I am trying to find out if my father is one of the last surviving direct descendants of this war. His father (born 1881) served at a very young age. Subsequently, he was 55 when my father was born in 1935. The math suggests that this may be the case.

I'm looking for record/s of a soldier ... A. D. McClure.
As best I can put it together, he probably served in the 4th Illinois Volunteer Infantry - around 1898.
I grew up in central Illinois ... my father died at 97 years, a couple of years ago. Consequently, I inherited a military rifle from that era. My father received the rifle from a widow lady (name not known) who also lived in central Illinois
Under the but rifle plate is the name A. D. McClure, indicating he was an enlisted man. The rifle is marked Company A5. A man in Nevada puts this rifle as a 98% chance it was issued to the 4th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
I have an uncle, through marrage, with the name of McClure. Relative ... likely or unlikely, I don't know. I'm simply interested in tracing this man A. D. McClure to any possible living relative/s today.
So far I've had leads, but have not much success.
If you have suggestions of how I may locate military records of the Company A, 4th Illinois Vol. Infantry, I'd be thankful to you all for your help.
Have a great day and may God bless. Please pray for our men and women in service to our country ... where ever they serve.

My Grandfather, Francis Marion "Frank" McArty served in Troop A, 1st US Calvary "Rough Riders" and wrote articles about his experiences for several newspapers in 1898 and later. He mustered in while working on a ranch in Flagstaff, AZ and returned home after mustering out to Champaign County, IL where he is buried. Wish that county had such a web site as you have, looks like you've spent lots of hours on it.

I have gathered several photos and other information concerning the service of my grandfather, Arthur Webb Platt, the the Philippine Islands. He served from Nov 1900 to Mar 1903, enlisting at Chicago, IL, in the "18 Regiment of Inf." In Jan 1901 he was assigned to "Co. D 20th Inf. Manila, P.I." My grandfather's brother, Walter D. Platt, enlisted at the same time, but I am not sure if they remained together or not. Of interest, one photo I have includes the same chair that is in your photo of William H. Ward.

Am trying to locate info on an ancestor whose grave marker is engraved with his info on serving in this war but he is not listed anywhere. I would like to give him his due respect and add him to the correct roster. He was from NYS. His headstone has the circle and cross logo with Cuba, P.I., USA, and time has obliterated the fourth set of letters, but it also reads: Co. A. II INF. U.S.W.V.

Name: Nancy Nikodem Ballard <grancy@ptd.net> Date: 2005-11-11 Did you find this site informative and useful? yes Did you have an ancestor who served in the Spanish yes Comments:
My Great Uncle, John J. Nikodem fought in the SAWar. He contracted Typhoid fever and was left behind to recouperate, but died September 15, 1898(we believe in Cuba?). Following the Spanish Surrender, his regiment left on the Steamer, "The Panama", which had been taken from the Spaniards during the war. On November 2, 1898, in route to the docks in USA, the transport ship was feared lost. The 320 passengers were mostly soldiers and only a few civilians aboard, including P.H. Kehoe who left Chicago the month before to bring back the body of John J. Nikodem to Chicago for burrial. The ship should have been in Cape Maysi and was declarred by a Fishing Schooner as lost due to the identifying marks of debris found at the cape. I have news paper articles to document these facts. John J. Nikodem was born and raised in the West Side of Chicago and attended public schools and was the son of George Burkhart and Mary Ann (Philbin) Nikodem. He was a good student, and a popular young man in Chicago Society circles. He became the day Clerk at the Revere House Hotel, located on Clark and Michigan Streets, owned by his Uncle John Philbin. John Nikodem attended many functions of Chicago Socialities. He volunteered for the infantry and was Mustered out November 11, 1888 for Santiago. He was a PFC in "K" Company-First Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was well liked by his regiment and the officers, and while in Santiago he was promoted to Coropral. He was originally buried in St. Adalbert Cemetery near his Grandfather, but later (abt 1906)was moved to the family plot in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Chicago He was the first of nine children to be deceased. I am a Great Grand Niece John was never married.
