Hello Michael, I just wanted to tell you we all appreciate how much you have done for our mutual Dungan family. I appreciate the fact that you presented to me the details of the "Royal Connection" and let me discover the truth myself. I appreciate the fact that you are devoted to the Dungans, old and newer, and are going to make your own website one for all of us and our lines. Don't give up. You have a talent for this search and a devotion that I understand. There is so much hidden for us to find.
I actually found a royal connection through Lewis Latham's line. You have probably found it also. One of these days I'll post it on my own Dungan site for all to see it. Visit us soon.

I read your research with great interest, however, as my husband is an Australian Dungan, fourth generation, I see no correlation at present. Two, maybe three brothers came from Dublin to Australia, one then went to New Zealand, in the early 1800's and I can tell you it is a very difficult job trying to get information from shipping records etc when you have no dates and no idea of the ship's name on which they arrived. I plod onwards, now with some assistance from a distant cousin recently met and together we hopefully will find the missing pieces.
Thank you for sharing your work,

I am writing from Justice memory--since I am on vacation.
I would like to see you tie in the Doyle family of Doylestown, Bucks Co, PA. They have genealogy related to Edward (not Edmund) Doyle of Ireland via RI (not "Lion of Liverpool"). (=Justice info) who married Rebecca Dungan, dau of Rev Thomas. (Coldsprings, Bucks Co, PA) is now Suburban Water Plant #2 between egely and Tullytown at the site of the present Edgely Ycht Club. The grave yard for Rev. Thos and several early PA baptist ministers was developed over and cannot be located.
Therefore all the Doyles of Bucks County are also Dungans. Edward and Rebecca Doyle kids and grandkids and those of Americans Wm and Thos Dungan owned about 1/3 of Doylestown during the Rev War era, in 5-6 separate parcels. One includes the HS and Margaret Mead House, another Castle Park, and the two parcels that included the NW and NE jct of State (202) and Main (611), with the present Starbucks in old Doyle's Tavern. I have some good resources from Spruance Library and a great booklet on old Doylestown I would bequeath to a dedicated Dungan genealogist.
It is interesting that a Bartlett is doing the Weavers. Rev Thomas sister, Barbara married a Bartlett. Since Rev. Thomas expunged the Dungan surname from RI by his move to PA, I would love to see someone add the Bartlett RI colonial genealogy, since their children are just as Dungan/Latham as Rev Thomas'. Since his other sister, Frances, Married ortsmouth Compact co-signer ??Randall Holden, who along with conroversial Samuel Gorton founded Warwick (Shawomet), a Holden RI colonial genealogy.
Another conflict in Justice comes from the Holmes Map of Colonial PA shortly after 1682. It strangely includes Clement Dungan as well as Wm and Thos as patent owners of the (Cold Springs) land grant and shows its location. Yes I have this map. These are children of Rev. Thos. (Justice says patentees are Rev. Thos and his brother, Wm, based on the evidence that his children would be too young, using the Weaver/Freeborn dates and a single reference to a "Wm and Jane Dungan" attnding a PA meeting. Therefore, I would like to see a search for records on Rev Thos' brother, Wm, in RI and PA. There is so much on Rev Thos, Barbara and Frances, but not a whisper on Wm. The Penn patent was 1682, but Rev Thos arr in PA 1684. Rev son Wm married in RI and Rebecca married Doyle by 1685?? I think this conflicting weak evidence makes the identity of the patentees unproved.)
In Newport, Frances Clarke Vaughan headstone can be found with difficulty and is misspelled "Francis" and is getting nearly illegible. If there is such a thing as (the Governors Plot), it isn't easily recognized. She was one of the lucky ones to hve her wooden marker replaced several years later by stonecutters.
So... consider adding Bartlett, Holden, and a search for London-born Wm Latham Dungan Clarke records. Gary

Thanks for this great information. I am the great granddaughter of Morris William Dungan (father of Ethel Clementine), a fascinating man that I loved to listen to tell stories and who died when I was 14. His name appeared in what I believe you're referring to as the Justice Book. I was in about 9th grade when I saw this book for the first time and I dove into it. From what I'm gathering from the information you compiled, I will stop telling people that I descended from British royalty (not exactly a proud past anyway, as you think about it). I don't spend a lot of time doing geneological research, and usually get lost in the abundance of information, but I was thrilled to come across your web site. I will be back to peek at it again when I have a few hours to spare.
Thanks again for correcting 40 years of misinformation.

It is suspected by my relitives we were from the Rev. Thomas Dungan ancestry and i have some information that goes back to how it all spose to have begain in Southern Ireland the Sir name DunO'Gan. It was changed to Dungan when some DunO'Gan somehow went to England and married into the Kingdom of England
ancestry. Then Thomas father died at St. Martins and his wife remarried and this is where it begains histry at Rhoad Island
and still being an subject of the King of Enland till Sgt. Thomas Dungan won his freedom for serving as an Malitia soldier.
Any how all i have other wise is some copy of an very old picture of an Robert Dungan And And wife i guess the last name Leir. My grandfather Marlin Dungan and his siblings
also in this very old picture.
I wish i knew some others who might have worked with my relitives in years past about this. They got me to inter my info in the book of Dungan's an few years ago is all besides
the documents (copy's) i was given of the linnage. Shure is alout of info. I wonder if'n because of the North And South
war much info was destroyed by fires or such? that stops us from knowing more where things seem to have gotten quiet so as i cant seem to understand the whole process of the Dungan

Thank you for putting this info on the internet. I have enjoyed reading the material.
My line is George White and Eunice Dungan. They m. 12 Feb 1795 in Washington Co. VA. Eunice was the d/o Elisha and Hannah Borden Dungan. George White d. in Casey Co. KY on 17 Feb 1824. At that time, his widow was Jane E. Lewis, d/o John Frances Penny Lewis and Nancy Davis. It appears that Eunice Dungan died after birth of son, ESON WHITE (b. Feb 1820 in Casey or Lincoln Co. KY). George named 15 children in his will. My gr-gr grandfather was George Washington White (b. May of 1817 in Casey Co. KY). George W. White m. Lucy Ann Baker in Owen Co. IN on 23 March 1846. He remarried Sarah Meloni Turner on 19 Aug 1851, Robinson, Crawford Co. IL.
I have been trying to find some sort of documentation that shows Eunice Dungan as d/o Elisha and Hannah Borden Dungan. The only thing I have is from a lost page in my late mother's Bible. I believe George White to be the s/o Joseph White Jr. of Anson Co. NC and his first wife, Sarah Hutchinson or Hutcherson. Joseph's 2nd wife was Sarah Headley.
Thanks once again.

I am a descendent of the Irish branch of the Latham family. Our ancestor, one Oliver de Latham was a captain in Cromwell's army and went with him from Ormskirk, England, to Ireland in about 1650. He married a Irish girl, Mary Sall in Cashel in 1653. She was the daughter of James Sall, a wealthy land owner who was apparently shot and killed by Cromwell's army. Oliver de Latham was supposed to be of the Lathams from Ormskirk. I am trying to link him to his family in England, who, as family legend has it, disinherited him for marrying a Catholic. I am not sure but I believe that this David Kanouse was my Greatgrandfather wife of Elizabeth Flesher of Illinois. I have been searching for his whereabouts for over thirty years, thus any information that you might have would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I am interested in the Dungan family for their association with the Mason family of Nashville area, TN.
Can any one help with the following:From Goodspeeds Biography - TN Genweb search for Mason
Rev. William A. Dungan was born in Madison County, Tenn., in 1840, and is a son of Thomas M. and Nancy M. (Mason) Dungan, and grandson of William Dungan. The latter was born in Illinois and was left an orphan in his infancy and was adopted by a Mr. Mitchell. He was brought to Tennessee in his youth and here resided until his death in 1850. He was a true Christian and was noted for his honesty. We give the following anecdote as an illustration of the same. He and a neighbor traded horses and after a few days each concluded he had the best of the bargain, and that it was his duty to give the other some extra compensation, so each started with a grist of wheat and after meeting and learning of the other’s intention, neither would yield, but concluded to give the grists to a poor neighboring widow. Thomas M. Dungan was born in Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1813, and was married January 3, 1837. He died in Crockett County, September 10, 1884, at his son William A’s. His wife was born in Tennessee in 1816, and died August 4, 1865. Both were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Mrs. Dungan was a daughter of Abram and Margaret Mason, who were from the Northern States, and located in Madison (now Crockett County), in 1835. Mr. Mason was a large land-holder and accumulated a large fortune. He was noted for his benevolence, and he and Mrs. Mason were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Our subject, William A. Dungan, was educated at Mason’s Grove, and in 1861 enlisted in Company I, Sixth Tennessee Infantry, afterward Company K, Sixth and Ninth Regiments consolidated, and served through the war. He was trice wounded through the left knee, once at Shiloh and once at Chickamauga, and was one of only four of an original company of 101 men to surrender at Greensboro, N. C., April 26, 1865. He made his way home, mostly on foot, and after attending school one session began farming. October 1, 1867, he married Mary B., daughter of Hiram and Martha W. Adams. She was born in Madison County, November 65, 1847. After his marriage Mr. Dungan located on 115 acres of land, and in 1880 became a Methodist Episcopal divine, and has worked zealously for the advancement of the cause of Christianity. He is a Democrat, and is an advocate of all temperance organizations. In 1886 he joined the Memphis Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

I would really like to find the source wherein Mr. Justice stated that Ann Rebecca was married to Thomas Bavington. I know that Thomas Bavington was in both Washington Co., PA records and Beaver Co., PA records but he was married to Elizabeth Johnston. According to records of Washington Co., PA. Ann Rebecca was the wife of Charles Bevington who died in about 1808 as she is listed with just her children in the 1810 Washington Co., PA census. I didn't know Ann Rebecca's surname until I learned about the Justice book. Now all I need to do is find a source linking Ann Rebecca Dungan to the Bavington/Bevington family. Dorothy

Name: Mike Hillman <hillman@texas.net> Date: 2001-05-05 Comments:
Dear Michael,
I have been researching the onomastic origin of the name DUNGAN. In the initial phase of my search I found the name Dungen with Anglo Saxon roots, and assumed the name became 'Irish' by way of the Scottish Lowlands where the Anglo Saxons comingled with the Border Scots. However,in Phase Three of my research I finally found conclusive evidence that Dungan is a 'pure Irish' name of Celtic/Gaelic origin. I have included information from GoIreland.com which is the best discourse on the onomastic roots of the surname. It is entirely possible that the English name Dungen/Dungan is from Anglo Saxon origin, but the Irish name is pure Gaelic. I am including copies of correspondance with Janet Dungan and Sherry Dungan.
Phase One:
Dear Janet,
I am curious as to the onomastic history of the name Dungan. Do you have any knowledge of the etymology of the name?
When the label 'Irish' is used in reference to a family name it can be interpreted in three possible ways. The broadest possible interpretation is anyone who once lived in Ireland. The French Huguenots immigrated to Northern Ireland so under the broad interpretation Jean Pierre Le Fleur is an Irish name. Clearly that is not what is meant by 'Irish' name.
The second level of Irish names often includes names from
both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Some names are assumed
to be Irish if by Irish is meant names of the 17th and 18th
century that have lived in 'greater Ireland' for several
generations.
The problem: this category includes the Scots Irish. This
inclusion poses two further problems. Scots Irish names are more Scottish than Irish. And they also include a large dose of Anglo Saxon names. The Scots Irish were Celtic Lowlanders who comingled with the Anglo Saxons before relocating to the Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland.
The Scots Irish (Ulster Scots), were then and are today,
considered separate and apart from the pure Irish. The term 'pure Irish' is the third level for the meaning of interpretation of an Irish name.
Pure Irish means Celtic (Gaelic) Irish, unadulterated by Scots, French,or Anglo Saxon. It is well known that Dunnigan, Dunagan, Dunegan, and Donegan are considered common Irish names. Dungan is just one vowel away from those famous Irish names. Even though spelled Dungan the name may have been pronounced 'Dun-a-gan' in both Ireland and Mississippi.
On my GGGrandmother's marriage certificate her maiden name is spelled Dunagan and Dunegan on the same document! She was the daughter of Jacob Dungan and Caroline McGrew. Jacob was the brother of John Dungan and son of William Dungan. The clerk who wrote the certificate probably spelled the names the way they were pronounced. The Deep South drawl has a tendecy to stretch words so the name sounded more Dun-uh-gan than Dungan.
The following words have similar meanings: dun, don, down, dune. Downey is an Irish name meaning a man who lives on a hill. A hilly area was referred to as 'the downs'. A dune is a hill of sand. Dun referrs to a hill and also a fort. In Old German the word dung meant a 'mound'. The word 'dungen' is known to be a German word for somebody who lived on a mound.
Mound dwellers were common in prehistoric times. They lived in and around lakes and marshes. Mounds provided better drainage and safety from flooding. Mound dwellers would live in the middle of a lake as a defensive strategy. The lake acted as a moat so mound dwellers pioneered the concept that led to castles. In fact, the word 'dun' was
later used to mean castle or fort. What this indicates is that Dungen/ Dungan is an ancient Anglo Saxon name whose origin traces literally from the Stone Age.
Dun also has another meaning in Irish. The popular name Duncan simply means 'dark head'. Dun can mean brown, as in a dun horse. Once again there are Germanic similarities. The following Germanwords bear a striking resemblance:
die Dune - dune;
dunkel - dark;
die Dunkelheit - darkness;
die Dunst - haze, mist;
dunstig - hazy; dunsten - braise, stew.
Websters Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary:
p. 250, down - n [ Middle English doun hill, from Old English dun; akin to Old Norse dunn down of feathers] 1. archaic a: HILL b: DUNE.
2. an undulating usually treeless upland with sparse soil - usually used in plural. 3. a sheep of any breed originating in the downs of Southern England.
p. 257, dun - adj [ME, from Old English dunn - more at dusk].
There is one other possible meaning of dun. The Irish word for judge is 'dan'. This could be where the phrase 'to dun someone' comes from. A 'dun' could be a court order, an officer of the court who collected fines or even slang for the judge.
Two common themes keep appearing in the definitions of the word dun,
First: is mound, hill. Second: dark, haze, dusk.
Possible derivations of the name Dungan can be speculated:
a person who lived on a mound, hill, or village on a hill.
a person living in a castle or fortress.
a person with dark hair, complexion, or suntanned.
a judge or agent of the court.
If there are equal numbers of English with the name Dungan, my guess is it is of Anglo Saxon origin and hitched a ride to Ireland on the coattails of the Lowland Scots who immigrated to the Ulster Plantation. I noticed that Benjamin Dungan was buried in Pennepack Baptist church.
This Protestant connection may be further indication of a Scots Irish heritage.
One possible explanation of language similarities is that the Germanic peoples come from the same Celtic background as the Irish, Scots, Welsh, and Manx. Certain words common to all these language groups could be evidence of that fact.

Phase Two:
Janet,
More interesting information about the name Dungan.
So far I cannot find the name Dungan on any list of
names or in a surname dictionary as a line item. The
only place I've found it is in footnotes, as follows:
A Dictionary of Surnames, Hanks & Hodges
DONEGAN -
Irish: Anglicized form of Gael. O Donnagain
'descendant of Donnagan', a personal name from a
dim. of donn brown, dark (see Dunn 1).
Vars. : Dunnigan, Doonican, Dunegain(e), *Duncan;
O'Donegan, O'Donegaine, *O'Dungan.
DUNCAN -
Scots and Irish : 1. Anglicized form of Gael.
Duinnchinn, a byname composed of the elements
donn dark, brown (see Dunn 1) + ceann head.
2. Var. of *Donegan.
Pats. (from 1) : Duncanson, Dunkinson.
DUNG -
Low German : topographic name for someone
who lived on a piece of raised dry land in marshy
surroundings, or habitation name from any of the
various places named with the dial. term for such a
patch of land.
Vars. : Dungs, *Dungen, Dunk, Donk; Dunkmann,
Von der Dunk.
Cogns. : Du. : *Van Dongen, Van Donks.
At this point the name could be either Irish (Celtic, Gael)
or Anglo Saxon. Once again, the Germans probably come
from Celtic roots as well, therefore some words may mean
the same in the ancient Tuetonic and ancient Celtic.
Websters Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary, p. 913
Teuton, Teutonic [Latin Teutoni, pl.] 1 : a member
of an ancient prob. Germanic or Celtic people.

(O) DONEGAN, Dungan
Trace your ancestor here
Ó Donnagßn is the surname of at least four distinct septs of mediaeval Ireland. Nineteenth century birth statistics record an average of 50 registrations for Donegan and its variants, 18 of which were in Leinster, 13 in Munster, 15 in Ulster and 4 in Connacht. The best available sources of comparison in this respect for previous periods are the "census" of 1659 and the Fiants of 1540 to 1601. These show that in the seventeenth century the name was numerous in the barony of Rathconrath, Co. Westmeath and in the barony of Athlone. There were a good number in Co. Sligo also; whereas two or three generations earlier O'Donegans were found not only in west Leinster but also to an equal extent in Co. Cork and adjacent parts of Munster. The latter, no doubt, were of the once powerful sept of Muscraidhe Tri Maighe, alias O'Donegan's country, which lies in the baronies of Orrery and Duhallow in the north-western part of the county. In the thirteenth century their territory passed for the most part into the possession of the Norman Barrys. In south-west Cork the small sept of Ó Donnagßin became tributary to O'Sullivan Beare; while that of Ara, in north Tipperary, was dispersed by the O'Briens whose chief there became Mac I Brien Ara. The Annals of Loch Cé record the death in 1029 of Donnchadh Ó Donnagßin King of Fernmhagh (Farney, Co. Monaghan) and in 1113 of Ó Donnagßin "royal heir" thereof. Ulstermen of note of the name were John Dongan, Bishop of Down from 1394 to 1412 and Dr. Edmund Dunnegan, Bishop of Down & Connor, who died in prison in 1629. The Westmeath O'Donegans, who held the manor of Kildrought, Co. Kildare, from the Earls of Kildare, were also established in Leix and Offaly, where their territory was formerly known as Críoch Dungan (i.e. Dungan's or O'Donegan's country). Of this family was Thomas Donegan or Dongan Earl of Limerick, framer of the celebrated New York Dongan Charter of 1686; his elder brother the first Earl was attainted as a Jacobite in 1691: their father was Sir John Dongan, Bart., of Castletown, Co. Kildare. Another distinguished member of the Castletown family was Thomas Dongan (c. 1595-1663), a lawyer who, after being reduced to dire poverty by the aftermath of the Rising of 1641, became a Baron of the Exchequer at the Restoration. Dunegan Castle in Co. Westmeath is a few miles northeast of Athlone. [end]
Oddly enough another souce, <Ireland.com>, connects the name Dongan with the name Cunningham but it is a confusing discussion of the name and not very helpful. If anyone else has done onomastic research and has further information I would like to learn more about the historical etymology of the surname DUNGAN.

Michael,
I have a question regarding the children of Francis Latham and William Dungan. Justice records that they had four children: Barbara, Frances, William and Thomas. Another source I have also lists two other children: Elizabeth christened 13 Dec 1633 and John born abt 1630. Do you know if Elizabeth and John were also children of Francis and William?

My father, George C. Dungan, has a hard bound copy of the Dungan, Clarke genealogy. His grandfather, George Washington Dungan is the last of our immediate family mentioned.
Has the book been updated and if so, is it possible to get copies made?

Thank you for what you are doing with the information in the book "Ancestry of Jeremy Clarke of Rhode Island and Dungan Genealogy,"compiled by Alfred Rudulph Justice.
Our children are blessed with a double direct line back to Rev. Thomas Dungan through Elizabeth Dungan and Sarah Dungan. I am descended from Elizabeth Dungan who married Nathaniel West. Their son Nathaniel West married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown.) Their daughter Mary West married John Jones. He was the son of Margaret Jones, widow, an early Welsh settler in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Martha West, sister to Mary West, married Thomas Jones. They were grandparents of Rev. Joseph Mathias, a minister at the Hilltown Baptist Church, Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. My husband is descended from Sarah Dungan who married James Carrell.

A Response to Mr. Thomas P. Dungan:
Mr. Dungan..Thank you for taking the time to add your thoughts and welcomed insights to the Dungan Guestbook. They are very much appreciated.
Since first going online several years ago I have been attempting to convince others that the Dungans DID NOT descend from the British monarchy. It was an article in THE GENEALOGIST, vol 4. No. 2, Fall 1983, pg 187-202, that first enlightened me as to the error in the Justice work. The article was entitled, Correcting the Ancestry of William Dungan, Perfumer of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London. You were the author.
One of my goals in presenting the Justice work online is to shed light on its errors. You will note, if you return to the site, that I intentionally did not include most of the pages from the Justice work which deal specifically with the "royal connection". Please note also, that at the bottom of the following page:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mylines/dungan108_09.htm
there is a footnote stating my disagreement with the parentage of William Dungan as outlined by Justice. Again, that footnote is based on your work.
It was because of my knowledge of your work that I telephoned you several months ago seeking permission to quote from your work in order to share your research with others and hopefully slow the spread of the errors contained in the Justice work. You were gracious enough to grant permission - with due credit of course - however I have not yet been able to place what information I have of yours, online.
While I certainly do not consider myself a researcher on par with your talents - I say that respectfully - I can assure you that I am a seeker of truth and I am likewise pained when I see references to non-existent ancestors. I have no interest whatsoever in pursuing a genealogical line from which I do not descend. In terms of status, I am quite content to descend from the likes of Francis Latham Dungan. Oh, to have known her!
Concerning the site I feel it is important to leave as much of the Justice error online as is currently posted, in order for those that visit the site to become aware that this error exists. However, if the work currently posted is footnoted using the corrections to the ancestry of William Dungan that your research has uncovered, I believe it would have the affect we both desire.
Sincerely....Michael Johnstone

After many years of trying to eradicate Mr. Justice's errors it pains me to see them repeated by web site like this one. Thomas Dongan "of Lincoln's Inn" was NOT the father of William Dungan the perfumer! This is just one on many mistake in the old "Clarke and Dungan genealogy." See my booklet "A Quest for origins," or "John Dongan of Dublin, an Elizabethan gentleman." If you agree to make corrections, I will send these books to you without any cost to you.
