Hi, I'm Carole, and I'm researching the Briggs family for my friend James Briggs, (born Leeds 1932) He is the son of William Briggs, (!890) and the grandson of Thomas Briggs born Leeds 1864, and Catherine nee Duffy. His third great grandparents were Joshua Briggs and Obediance Bentley, so I guess that means he is related to you!! We both live in Plymouth, and he would be interested in hearing from you. I came to your page via a link at Ancestry.com on the Stainsby message board. You have done a wonderful job. I have also been researching since the 1970's and laughed when I read how your ancestors came from Darlington in the 1700's and then their paths met up again 200 years later. I am from the U.S. originaly and my husband is Canadian, both our family lines lead back to England/Scotland. When I was going through your connected family names both, my GRIEVE(s) and my husband's STAINSBY names were listed under your TATE line. Although none of your lines seem to be directly connected to our families, I will keep your address handy if I do find anything. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jenny,
just found your family tree which was very interesting to me as my maiden name is Hopton. I am also doing my family history or i should say trying to! What interested me most was the Hopton/Briggs connection. I am trying to go back from Joseph Hopton who was christened 1816 Stapleton Bristol. Joseph's father was Robert Briggs and his mother was Elizabeth Hopton. I realise Bristol is along way from Yorkshire but you never know. Reall enjoyed yur tree.

Hi,
I am descended from SMITH, LLOYD, BUTTREY, WAINWRIGHT,
HUDSON, and I don't know who all but from the Bramley,
Rothwell, West Yorkshire and possibly Worcester (LLOYDS) area of England on my Father's family side.
On my mother's side its THURSTON, VOUT, WALPOLE SMITH from
Norfolk England.
I have emailed Pam Buttrey numerous times and sent her a picture of my grandparents along with my Dad as a baby and his older brother before they came to Canada.
She sent me the pictures of the gathering and it was so nice to look at people so far away who are connected along the line.
Such a lot of fun this genealogy stuff.
PS also searching for John and Jane Cullen nee Hamilton,
looks like they were from Scotland and I thought they were from Ireland.
Email me if you wish,

Hi Jenny --
Lovely site...sent you an email re: Cliff relations from Leeds, Wortley, Blythe. My grandfather, Albert Jefferson Cliff was born in 1885. (My mother was born when he was 47, believe it or not) His father, James Elliot Cliff came from Leeds, England with his wife Mary Ann (dau of John & Eliz (?)Elliot) from Blythe, Northumberland. James' mother was Mary Cliff (dau of John & Sarah Garrett) who was from Wortley, Yorkshire. I believe they emmigrated to the states approx. 1830-40. but I have tons of pictures, similiar to the ones you have. Isnt it a shame that they didnt write the identities on the backs of the pictures!!
James' father, was also a James (married to Mary Garrett from Wortley) and his father was Alfred. I believe Alfred died and was buried in England as well as the older James as there is really no record of them ever having been here as of yet.
Among my gr. grandfather's, James Elliot Cliff, siblings were Thomas, Edward, Lily, Violet, Rose and Minnie Camelia. All were born in England but Minnie.
Any one who may have a connection, please feel free to drop me an email. Thank you!, Doreen

Dear Jenny + any one else who may be able to help,
My dad is trying to find out about his great grandfather, Godfrey Van Dyke Tate, who could have been associated with the Isle of Man, Barrow in Furness, Accrington, Church, Coventry, or Oswaldtwistle. We don't have any dates.
If any one has any info about Tate families with origins in these vicinities, could you please contact me. G. Tate apparently had several brothers (who were never in contact) so there are bound to be other lineages of Tates around. Our Tate lineage ends with me (my dad was the only son of Alec Tate, and I, as his daughter am his only child).
Thanks so much.

Hi Jenny
Your web page is great. Thanks for your quick response. There may still be a connection. My cousin Laurie married Margaret Horsfall Briggs during the war, she was also a cousin as her grandmother and my grandmother were sisters. Margaret's great grandfather was Joseph Briggs and was married to Sarah?? Their son was Cowell Briggs who was the grandfather of Margaret. A place mentioned is Idle, Yorkshire. We may still be related however remotely. I hope this may be of some help.

Name: Jonathan Barker <jonathan@far-sight.co.uk> Date: 2001-10-09 Where in the world are you ? London & Kent Comments:
Great informative web-site for Cowling-hunters!
Our Yorkshire Cowlings came from Leeds and I remember my grand-mother referring to Pately Bridge origins and relatives. We have unidentified (she told me who was who but I was only ten then!) Cowlings in C19 and early C20 photos, mostly from studios in Leeds and Harrogate, but I cannot work out the precise link to the trees produced by others descending from C18 Pately Bridge ancestors: several of those sons married and could have produced our line, the more recent layers of which include the following I know of:
Generation 1:
Clarence Edward COWLING
m Mary Hannah ?, Jan 1886, Farnley, W. Yorks (She later married a Mr. Simmonds after CEC’s death)
d 20 Feb 1906
Generation 2
Their children were:
1. Constance Adelaide (Connie) COWLING
b 25 Aug 1886
d 2 Mar 1903
2. Sybil COWLING
b 19 Jul 1888
d 26 Jan 1893
3. Catherine Mildred (Kitty) COWLING
b 5 Dec 1893
m Reginald Thorpe BARKER
16 Jul 1917, Ranmoor, Sheffield
d Tunbridge Wells 1 May 1974
4. Louise (Louie) COWLING
b. 3 Jan 1896
m Russell Green
12 Feb 1917
(moved to Queensland, Australia)
5. Rupert Spencer COWLING
b. 26 Oct 1899
m twice, 2nd wife = Mary
d. Jan 1980, Kippax, Leeds
Generation 3 includes...
Child of Catherine Cowling & Reg T Barker:
Robert Oscar (Bob) BARKER
b. 26 Oct 1918, Sheffield
m Rosamunde Mary Rampton
20 Jan 1950, Wooton, Surrey
Child of Rupert & ? COWLING:
John Cowling
m Myra ?
Generation 4 includes...
Children of Robert Barker & Rosamunde:
Jonathan Michael BARKER (b 1950)
Paul Jeremy BARKER (b 1953)
Robin William (b 1957)
Children of John Cowling & Myra:
David A COWLING
Robin E Cowling
Generation 5 includes...
Children of Jonathan BARKER & Judith RAMSEY:
Jessie BARKER (b 1978)
Hannah BARKER (b1980)
Children of Robin BARKER & June UNDERWOOD:
Daniel BARKER (b. 1993)
Jamie BARKER (b. 1995)
Joanna BARKER (b 1997)
I assume that Clarence Edward was born in the early 1860s so he could have been a son or grandson of several of the men featured in the Pately Bridge line. Unfortunately our records are purely photographic and I do not yet know the names of CEC’s parents. He also had a ? younger brother (??) David (presumably born around 1870), who was chaplain to the English church in Munich in 1911 at which time the latter’s ? daughter Margery was confirmed (27 May 1911); she was presumably born around 1898.
I would be very interested in further info that could help to link with David’s descendants or with Clarence Edward’s (and David’s) parentage.

Your Skeen family doesn't appear at first look to be MY SkeenFamily. BUT your Skeens were from Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. That is the town where my grandmother Mary Ann Currie lived prior to her emigration to USA. She didn't think much of my Skeen family and I am sure she is twirling in her grave because the Skeen clan is higher up on the clan register than her Currie clan is. How about that. I loved her but...
anyway, jsut owndering if you have any insight into searching for folks in Newcastle UponTyne. I have been so preoccupied with SKeen family that I have not been able ot get "into" her tree.
Any help or info you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I liked your site, but not close enough to my Skeens. They go back toAberdeen area and Skeen Castle. Do you belong to the Skeen research group? I have communicated with the newly elected Chief who was finally able to document his lineage so he is in right the true Chief.
