Also I would like to locate Mavity cemetery where Deborah (Ryker) Watts is buried.

My husband Terry McAlister is a descedant of the Ryker-Riker family. His mother is Evelyn Scott. Her father is Raymond Scott. His father is Aaron Scott. Aaron Scott's mother is Mary White. Mary White's father is Samuel White. Samuel White's parents are William White and Rachel Ryker/Riker. Rachel's father is Col. John Riker. His father is Gerardus Riker and so the lineage continues backward from that point.
We have found it fascinating to be able to trace his lineage back through the Ryker-Riker family as well as the Des Marets family, as Gerardus was married to Rachel Demarest.

In getting my genealogy put into Ancestry.com I happened upon this website. My gggrandfather was Loreenzo Dow Cox and was married to Mary W. Ryker, daughter of Gerardus Jared Ryker. I didn't realize they were of Dutch descent. Thanks to all for your hard work on the family. I'm only beginning so am quite impressed. My mother had begun genealogy on all of our family in the 1970's but I've postponed working on it until now. She'd be very pleased to know that I will carry this on and add family information!

I am going to represent my Riker lineage at the 2007 GATHERING OF DUTCH COUSINS reunion in Shelbyville, IN, present maps, a talk on the family history as it relates to the Low Dutch Colony of Kentucky [1780], their connection to the Shaker religious society, their relationship to the Banta and Montfort families of the Low Dutch Colony. I plan to do a thorough job of presenting the history of the family and hope it goes over well with the rest of the Dutch/French Huguenot descendants of the Low Dutch Colony. I descend from Polly Riker, a niece to Gerardus Riker...her father was his older brother, Abraham. She married John Banta, son of the second wife [Antie Demarest], of Hendrick Banta 3rd, the undisputed leader/patriarch of the Low Dutch Colony. Polly and her husband held the first organized meeting of the Shaker religious society on their farm in Feb 1802 in Shelby County, KY, and were among the first five families to join the formation of the society later that summer. They moved to the Pleasant Hill Shaker village in Dec 1807 with their daughter, Polly Banta Montfort [husband of Francis Montfort Jr...a grandson of Hendrick Banta 3rd through his first wife, Rachel Brower....just call me Double Dutch.] Along with this daughter, son in law and their three children, most all of their other children would also join the society though two would later leave to marry. Polly Riker Banta died in 1838 is buried at Shakertown in Mercer County, KY...her husband moved to the South Union Shaker village near Bowling Green, KY late in 1815 and died within 2 years of his arrival...he is buried at that village. Daughter Polly and her husband, Francis Montfort Jr are my gtgtgt grandparents..both are buried at Shakertown. All three of their children who went in with their parents in March of 1806 left the society as they reached the age of consent, which in KY was 21. All three of them have descendants. If anyone is interested in this line, let me know and I will share with you.
Of the other children of Polly Riker Banta and her husband, known as Shaker John Banta......
Anna, Leah/Love, Rachel and Rebecca joined with their parents in 1806 and all four remained as Shakers till their deaths. John Logan left the Shakers at age 13 and latter married Elizabeth Vories, Abram left ehe Shakers to marry Elizabeth Reynolds [also a Shaker who left the society], Henry who married Nancy DeMott, and Elizabeth who may have married a Shaw.
I have a website for the MONTFORT and related families at http://bar-b-k.tripod.com THE MONTFORT FAMILY: A NARRATIVE.
My sources include the original Shaker journals at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, KY; at Harrodsburg Historical Society in Harrodsburg, KY; Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio; the archives at Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, Mercer County, KY; Western KY University Library and Archives, Bowling Green, KY [also using any microfilmed copies of original journals found at each of these sites in addition to the originals at the Filson]; Mercer, Henry, Jefferson, Shelby County, KY records; Jefferson, Harrison, Switzerland County, IN records and a variety of books in my own collection relating to the Low Dutch, the Shakers, the Banta, Montfort, Riker, Terhune, Demarest, Brinckerhoff, Marston, Bloedgoedt, Sohier, dePlanck, Stryker families and others I have almost certainly forgotten.
Thank you.

Have to look at our records to give the other names of his line back to Abraham but I know it exists. Arthur was very interested and took a trip back to Holland and the Netherlands. Interesting. My grandmother was Edna Adelaide Riker. She was born in NYC on, she said, the family farm around 1880. She and her sibs were orphaned while she was a schoolgirl, however, and she was thereafter raised (quite grandly, evidently) by a family called "Hance." She married Elvina D. Trippe and, in 1914, gave birth to my mother, Irene Louise Trippe.
I see no reference to grandmother on this site, but if anyone could point me in the direction of her line I'd be most grateful.
Thanks,

She never responded. I have set up a public record on Ancestry.com called "Blance Wilson Snyder Pruitt" I have added what I can from David Steele Wilson down to my children. I literally stumbled upon this site by accident. I read Carl's entry about the Belem, Brazil Rikers and wanted to say that I am a descendent of Robert Henry Riker through my mother Bonnie Riker. Her father, Otavio, was born (1901) and raised in Brazil until he was 19 when he left and went to work for Henry Ford in Detroit, MI, along with 2 of his brothers.
I will admit that I don't know a whole lot but there is one surviving brother to my grandfather in Belem, Jose and his wife Florinda. They have two children, David Bowman Riker and Jane, not sure of her married name.
After reading this site, my interest in my genealogy has been renewed. Please feel free to email me anytime.

Fascinating research and information! Thanks....so glad I found this site.
I've communicated with years with folks looking for the ancestors of Egbert Lent (b. 1798 in Peekskill, NY). I have some handwritten family papers that say his mother's maiden name was Underwood. Sure seems like Egbert's connection would be to Tobias Lent and Hannah Underwood, but
still not totally sure on that fact. Any thoughts?

By the way, as a little girl I remember gramma Evelyn saying that she was a cousin of Louise Alexander Eisenhower (Edgar M's first wife) & I know Louise's mother's maiden name is Ryker, but can't find her mother's first name, etc., even thru the Eisenhower Library, etc. Of course they didn't even have Edgar's date of death, which I gave them from the obit I have of his from a box of old family photos, etc.
Thanx again!

Hi, this is a wonderful website and I have learned so much. I never get tired reading the history of the Rykers and our related families. My 2nd great grandparents were Samuel M. Ryker and Sarah C. Anderson. Their daughter Ada B. Ryker is my great grandmother. She married Riley Miller and then they moved to Knox City, Missouri and then to Fruita, Colorado. Sarah and Ada are buried at the Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita, Colorado. I'm not sure, but I think there are other families buried at Elmwood Cemetery that are a part of the Ryker family. I found a Jesse T. Demaree, Post family and a Cox family. On McGoogle, type in "Elmwood Cemetery in Fruita, Colorado" and you can search the cemetery list. Thanks, Sharon Jones

We are so glad to see this- good job.
My husband descend from Abraham Riker who went to Beauford, GA. about the same time his brother,Gerardus, went to Ky.
Abraham's son was lost at sea. His two young sons, Robert Henry and David returned to the old family home. We can not find who/where they lived- New Jersey or New York?
They were in Charleston, S.C. as young men, married and continued to live there until after the Civil War. Robert Henry and his family moved to Brazil. David continued to live in Charleston.
My husband's Grandmother returned to the States to go to school, met and maried a young man from Tennessee-where they continued to live. |

Please forgive a mistake that I made in posting my first message. My mother's cousin, Kenneth Wilton Ryker, was the compiler of the genealogy book, not my grandfathers brother. That would have been Walter Newton Ryker, Kenneth's father. Sorry.

I was so excited to come across this site. It is even from MY family. How wonderful. My mother, Joyce Ryker Clem Gaylord, is the daughter of Russell Allen Ryker whose brother Kenneth Wilton Ryker compiled the Ryker Family History and Genealogy book. Much of what is written in that book is also on this site. But there is a bit more information and I have spent quite a bit of time here. My mother will just be tickled to see this!

I am just starting my search for ancestors, though I can add an interesting place for Rykers. My father, Estus Wesley Ryker was born in Ryker, Arkansas (at least it's on his birth certificate) in Newton County Arkansas. His father was Cecil Carl Ryker. I welcome any correspondence from other Rykers that can push me forward in my search. By the way, I really enjoy the site and am sure I will be back for more.

My husband's name is Brian James Riker and his father's is Dennis James Riker. The only other info we have is that the family is from the northern area of New Jersey and my husband's grandfather is/was William. We don't know if the grandfather is deceased or not. Brian has a brother, Kevin John and we all reide in notheastern PA. If anyone has any info to share it would be appreciated.

(She was a member of a prominent New England Family that can be traced back quite far!!) If any one has any information on this line of the Rikers I would love to hear from you!!
This is a great site! I have been a member of the Ryker-Riker Society for quite a few years, yet thisa is the first time I visited the website!

Name: Connie Hults Reed <reeder@chartertn.net> Date: 2000-10-03 Comments:
I am related to the Rikers through my mother, Llewellyn M.Riker Hults (born 4/18/23).
Her father was Robert Emerson Riker (born 1879 in Newark, NJ; death ?). He & my grandmother (Lela Mae McCall from Georgia) were married in 1910
They had 6 children: Robert Harry (9/26/09-around 98; married Sylvia), Jessie Mae (10/21/11-1998; 1st husband - Emmett Gulley) , Mary (died as a child), Clara Elizabeth (1/4/17; first husband - Jake Walker; lives in Fla.), John Joseph (8/16/20 - 5/87; married Marge Norris in Connecticut), and my mother,Llewellyn Marie (4/18/23; married my father John Joseph Hults 1/10/45 in Albany Indiana; she grew up in Farmland, IN)
Robert Emerson's father was Robert Riker (born 1850 in ?New York? and died after 1930; married to a Ziegler born in 1850 and died after 1930)
They had 6 children: Robert Emerson (my great-grandfather), Jessie (E. Orange, N.J.), Florence (married Jack Moore)(E. Orange, N.J.), Edith (?husband a doctor?), Harry (married to Lou) (E. Orange, N.J.)
That is as far back as I know. My cousin Llewellyn Gulley McIntyre sent me this e-mail address. As far as I can tell, none of "our" Riker family knows any farther back than what I just described. Since this is the first time I have accessed this site, I don't know how it works. Perhaps there is someone out there who knows more about our specific line. Would love to hear from you.

I have been trying (unsuccesssfully) to reach someone about Rachel D. Ryker married to Wm. B. Lott. I believe some of the websites might contain an error. I would be glad to share my sources.
This email was sent to me regarding Rachel D.:
According to information at familysearch.org, this Rachel Ryker was the daughter of Gerardus Ryker and Martisha Wilhite. I only have my direct line on the Internet and do not attempt to follow colateral lines very far. Your family is descended from the Gerardus Ryker and Rachel Demaree on my website. Bill LaBach.

You have a Rachel R. listed b 1818. I am wondering if it should be Rachel D. Ryker and Wm. B. Lott. Both Rachel D. and Wm. B. Lott are buried in Ryker's Ridge along with their son, James W. Lott. They are also listed in various census.
Thank you for your help,
Dee

Hello! I may be from a branch of Rikers not represented in
your database. My grandmother was Rachel Riker Roll. Her
father was Abraham Riker, a mason, and building inspector for
the City of Newark, NJ. he is buried in Fairmount Cemetery.
Newark. Born in 1851 and died 1930. Also known as Abram.
His wife was Sarah Russell of whom I know nothing except her
birth year 1851 and yr. of death 1926. Rachel had six
children and one is my father, Arthur Abram Roll. Pearl
Roll Bassett, one of his sisters is still alive at age 85.
Can you help me locate my branch of Rikers going back
before my great grandfather?
Neither my Abraham or Rachel nor a sister Sarah Riker
appear in your database.
What about the wealth generated from the Amacajam-
Bogardus estate? This was the real estate wealth that the
Vanderbilt family took away from the Rikers when the Rikers fled
NYC in the Revolution and went back to Holland. Abraham
spent some time trying to track it down but had no succes.
What is the Amacajam-Bogardus estate? Do you know?
My father had always told me we were related to the
Vanderbilts. Today is the first time I have that at least
verified by your chart of related families.I'm looking
forward to more details.
Sincerely,
Beth Roll Smith

There is a tremendous Riker history in Champaign County, Ohio in St. Paris, a small community that turned out the world-famous Pony Wagons in the 1880's & 1890's. There is a book written in 1948 that I own titled "The Pony Wagon Town" by Ben Riker that is now out of print. Any researchers needing Riker info from St. Paris (1830's to 1950) let me know. This line descended from Frederick Riker (b. 1743 PA)and Catherine Hannan. Frederick was the son of William Riker from Saxony, Germany, born 1716.

I am particularly pleased to see the maps showing the locations of early Ryker property on Long Island and in Manhattan. Until about a year ago I could trace my Lamb line back to S.C. in 1797 then I was put in touch with the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of NYC and rather quickly traced our line back to the marriage of Alexander Lamb & Lysbeth Coninck NYC 1688 and then to John Lamb & Christina Lent circa 1732. Thanks for your delightful enhancement of my knowledge.
