As a member of the Upper Eden History society, I am involved in preparing a book on the history of Brough. I would be very interested if you could give me details of the Coulthard family who left Brough in the second half of the 19th century, who went either to Durham county, [especially to Shildon and the railway works ] or who emigrated abroad. All your research will be acknowledged. Thanks Margaret

Hi, I see we have a connection via the Browning family in Stogursey. Silas Browning and Tacey Fish had Robert 1780.
Robt's 1st marriage produced William 1805. Wm moved to N Petherton and married there in 1827. He is 3X greatgranddad to me.
Have you been successful at taking the Fish line back into Taunton? Or have a clue abt Mary Conibar's origin? I have only same info as you, taken from Stogursey parish records. Barb

Hi Dawn,
Once again I find myself browsing your excellent website, one I have used many times while researching my (our) family tree.
As you know I am the grandson of James Coulthard (b Shildon 1856 - d Newcastle-upon-Tyne 1935)and Elizabeth (Robson) Coulthard. James was the brother of your G/grandfather, Christopher Coulthard.
My own attempts at genealogy, using half a dozen surnames, are vastly overshadowed by thousands you have researched. When is the book coming out?
Best Wishes ,
Mick.

I am a Wells/Welles descendant, and family history claims that we were Huguenots, with name of deVaux or similar who went to England. Can you help me determine if this rumor may have some truth? Our immigrant ancestors from England to America were from Evesham, England: Hugh/Thomas Wells (b. 1590) who married Frances Albright (1600-1678). Hello. I notice you are researching Alfred Compigne b 1818, and Walter Compigne b 1841.

I can advise that Alfred settled in Australia, married my gg-grandfather’s sister, and died there in 1909.

Descendants of Alfred William Compigne

1 Alfred William Compigne b: 3 January 1818 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England d: 4 July 1909 in Richmond Villa, Turbot St, Brisbane
.. +Jessie Lambert Collins b: 18 January 1836 in Sydney, Australia d: 25 June 1911 in Turbot St, Brisbane Burial: Toowong m: May 1853 in Telemon, Queensland Father: Thomas Collins Mother: Sophia Pamela Danvers
... 2 dau Compigne b: Bef. 1873
... 2 son Compigne b: Bef. 1873
... 2 Emily Marie Compigne b: Abt. 1873 d: Abt. 1957
....... +George Henry Irvine b: 28 November 1863 in Lanark County, Scotland Father: John Robinson Irvine Mother: Robina Mollison

Only Emily survived, and she had no children, so the name ended with her in that line.

I can also advise that Walter was a nephew of Alfred and also settled in Australia. I do not know who was Walter’s father or whether he too settled in Australia.

My interest is somewhat peripheral to my work on my main tree and so I am not particularly researching them apart from establishing who they were and their direct history in my family history. However I am happy to share what I do know if you are interested.

I spent three years at HMS Collingwood in the 1960s, just outside Fareham, and hence knew Gosport well [ferry to Portsmouth and train to London] and Alverstoke a little. So I do have a little more curiosity about the Compignes than I do for others similarly related to my family.

I was very interested to view your extensive genealogical connections: most impressive. I am interested in my family background, particularly the Cookes as my great aunt left me a family bible with a few notes in it.

My father was William Cooke Bell (b1904 - d 1966): his mother was Ada Cooke (1874-1917) probably one of the early victims of the "Spanish flu" which hit everyone especially from 1918 onwards: she, Ada, was the youngest child of William Cooke (a tailor, I believe) and Hannah Cooke (nee Brown): Hannah, I understand from your site, was the daughter of Gill Brown and Jane Brown (nee Cooke) from Shildon: Jane's father was Robert Cooke (married to Barbara Carter): and Robert Cooke b1765 was the son of James Cooke b 1719.

Reading through the "Orange" website I can recognise Montier and Barbut as families with which my family intermarried in the early 1700's. It seems probable/possible therefore that they may have travelled together. We have exactly the same problem in researching the previous generation (in reply to the question about Ann Montier) in that the family name Feline, appears about 1695 in London and we have no knowledge of how they got there or where from. Does anybody have any advice or information about how to go about tracing the link back to France?

Hi Your family records fascinating. I am struggling with my Grandfather who was 'taken in' by a husband and wife and subsequently took on the full name of the 'adoptive' father. He first appears in the 1891 census as 'adopted son' of William John Poole aged 5 living at 1A St. Anns Cottages, Edmonton. They had no other children and stayed in the Edmonton area all his life. Have assumed he must have been illigitimate. Just wondered if you had any ideas to help in my search? I know there were no adoption records kept at that time and I don't suppose there's the slightest possibility that your Jessie had a slight indescretion about 1885/6 ?! I just hate hitting a dead end with this.

Hello,

My wife and I have just startedg family history research, and looking at several names: Smither, Hartland, Goodman and Dowling, and Cheshire, Hollis, Baigent and Lockyer. I have successfully gleaned some additional facts about Baigent today, especially months of birth, but we have Edward Baigent (born 1813,married to Mary Ann Hern) as having 12 children - devious IGI tracings.

It would be good to touch base - we are just getting into the New Zealand connection.

I am descended from John Orange, born c 1765 in W Yorkshire. He married Grace Chapel born c 1765 on 10 June 1788 in Horbury Chapel Wakefield. She died in Silcoates, Alverthorpe, Wakefield 5 June 1856. They had at least 10 children of which David, according to the 1851 census of Leicester, was a worsted manufacturer employing 89 hands. He was born 8 Oct 1881in Ossett, Dewsbury, near Wakefield and baptised in the Ossett Green Congregational Church. His three sons came to New Zealand in 1861 and I am a descendant of one of them. I believe but cannot prove that John's parents were Levi Orrage b 1732, married Ann Armstead 1759, died 1768. If you can tie any of the above in to your research, I have a comprehensive tree of the Leicester and the New Zealand families. I note you have listed a Matilda Orange dying 1988 in New Zealand. I have extracted all the NZ births, deaths & marriages recorded in the official records and Matilda is not there, so she must have been married. Do you have her married name? I am greatly impressed with the research you have obviously done to produces such a comprehensive website.

We are wondering if the De Ville surname is connected
somehow to the Orange surname? My cousin lives in England
and is the last living relative that is still in the U.K.
He spells his surname with a small "d". I have always
known ours to be used with a capital "D".
It is very interesting researching family history.

Hello:

I am trying to connect my Clark line to the England Line. My grandfather Albert was born in Canada Spring Hill Nova Scotia. His father Harry Clark was born in Pratts Bottom, Chelsfield, Kent County England on 1 April 1878 and came to Canada (don't know the name of the ship...still searching) in 1901. Married Ellen Gillespie born 12 June 1882 in Plumstead England in Westmoreland county, New Brunswick, Canada on 18 November 1905 (don't know when she came over or on what ship. It sounds like they knew each other before coming to Canada. The only thing that I have confirmed documentation for is the marriage.

Harry's parents are William Clark (b.1844?) Cedham, Kent County England and Elizabeth Turner (b. 1849?) Keston, Kent County England, according to the Census. (also confirmed. William disappears off the census in 1901, I assume he died.

James William Clark (b.November 1906), Harry's son, spent some time with his aunt in Pratts Bottom during the war(unconfirmed)

Would love any help, my father is 70 now and knows little about his family. It would be great to pass on some information before he passes.

Thanks, Kim

Looking for information on William Richard Clark born in Ireland about 1743 and married Mary Elizabeth Rogers. They have a son Henry Alexander Clark born about 1763 in Newry, Ireland. He married Amelia Stafford.

William and Mary came to America possibly around 1773. Don't know of any other children at this time.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

I am back again with some questions. The FEAR Reseach Group looked into the line some time ago, and it proved very difficult. We can take George William FEAR (b 1843) and Arthur Robinson/FEAR (b1856) back on their mothers side and presume they had different fathers. We assume that the former's father was William FEAR who was a private in the 77th (East Middx)Regiment of Foot, but have not proved this. We can find nothing about the latter's father except that his surname was Robinson.

Do you have any further information? Do you have the details from either's birth certificate or from their mothers second mariage, which would sort things out?

Hi Dawn,
I have just read you Cooke family Tree, its fantastic!
I am researching my GGG Grandmother Elizabeth Cooke, who married William Elsdon. Elizabeth is buried at St Helen's Kelloe, Durham. Also in the family grave is her sister - in - law Susannah Cooke who died July 20th 1855 aged 73 years wife of William Cooke who died. The only census i can match with William & Susannah are the 1841 census at Durham Merrington & 1851 Durham Cornforth, at Cornforth Mill. The 1851 census gives William Cooke's birth place as STARTFORTH, Yorkshire. Is it possible this family of Cooke's could be related to yours? Would love to share information about my relatives with you.
Kind Regards
Moira Spore.

Dear Dawn,

I've been researching the Newton's from Hawarden 18th century for my friend Ann McMeikan nee Newton. It looks as if they trace back to James Newton and Alice Whitley m ca 1748.

Ann's father was James Welsby Newton b Manchester, her grandfather was Cecil Newton b Buckley, her gt grandfather was James Newton b 1847 a colliery manager at Parr Colliery. Her gt gt gf was Joseph b 1823. her gt gt gt grandfather was Thomas Newton son of Isaac Newton and Susannah Davison chr 28/12/1794. etc.

I am sure Ann would be interested to hear from you. She heard they were related to Isaac Newton and so they were but not in the way expected !

How thrilled I was to find your Orange web site! There is so much information that corroborates what I have already painstakingly discovered, and so very much more in addition. I fear it will take me a long time to digest it all.

I am the great great grandson of William Frederic Orange (b. 1796), son of Jean Baptiste and Martha Fox. William emmigrated to this country in 1820 on the ship Tontine, along with his brother Benjamin. The two brothers joined their brother Daniel Orange in Albion, Edwards County, Illinois (Daniel had come over earlier). William married Barbara Tait in 1824. In 1830, all three families moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, although Daniel, a grocer, later moved back to Illinois, where he was a farmer and Baptist clergyman. William made his fortune in Cincinnati as an upholsterer and outfitter of steam boats, and was a respected horticulturist as well. Benjamin worked with William for a while, and was also a broker.

I have only recently become engrossed in my family genealogy, and am still in the arduous process of acquiring data and filling in the tree. My brother David is the family archivist and historian, and has amassed a large collection of photos, letters, deeds, and other fascinating documents relating to the Cincinnati Oranges. He is currently working on a biography of William F. Orange.

Since I have not yet had time to look through all of your data, I'm not sure what you have on the American descendants of the three Orange brothers. So I thought I would start by sharing with you what I have collected so far, fragmentary as it might be. See the attached outlines (in PDF). [THESE WERE SENT LAST WEEK BY SEPARATE EMAIL] I also have a fair amount of information about my great great grandmother, Barbara Tait, from Northumberland.

Again, I am enormously impressed by the information provided by your site, and the work you have done to collect it all. Thank you.

Mary Peters married James Allison Hogg (b.1870 Whithorn, Wigton, Scotland). Date of marriage 1889 in Westminster, London. He was then a Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards. Their children were Ernest George William b.1888 Epsom, Joseph 1891 Lambeth, Mary May 1893 Lewisham, James Allison 1896 Glasgow (my father), Robert C. 1898 New York, Lillian 1901 New York.
I dont have full access to US records, but thanks to another contact they have been located in the 1900 and 1910 US Census, living in Manhattan (James Snr. was then a Pest Exterminator). I have no idea if there are any living descendants apart from my own immediate family. As far as I know both Ernest and his sister Mary May died fairly young, possibly in their 20's, and did not marry.

The Scots line so far goes back to 1780's mainly in Edinburgh area. My Gt Grandfather James Allison Hogg b.1838 married twice. His first wife Isabella Banks, born Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1837, was the daughter of a Baptist Minister from Banff. James and Isabella had a daughter Isabella who married an Italian and had five children, eventually settling in Cardiff, Wales.

His second wife Mary Chesney Jibb (my Gt Grandmother)was born in Cumberland 1842 (father Joseph born in Lincolnshire.)
