern, was 19 years old and was a shipmate of Frank Donovan on SC982. My brother is 81 years old and is still living. (On your web page for SC982 there is a picture of a group horsing around pretending they were all slave driven. He is the sailor bending over a mop as another shipmate feighs whipping him with a belt.) I am writing an account of his experiences during the typhoon on Good Friday of 1945. I intend that his story be kept in family memory. Thank you for doing so much research on SC982. It is making my task much easier.
