Her line is straight Gibson/Gipson all the way to her and
I volunteered to help.
Going on a theory that George McGipson was on a plantation in Virginia or another southern state and the owners were Gipson Flournoy. They lived in several southern states and had a number of slaves. My frined Mary is mixed with
cherokee, black,Mulengeon and white. The inventory lists
more information and the source was Library of Virginia.
We could use help.

Hi!
I am currently trying to find a relative who in all the census data is labeled Black, but whose personal family belies that fact. Family stories handed down indicate that he was a Choctaw from Alabama named Abner Williams who married a "mixed" Black and Native American woman named Annie. They were the parents of my great grandfather, who dwelled pretty much all over southern coastal mississippi from NOLA to Florida. I am new to this, so any pointers would be extremely appreciated!

What I want to know is why I cannot find some of my relatives. I know that my Sweat family is to be Native American and were on the Gioun Miller rolls as rejected and they said that in 1907 I believe that there was some people making some depositions against others so they would not be accepted as Native. I guess some people in those days were lying to get money so if someone made a claim you were not Native then that is it even if people know that fact to be true. I know someone told the roll taker that one of them was a slave from St. Clair Alabama. They said they were from Turkeytown Al and had a chief. They are all decendants from Gilbert Sweat married to Rebecca Yarboro they are from ALabama and then moved to Georgia.
Now I am also searching for Information on Charlie Ward who is the son of Sam Ward and Emma Mortis born in White Country Georgia 1975 can only find a death certificate on him and even his own children know nothing of him. They said he was a miner and live in Dahlonega Georgia with his Native American family until he married Dollie Burgess then he moved all over minning claiming to be white and then settling back in Dahlonega where he is burried. I cannot find no trace of Sam Ward and did find a Emma Mortis 1880 Dahlonega but she falls off the face of the earth at that point. Some old woman in Dahlonega told my cousin in 1930 that Charlie Ward was not a Ward but went away as a Mortis came back as a Ward but it was the same man. I was told he was mixed White/Black/Native American. I am lost if you have any ideas how to find the mixed races, mixed cultures, or for that matter those who want to hide their background please help

I was recently attacked with a vengence on Native American "Indian" Tribal Chat board, when I stated that I am Tecumseh`s 4 Gr. Granddaughter. I need to build my defense. I am present holder of our Algonkian Nation Shawnee Tribe Kispoko Sept`s Ancient Sacred Stonehead Warclub, that was handed down through my ancestors. My dad, Okey Cross was Tecumseh`s Gr.Gr.Gr. Grandson, & his oldest sister Olive Cross (who was married to Neil Cox) was "holder", before that her mom was "holder" My Grandma, Zania Belle Barker who was married to her schoolteacher in Wetzel Co. W. Va., William "Wes"ley Cross, she was Tecumseh`s Gr. Gr. Granddaughter. My Grandma`s dress is in glass case at the Museum at Sugarloaf Mountain in (Challagothe)Chiliocothe, Ohio, where they put on the outdoor drama of Tecumseh`s life. My Gr. Grandma was Mary Ann Edgell/Barker (who was married to David Barker & his mom was Mary Ice)she was "holder", Mary Ann Edgell`s parents were Elias Edgell & Matilda Trader/Edgell.
Tecumseh`s mom was Marguerite "Mary" Ice, that was kidnapped at age 3,& was adopted by Cherokee Chief in Penna. & later kidnapped in a raid when the Shawnee tribe was retaliating for the death of a shawnee Chief caused by the Cherokee. She was adopted by a Shawnee Turtle Sept leader. Marguerite "Mary" Ice was renamed Methotasa, which means "Turtle Laying Her Eggs In The Sand". The following spring after courting her captor Chief Pucksinwah over the year, she slipped her handkerchief into her suitors hand. This was Chief Pukeshinwah =Hardstriker, who was the Chief of the Kispokotha Sept of our Shawnee Tribe.
Tecumseh was presented the Ancient Sacred Stonehead Warclub in 1791, from our Shawnees Ancient Sacred Warbundles. Our Kispokotha Sept were in charge of training of the Warriors. When Tecumseh was killed in the War of 1812, on October 5th, 1813, Ottawa Chief Noonday retrieved Tecumseh`s one feathered hat & the Ancient Sacred Stonehead Warclub. He presented it to Tecumseh`s family, and so the stone was passed down, with the lore over the past 7 generations. My Uncle Neil was holder after his wife my Aunt Olive Cross/Cox died in the 1918 flu epedemic. He passed the Ancient Sacred Stonehead in the mid 1900`s to his namesake Grandson, my second cousin Neil Rogers who`s mother Genevive(my first cousin, daughter of Aunt Olive & Uncle Neil Cox. Genevive Cox had married Elmo Rodgers, & Neil was her eldest son. In 1991, exactly 200 years after 4 Gr. Grandpa Tecumseh was presented as Holder of our Algonkian Nation Shawnee Tribe Kispokotha Sept`s Ancient Sacred Stonehead Peacepipe / Warclub. In 1991, my second cousin Neil Rodgers persented me with rhe Ancient Sacred Warclub. Neil Rodgers selected me as he was aware of my lifelong "Vision Quest", and said that he knew of my passion for our Shawnees and lifeling interest in persuing my research.
If there is anything that you can help me to validate my "Stand" and to help our branch of Shawnee Kispokotha to be vindicated, I`m sure that Tecumseh would be proudly smiling down through the circle of life. Tecumseh`s people are a Noble Tribe, and worthy of being acknowledged.
May the Son cause his light to shine upon you, and may your quiver be blessed. Sincerely, Mary F. Cross

Both Bell and Julia are widowed (W'd); Bell was marr'd at 19 yrs old and Julia marr'd at 15 yrs old.
The "m30" for Paul and "m27" for Henrietta, are their ages when each first married.
(Their fathers and mothers were also born in Virginia.)
In 1930, Paul and Henrietta have been married about 5 years, Henrietta being married at 27 yrs old. Grant and Swanee would then be the children of Paul and Henrietta - the older children's mother is Joanna, per the 1920 census.

Julia was a HARRIS! There are Harris's in that general area of southern Virginia who are Indian.
Between the 1880s and 1920s especially, anyone not obviously 'white' usually was listed as 'black' or 'negro' on census records, particularly in the south - census takers weren't anthropologists - so this is such a very subjective thing that you can't count on it being accurate.
The family states that Paul H Williams was originally a slave belonging to the Carringtons in Charlotte, VA and carried that name until he moved to Clover and worked for a man named Allen Williams, thus the Williams name.
His wife Julia Anne Harris was also a slave of the same Carrington as Paul. She claimed to be Carrington's daughter, refusing to be acknowledged as a Williams prior to marriage. No one remembers the first name of the Carrington that owned the plantation. Through my research I have learned there were many Carringtons in Virginia and am having a hard time figuring out which one it could be.
I see the census recorded Paul H as Black. The family believes that Paul had Irish/Indian blood as well. It was always the explanation for the fair skin, occasional straight hair, green eyes and red hair in the family.
It is said that Julia was part Indian as well. Maybe from the Carrington side? But Blackfoot continues to be mentioned and it is said to come from Julia's side of the family.
Below are additional names of Paul and Julia's children.
Susan - b.1868
Belle - b.1870
Ailis - b.1873
Anne -b.1875
Paul James b. -1881
Allen - b.1884
Florence - b.1887
Walter - b.1891
Census record identification of race is very subjective and therefore "uncertain" at best.
In 1870 Halifax Co., Roanoke Twp, p.659A, Paul H., 21, and Julia Williams, 22, with daughter Susan, 2, lived next door to Rebecca Williams, 19, and the next house was Archer Williams, 31, and wife Cornelia, 25.
Three houses after Archer lived Benjamin Carrington, 65 and wife Lucinda, 55. The census taker's name was J.M. Carrington

I have been researching my grandfather (someone who changed his name from unknown first name, surname ROSS to Arthur Ernest Maiden). He ran away at age 13 and never contacted his family again. He was born around 1874 in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was an engineer on the Panama Canal and I show him bringing over 5 different women, claiming to be married to them all, 2 babies, both male, both named Arthur Maiden (one being my father). I am looking for this other baby... Also recently someone contacted me from Panama and it seems he fathered yet another child there during the building of the canal. He abandoned that woman and the baby. All these women were b/w 16 -19 years old, he was in his 30's. How many other men working on the canal, did this? Was this commen? Did the American Canal Workers father and abandon children all over the country side?

Name: Steven Eugene Miller <Semcontrol@aol.com> Date: 2004-01-01 How did you locate our site?: Surfing Comments:
I am looking for the parents of Dora MILLER born June,1859 somewhere in Georgia. Here is the information I have found on the 1900 census of the Hamilton County, Chattanooga, Tennessee: George MILLER was the deceased husband of Dora MILLER.
Dora MILLER born June, 1859 (head of houshold) 40yrs(widow).
Sofine MILLER born May,1882 (son) 18yrs
Fred MILLER born July, 1889 (son) 10yrs
Eugene MILLER born March, 1892 (son) 8yrs
Mary MILLER born October, 1898 (daughter) 1yr
Daniel WALKER born, 1849 Virginia (boarder) 59yrs
Between 1898 and 1901 Daniel WALKER maried Dora MILLER and they had a daughter born, 1901. and her name is Viola (WALKER) CLAY (Clay being her married name) She was known as Aunt Odie by family members. Dora is believed to be of Cherokee descent. I am also trying to find out if Dora Battle and Dora Miller are the same person. On the 1870 Census of Hamilton County,Tennessee, I see a Dora Battle, age eleven, listed as a domestic servant in the household of John M. Todd. She is listed as Mulatto, and also born in Georgia about 1859. The picture that I have of Dora Miller, shows that she is definitely of mixed blood. Here is the rest of the info that I have on the Todd Family:
1870 Census, Hamilton County, Tennessee:
John M. Todd-age 47;Head of Household
Mary A. Todd-age 43;wife
Edgar G.Todd-age 19;son
Minnie M.Todd-age 6;daughter
Dora Battle-age 11; domestic servant

Have been trying to find my dad's grandmother. His grandfather was Joseph Olney Jennings,1869, (who had twin Wm Thom) and his grandmother was Elizabeth Morton. Joseph was listed as white in 1870 and 1880 census. His father John Jennings is not listed in 1860 census even though as far as I know they were in Charlotte County VA. Could they possibly have been slaves before the war? Only Elizabeth, Beth, Betsy Mortons, Motons in the 1880 census in Charlotte County were black or mulatto. Are there any other records I could check to get further info? I'd greatly appreciate any help as I live at Ft Bliss/El Paso Tx so I cant get back home to check anything. Thanks greatly for any help!!

With all the surnames that I've found, I should be able to find something on my great great grandmother Texanna. The mystery comes in where the actual times she had been married, how many children she had, and how much Cherokee blood was she? I was also told that there are lots of Aikens in AL, that are related to my great great grandfather Robert Aikens. I am more than willing to share what info I have.

I found your site very interesting, and I plan to return. I really enjoyed the on line Book, The House in the Cedars. It should be a movie. I am very interested in Cross-Racial genealogy, because, for those of us who have been in this country for a long time, ALL of our families are cross-racial, if only to a very small extent. Our country's future requires that we deal with it in positive ways.
I hope to see additions to the site in the near future.
Thanks,

On my paternal side, I believe that my Lewises are cross race from NY about 1790-1840. On my maternal side, I believe that a Purvis had a bi-racial child, possibly to a Creek Indian named Bird. This would be post civil-war.
My children and I have hereditary blood anemias (mild) that are predominatly found in mediterranean or northern african lands. We also have Sarcoidosis, Lupus as well as the Thalessemia that leads us to the cross race conclusion. Our family looks and is aculturated "white", but deep hued complexions run on my father's side, to the point where some are asked "What are you". Hope to find some answers. Thank for your site.

Searching my gg g'mother Matilda JOHNSON / JOHNSTON believed born circa: 1859, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA, she was led to believe that she was of FIRST NATION / FRENCH CANADIAN Ancestry, but I have been unable to confirm this, having researched into the various racial combinations, it is quite possible, that she may have been of AFRICAN AMERICAN / INDIAN / FRENCH CANADIAN decsent - MATILDA JOHNSON was some how connected to the RT REV BISHOP HIBBERT BINNEY as he and his wife LADY MARY BINNEY nee BLISS of HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA took a particular interest in her well being, going so far as to act as her "aunt and uncle" at her christening, which she believed took place at ST GEORGE'S ANGLICAN CHURH HALIFAX, the service was conducted by REV UNIACKE of NOVA SCOTIA, and placing her in "foster" care with a family by the name of NEWTON - the NEWTON'S immigrated to the UK circa: 1870, taking MATILDA JOHNSON with them, although MATILDA recalled LADY BINEY requesting that she remain in NOVA SCOTIA with the BINNEY'S -MATILDA not knowing any other family chose to immigrate to the UK, after which time she subsequently married WILLIAM WESTACOTT of DEVON UK and immigrated to AUSTRALIA - so as you can see, I have quite a task ahead, therefore any info or assistance would be greatly appreciated -

I know all biracial children of black and white descent are just black people.Because every black person or african american in this country has mixed backgrounds. I know it is not a issue most blacks want to discuss because they want to believe African-American just means a person is of African descent, but that is not so it was the mixing of other races that made the American part in African Americans. But just because a white person mates with a black person we want to call the child mixed just because the fact that that child is a direct product of a white and black person mating. I know for a fact that you can not tell by looking at an individual skin color, hair type, or ey color and say that person is mixed or black. The product of mixing races may come from things that are not visually seen but by diseases or gene defects. In the case of blacks with mixed background it may not always be in physical looks, skin , eye color or hair, genes. It may be each one of these factors to one or two, three or four, or maybe just one.

I have been at this for a few years, and kept running up against brick walls. The reason was because I made the assumption that my lineage was strictly black. The further I went back the clearer it became that my ancestors on several lines were of mixed race. Some passed, while others acknowledged both sides. In my research, I have made several friends that are in this same boat, or either they are white who know they have black relations, but their families won't acknowledge it. I am dumbfouned that in this day in age people still are not ready to discuss what they know is true. Whatever the reason, I am glad you have provided a website for people of similiar circumstances. Finding my white line means nothing more to me than a way to explain my features, and my children when people come up to me and ask "what are you"? I will be sure a point others in this direction!

Just looking for info on my McGhee ancestors -- got frustrated when I couldn't find anything helpful in TenGen, did a web search for "McGhee cemetary" & found myself here.
Wehn my dad was alive, he did some research & said we had linked up with some Cherokees in Tennessee. I was too y;oung to pay attention or give him much credit, but looking back I realize he may have been correct. If he had found any evidence of a Black connection, he wouldn't have mentioned it.
I'd just like to know more about my people, whoever they are. I have sketchy information going back to James William McGee (1841-1867), born near CarthageTN, died near Cotton Plant AK. He married Lucinda Smith (from TN; b 1846 she died in AK 1866). They had two sons, Wm Monroe & James Marion. William, my ancestor, added the 'h' to McGhee -- although the story was that the 'h' had been in the name originally, someone dropped it to differentiate himself from his kin, and Wm put it back, although James remained 'McGee'. My grandfather Virgil kept the 'h', but his brother Cecil dropped it.
I'd really like to learn about Lucinda Smith McGee. Who were her people?
I know you're a 'links' site, not an 'answer' site, but who knows? You may be my cousin, or the info I'm seeking may have just crossed your desk.
Anyway, thanks! E

I posted once before re: MOORE/HAWKINS/WILSON
I have new informtion from a death certificate on my paternal Grandfather Clarence HAWKINS:
Born June 1920 Georgia
Died 28 Aug. 1946 age 25, Atlanta, Fulton County
Father: Will HAWKINS born Georgia
Mother: Minnie MORRISON born Georgia
Vet: WWII
Length of time in Community: 16 years
Single "colored" Male
Informant: Willie Mor/Mar SCOTT (hand written)
All I know is that Clarence is both African American and Cherokee or possibly Creek descent, though from which parent the African or Native blood comes, it is not clear, possibly both are of mixed descent. Clarence worked as a "special delivery carrier" by means of motorcycle, which eventually was the cause of death in the city of Atlanta. I am also trying to find the connection between the Informant Willie Mor/Mar SCOTT and Clarence. Cant understand why the informant was not Vera MOORE mother of his children...(he only died 7 months after my dad was born). Also want to locate the family on the 1920 census, but have no county prior to the move to Atlanta in 1930.
Any help appreciated.

At the time of the 1900 census, the children still at home were Arthur (1890, David (1890), maggie (1896) and Minnie

BUt as time goes by and i cant find him. I am beginning to wonder if he was truly from al..
Just as the article "Fading to White" mentioned I too had relatives that had/had a secret.
Part of it was the personality of a gggrand father. He was mean. But the ethnic background of his wife my gggrandmother i question. They say she was half indian. Yet i cant find her father anywhere. Personally- we have a yellow color, not a bronze color- tan easily. And even though i have blue eyes and had (Blonde hair) when i was younger. Other kids did ask "What are you?" Still ask :Do you go to a tanning bed?" I dont except if i want a dark tan. But you get the message i am sending. I have a suspcition i will be enlightened at the end of this trail..

My 2nd great grandfather, John Henry Tharp, born in 1830, probably in Ohio, possibly Illinois, has been the object of my recent research for the book I am writing on our surname history in this country. John Henry's father Solomon Tharp was born in Preble, Ohio, 1808, and his wife was probalbly Native American. Things like that were not viewed the same way as they are today. John Henry was probably raised by his Aunt Elizabeth in Virginia (Hampshire). Solomon died in 1854 in New Orleans. By all family accounts he was a bit of a rogue. John Henry rarely spoke of his father, but told everyone his father came from England and settled in New Jersey. Research has proven otherwise. Can you add anything?

The Miles family claims Cherokee descent. In 1907, several of the children of John Miles applied to the Cherokee fund. All applications were rejected. The one application I have still not found is that of Samuel Miles, all others state rejection reason as "sister, or brother to Samuel Miles", so that particular one is needed. John Miles was supposed to be 100% Cherokee and married a 100% Spanish woman by the name of Nancy Jane Shubert on April 3, 1852 in Roane County, Tennessee. Family legend says his sister (name unknown) married the Cherokee Chief Riley. Anyone familiar with this line, please email me!

Thanks for tackling this. It is the great American story that is so ignored. Our mixtures should be celebrated! I lived for many years in Latin America
where the majority of the populations correctly classify themselves as mixed race. In fact, instead of Columbus Day, Day of the Race is celebrated, which means the arrival of Columbus sparked the mixing of three races. It is hard for persons outside of the U.S. to believe that the many parts of the U.S. had outlawed what was called "miscegenation".

There are vague suggestions of some Native American ancestors back in the late 1600s or early 1700s, but none confirmed. Also some of my cousins have known Native American ancestry, but haven't been able to get very far in finding records.
I also consider it likely that I will have descendants with mixed heritage and would like to encourage research that would make it easier for them to find all their roots, should they be so inclined.

Hi,
I am intrigued by your site. I saw the post on our list; Appalachian Family, and followed the link. I could not stop reading the article on "Fading to White". My ancestors, the Collins and Bowling clans, carried quite pecuilar race designations on the census records. My gg grandparents were listed as "mulatto" or white. Their parents were listed as "FPC" meaning "free persons of color" or "white". There is a great deal of research being done on these people, and many scholars attribute their dark skin and blue eyes to an exotic "Mediterannean" heritage. Some believe they are simply "Tri-Racial", and yet others believe Native American. I, myself, am not convinced in either direction, until I find the actual truth. My ancestors did not leave an easy trail to follow, but I am trying to follow their footsteps.. and hopefully someday uncover a record that will tell me my true heritage.
Keep up the good work, I will return to your site.
