I am looking for any info on the ethnic ancestry of John Henry who married Elizabeth Imel in Somerset Co,PA in 1809.I have conflicting reports that claim that John Henry was of Scotch-Irish ancestry and other info claims that he may have been German and spoke PA Dutch. If anyone can help clear this up please advise. Thank you.

Henry Imel Sr. was my 3rd great grandfather. His daughter Elizabeth Imel married my 2nd great grandfather John Henry. I was wondering if anyone would happen to know what ethnicity John Henry was? Henry Imel Sr. supposedly died in their home in Somerset Co.PA. I am very proud to be a descendant of the Imel family.

I am so glad to finally find this book! I am a descendant of John Immel of Westmoreland County, PA. My family has only had a few copied pages of this book up until now. The pages we had were "lost" in an attic for some time and it has been a source of stress for the family. How ironic that the entire book has been online all this time!
If anyone has any new information about the parents or birthdate of John Immel of Westmoreland County, DOB 1782 please contact me. Thank you!

I'd like to find some more relatives closer in the tree since there isn't many directly linked to us in Texas, if at all...I believe my Great Grandfather Arthur S. Imel moved to Texas from Ohio, or Indiana...We're also closely related to Jack Imel from the Lawrence Welk TV show. I'd love to chat with him since I too am a Well versed Musician. I believe he is still alive living in California.

I'm a descendant of Henry Imel Sr. and Margaret Disher(Dasher)...

Henry Imel Sr. was the oldest of the Prussian Hessian Soldiers (Brothers)contracted by England to quell the American colonies rebellion, which later turned into the American Revolution. The Brothers once here, switched sides and fought for the freedom of the colonies from British Tyranny...

I've seen some errors amongst the guest book entries. Peter was the youngest brother. It was Peter who was the drummer boy at the age of 12, not Joseph. There were 5 brothers, Ages 20, 19, 18, 14, and 12...Henry, Thomas, Jacob, Joseph and Peter... though one(Thomas) died shortly after arriving, and of course Peter being very young at 12 is why this story varies from being 3, 4, or 5 brothers. Another story being passed through the family is that the brothers came under the name Immelman, which of course doesn't stand true, given the wonderful birth and death records that have pieced together the story for us. The original spelling for the Hessian soldiers was in fact Imel.

The father remained in Hesse-Cassel, Germany. His name being Soloman Imel. It is his story I wish to trace back, though Germany did not keep accurate records until families were forced to by Adolf Hitler to prove their lack of Jewish blood. It is those records I'd like to get a hold of. It is said that the Imel line actually traces back to Switzerland, being the real motherland for the Imel family. Originally spelled "Immel". The Immel's and other Switzerland families fleeing in time of the Napoleonic wars and taking refuge in Hesse-Cassel, Germany.

...In case any of you are wondering why I carry an extra "L", it is because of an Army enlistment type-o that occurred when my Great Grandfather Arthur S Imel enlisted before WWII.

Section IV (pages 253-276) is entitled “Descendants of Jacob Imel of Centre County, Pennsylvania. This is my line -- Andrew Imel who married Catherine Schounk and his descendants which I compiled in 65 typed pages and sent to Velma Keller on June 6, 1970 along with 50 pictures, mostly of Solomon Emal and Daniel Emel’s lines. Twenty-two of the fifty pictures appear in the book although they are placed randomly and do not accompany the appropriate family info.

I also sent Velma other research including census records and a list I compiled of Civil War soldiers (spelling variations) – 71 Union soldiers and 12 Confederates. I became quite interested in the Civil War and sent her copies of pension records that I had acquired. I was especially interested in prisoner of war camps since I believed two of my direct line ancestors, Clinton Day and Emanuel Snyder, were imprisoned at the infamous Andersonville prison in Georgia. The other best known prison for Union soldiers was Libby prison in Richmond VA. Therefore, I was very disappointed to see that Velma combined these two prisons into one listing David, Daniel and Samuel (pages 260, 271 and 280) as having been prisoners at “Libby Prison at Andersonville.ö I re-checked all information sent to Velma including the individual pension records on the six brothers of my Solomon Emal who were in the Civil War. Daniel Emel was at Libby prison for about a month. David Emel was at both Libby and Andersonville for a total of 13 months. Libby was used as a transfer point quite a bit so I assume he spent most of a year at Andersonville. I have no reason to believe that Samuel Emmel was a prisoner of war at all. It was interesting to note that of the 35 Civil War Imels (all spellings) that Velma lists in her book, none other than my line were imprisoned!

Another inaccuracy in the book is her note concerning the sons of Andrew and Catherine who were in the Civil War. This should read “William, David, Andrew, Daniel, Samuel and George.ö My Solomon Emal was not in the Civil War although I do have the pension record of the only Solomon Immell who was a soldier. He is on page 45 of her book. The youngest of the eight brothers, Franklin, was not in the war since he was only 10 years old. Three of the six brothers, Andrew, Samuel and David, are buried in the Soldiers Circle of Riverside Cemetery in Troy, Miami County, Ohio.

IMMEL OF LANCASTER COUNTY, PA

I was poking around on the internet a while back and happened upon an Immel family web page. I noticed in particular, Johann Michael Immel, a son of Martin Immel who came from “Wernetzö near Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It occurred to me that the village and church in question might actually be Wörnitz (anglicized Wornitz). I know a little something about Wörnitz, since that is the place that my Moser ancestors came from. In checking my records, I find that I have some information that may be of interest to you. My 6-G grandfather, Adam Moser, lived in Grossulrichshausen, a hamlet within the parish of Wörnitz. He was married three times, and I descend from his son Johann Adam Moser of the second marriage. Adam Moser’s third marriage was to Apollonia Geringer, and they had three children. The birth entries from the churchbooks of Wörnitz for the first two children are as follows:

Churchbooks of Wörnitz, births: 1610-1750, page 320: 22 December 1715, to Apollinia Moser, wife of Adam Moser, farmer in Grossulrichshausen, a son Johannes. Sponsor: Johann Michael Immel, unmarried son of Johann Martin Immel, farmer and juryman in Grossulrichshausen.

Churchbooks of Wörnitz, births: 1610-1750, page 325: 3 March 1717, to Apollinia Moser, wife of Adam farmer in Grossulrichshausen, a daughter Anna Margaretha. Sponsor: Anna Margaretha Immel, wife of the honorable Johann Martin Immel, farmer and juryman in Grossulrichshausen.

I suspect that the family records of the Martin Immel family are all to be found in the churchbooks of Wörnitz, so I thought I would pass this along. I hope this will be of use to anyone researching the Lancaster County, PA Immels in Germany.

Still trying to decipher the difference between Imel and Emmel and Emel and so on. Also trying to find Rufus Imel. He moved from somewhere in the midwest (Kansas?) to california in about 1940. Great site though. Tons of great information.

I am trying to get my hands on some genealogy info my grandmother gathered before her death. I believe the story she told says that I am descendant from Immelman brothers. There were 5 of them who came over to fight for the british in the American Revolution.

I know there are several of us who are interested in getting copies of this book, so I called the publishing company found on the title page. The person I spoke with said that they sold their last copy a couple years ago. I asked if they could do re-prints of the book, but apparently, it costs ten thousand dollars to this. I know this is not encouraging news, but I wanted to share.

If anyone has any copies of photographs or information not in this book regarding the Imels that I mentioned above that you're willing to share, please send me an email. Thanks!

As I was looking at different websites (I'm not too good at computer work), somehow as I was looking up information on my Chamberlin-Noah A. Cover family, your website sort of came up on rootsweb. I believe your Noah A. Cover was married to my gg aunt Mary Ann Chamberlin. She was born in Washington County, PA and her family moved to Tonica, Illinois about 1856. Mary Ann's brother Daniel Chamberlin was my great grandfather. Daniel and his father Arthur Chamberlin are buried in Tonica, Illinois. Do you think there is a connection? I live in Harrisburg, PA

I am searching for my GGgpa, Herman Immel & his sister Elizabeth of the Galloway Ohio area. I have resently aquirred his death record. However, neither parents names were listed on it.Then through the assistance of 1 of my cousins, I found out he had a sister. I am very confused since they were both supposedly born here in Ohio, yet nothing can be found on them except an old family tin type photo & death record for him & not her. I found this site interesting & definately will have it in my favorites. Thank you for all of your work.

I'm the son of Norman Lee Imel, and the story has been passed down through my family of my great great grandfather and his four brothers coming too the Colonial States to fight for the King of England by force, not by choice and then deserting to fight with the Patriots. I am 47 years old and still fight in the MMA (Pride/UFC type fighting--Mixed Martial Arts) so I guess the tough germanic genes were definately passed down our family tree, unfortunately I have no children that I know of so my branch will more than likely end with me.

Section IV (pages 253-276) is entitled “Descendants of Jacob Imel of Centre County, Pennsylvania. This is my line -- Andrew Imel who married Catherine Schounk and his descendants which I compiled in 65 typed pages and sent to Velma on June 6, 1970 along with 50 pictures, mostly of Solomon Emal and Daniel Emel’s lines.

For some reason I have a hard time trying to find the history of the Imel family. I am often asked where my family originated, I say I think Germany. I am faced with a sort of a problem. My sister and I are the last of the Imel name besides my dad. He had a brother with the last name but he died in a recent construction accident. I don't know if I should keep the name to keep the family name going or not. Anyways, sincerely... Tia

I have been trying to contact siblings to notify of biological fathers death, but first I have to find them. I see Ardith Becker who I am sure would have been one of my step mothers in your database. She had 3 children with my father Phillip W. Bearden who was born 11-15-1930 and died 11-14-2002. These would be some of my half siblings...Deborah (d. 1974); Royce (called Skeeter); and Cathy. I understood that after their divorce she served in the military and was stationed in Germany for an extended duty and that she also eventually remarried. We have had no contact or knowledge of them since my gmothers death. I know it's a long shot, but God's in the miracle business right? I'd love to hear from Ardith and her children and can be reached at eandpjohnson@alltel.net

Hello:

While researching my family tree to write a paper in my Humanities class I came across your website. I was able to trace back to Henry Imel, Sr. whose son John had a son named Thomas King Imel, who had a daughter named Sarah Elizabeth Imel, who married Elias Newton Stults who had a son named Guy Stults who had a son named Glen Stults who had a son Larry Stults, who is my father. Whew! This is so fascinating to be able to go back this far. My assignment is to go back to when my family immigrated to America. Now I know! Your site has given me even more information. I am researching the Himel,Hymel,Immel, Emelle line. The first who settled in Louisiana on the German Coast was David Himel (married to Marie Anne Schantz in 1739 in St. Charles Parish, La.) son of Johann (Hans) Peter Immel (born ca. 1685) and Susanna from Ellrichhausen, Germany. Johann had four children: Bernard Immel, George Immel, Susanna Immel, and David Immel (Himel). I am having difficulty connecting my grandfather, Pierre Himel (born Nov.1879 or 1874) married to Ovilia Boudreaux on Civil October 28, 1896 and church June 18, 1899. There is very little known about my grandfather. According to his death certificate with St. Philomene Church in Labadieville, La. .. he died May 14, 1935 with parents listed as Ernest Himel and Mathilde Thibodeaux. State death certificate lists mother as unknown. I have found an Ernest Himel for this time period but, who was married to an Ursinee Thibodeaux. I have found no Mathilde Thibodeaux married to an Ernest Himel for this period. I have not found a Pierre Himel born to an Ursinee Thibodeaux. Anyone with any information please contact me. My father was Junius Joseph Himel (born October 5, 1908) married to Medora Hidalgo on January 23, 1929 in Labadieville, La.

My Great Grandfather's name was Herman Immel, born August 27, 1877 in Colfax Co., Nebraska. On the www.familysearch.org website I found on an IGI record that his parents are listed as Henry and a Katherine.
Herman Immel married Margaret Carroll on May 29th, 1901 in Platte Co. Nebraska. On the marriage certificate his parents are listed as Jacob and Catherine.

Research shows that these are the same Hermans. This I know. Also, Herman was rumored to have a brother John.

I found a Census record, 1900, from Colfax Co. Nebraska, that listed a John Immel, born in Nebraska, June of 1873, (no names of parents listed, it was not one of the Census questions), with birthplace of parents UN (I assumed it was Unknown). It lists him as a farmer, with a wife of one year, Clara, born 1879 in Nebraska, birthplace of parents listed as Germany.
Also listed on their record is an Albert Thompson, age 16, listed as a Farm Laborer.

Both John Immel amd Albert Thompson listed the birthplace of their parents as unknown. On the WHOLE census sheet, they were the only ones to do so. Most others said Germany. This is odd to me.

So I believe that this John Immel is the brother of Herman Immel. It is still a mystery whether their father's name was Henry or Jacob, maybe Jacob Henry or Henry Jacob. Because Herman's wife, Margaret Agnes Carroll, was born in Walnut, Bureau Co., Illinois, it leads me to suspect that Herman's parents, (Henry or Jacob and Catherine or Katherine) had connections in Bureau Co., Illinois and that he (Henry or Jacob) was one of the unknown brothers of Johannes Immel of Bureau Co. Illinois. Of course more research has to be done, just fishing for clues here. Please e-mail me with any puzzle pieces, even if they are speculation.

Great Grandfather Herman named his children
Raymond Edward, Leonard Joseph or Joseph Leonard, Walter, Lawrence Everett, Vincent Patrick, and Margaret Evelyn. Raymond was my Grandfather.

All family photos this line had were destroyed in a flooded garage in Sterling Colorado. We have no pictures or documents.

Jenny Immel Ruley and James Ruley listed had several children, not just Mary Alice Elizabeth. My great grandmother, Carrie Bell Ruley Morris was the youngest. She was born in 1/1/1878 and died in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1961. Her husband's name was Patrick Henry Morris, born in 1874 and died in 1955, also in Stillwater. They had one child who survived, a daughter, Pauline Ruley Morris Wood, born 3/18/1900 in Helena, Oklahoma. In 1917, the family moved from Helena, Oklahoma, to Stillwater, Oklahoma to permit Pauline to attend Oklahoma A. & M., now Oklahoma State University. While in Stillwater, the Morrises initially clerked in Katz Department Store and later opened their own store, "Morris Style Shop" which sold ladies ready-to-wear. In 1929, they sold out as a result of the depression, leaving the premises with $5.00 to their name. They supported themselves by renting rooms to college students. Their house at 123 West Maple in Stillwater had four bedrooms and one bath upstairs which they rented. Carrie charged each renter $.25 a meal and washed and ironed their clothes and their sheets for a price. She also catered meals for local clubs, painted china, canned, made her own soap, crocheted table clothes and other linens, kept chickens, and made quilts. She credited her routine of taking a nap for 30 minutes a day as the source of her energy. Eventually, Patrick Morris was able to locate a job as a night clerk in a hotel in Stillwater. With all their work, they paid for their house.

Pauline Ruley Morris Wood graduated in 1922 and was a "Redskin Beauty" at Oklahoma A & M. Her photo is in the 1922 yearbook (The Redskin). She majored in French and was a Phi Beta Kappa. She and her friend started the Beta Mu sorority which later affiliated with Chi Omega; Pauline was a charter member and president of the Chi Omega Corporation in Stillwater for many years. Pauline died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1976.

Pauline married Sylvan Rupert Wood on 6/1/1922. He was born on April 9, 1895 in Marshall, Minnesota, and had come to Stillwater to work on his Masters' Degree in Chemistry. The two met at a party. Both had come with someone else, and when they were introduced, neither hardly spoke to the person with whom s/he had come to the party; they only had eyes for each other. They had one daughter, Carrie Morrisine Wood, born in Stillwater, Oklahoma on 3/19/1923. She married Philip Prescott Chandler, born Merrill, Wisconsin 7/27/1924, on February 9, 1945. Their first child, Philip Prescott Chandler II was born on November 4, 1945, while Philip, his father, was an Ensign in the U.S. Navy serving as a gunnery officer on an ocean going landing craft, an LSM in the Pacific. Carrie and Philip graduated from Oklahoma A & M in 1948. She majored in English and minored in Spanish, and Philip majored in Geology. In 1950, they moved to Norman, Oklahoma. Philip was a graduate assistant in the Geology Department and working on his Master's Degree. Their daughter, Nannette Wood Chandler, was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, 6/14/1950. Later, the family moved back to Stillwater. Philip taught Geology and Morrisine gave birth to Christopher Patrick Chandler on 4/14/1953. Morrisine finished her Master's in English and taught in the English department at Oklahoma A & M until 1961 when the family moved to Oklahoma City. Philip became the Director of Oklahoma State University Technical Institute. Morrisine taught English at Central State College in Edmond, later Central State University, and now University of Central Oklahoma. Philip retired in 1983. Morrisine retired in 1993.

Philip Prescott Chandler II (Phil) married Loretta Verl Bollschweiler (Verl). They have had a extremely varied life. Phil graduated from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1968. He earned a Ph.D in History of Science from the University of California in San Diego; a Ph.D in Political Science/Government from the University of Dallas in 1998, and a J.D. from the University of South Dakota in 2001. Phil speaks fluent French, Spanish, and German as well as ancient Greek and Latin. Verl earned a Ph.D in Philosophy from Notre Dame and a J.D. from the University of South Dakota in 2000. Obviously, they have lived all over the United States and in Europe. They have four children, Catilin, Siobhan, Rhiannon, and Natheniel. Catilin and her husband, Dorian, are the parents of identical twin daughters, and one son.

Many thanks for putting this online! I had read in a letter sent to my father that a book had been written. When visiting the Univ. of Wisconsin in Madison last year I found a copy at the Wisconsin State Historical society. Of course I noted everything which pertained to my family group. But I live in Pa. and won't be traveling to Wisconsin again soon. Now i can recheck info from this copy online. I am decended from Johannes Immel and his wife Elizabeth Feightner. Love to chat with anyone else in this twig. Thanks Lois Immel Salvatora

Thank God for the Mormons. I did find a little more about Herman Immel in their IGI records...if it is my Greatgrandfather. They list a Herman Immel, born August 27th, Colfax (County I think they mean), Nebraska. His dad was Henry Immel, his mom was just listed as Katherine. The IGI record for Henry B. Immel is a marriage listing, for Henry and Catherine Stauffer, in 1859, in Millersville, Lancaster (County), Pa. Then there was an IGI birth listing for Catherine Stauffer, born Sept. 10, 1824 to a Christian and Christina (Ensminger) Stauffer in York, Pa. So I checked an Ensminger gen. page and verified that this was accurate (up to and including marrying a Henry Immel. But in doing the math, Catherine would have been 53 years old when she had Greatgrandfather Herman. Because of this and the difference in the K and C in the spelling of Katherine/Catherine, along with the lack of maiden name for Katherine on the IGI birth record of Herman Immel, I am not convinced. Any help out there? Am I supposed to keep these messages short? Lily

Here is some more info regarding the search for the heritage of my Greatgrandfather Herman Immel: His name MIGHT have been Edward Herman Immel. He and his wife (Margaret Carroll Immel) named their children Raymond Edward, Leonard Joseph, Walter, Lawrence Everett, Vincent Patrick and Margaret Evelyn. Other information I have found (but has not been verified) is that Herman had a brother John. Another bit of vague info is that Herman's father died an

I am looking for info on my Greatgrandfather, Herman Immel, who married Margaret Agnes Carroll on 5/28/1901 in Platte Co., Nebraska. The info I have, drawn up by lawyers because of an estate settlement, says that Margaret Carroll was born 8/7/1878 in Walnut Co., Ill. There is no Walnut Co. There is a Walnut in Bureau Co. Perhaps she met Herman Immel in Bureau Co. Perhaps Herman is a descendant of the unknown brothers of Johannes Immel who was born 1808 in Germany and died Feb.18th 1889 in Bureau Co. Ill. I am continuing to track down clues. As people tell it, my Greatgrandfather Herman wasn't much of a talker.

This is my first attempt to access Immel family information and I am delighted to have found this site. I had some sense of a Pennsylvania history but had no idea that there were Immels in the US dating back to Revolutionary War (Hessian mercenaries or not). However, I believe that my grandfather may have come from Germany right before WW1 as I have been told that German was spoken in the home until the war.

Hi! Nice website! I'm researching my mother's line out of Holmes and Wayne County, Ohio. They are not part of this book, as they were much later immigrants. But I thought I'd sign the guestbook, as perhaps there are others out there who cannot make a connection to the book.

I descend from Georg Leonhard Immel b. 11 Dec 1791 in Schönbronn, Crailsheim District, Württemberg, Germany and his wife Maria Dorothea Meger b. 8 Jun 1796 in Burleswagon, Crailsheim, Württemberg, Germany. They came to America (to Holmes County, Ohio) about 1840 with two young sons, Georg Michael (b. 1825) and Johann George "John G." (b. 1831). Have the line back two more generations from Georg Leonhard in Germany. There is at least one other Immel line in Holmes County, that we feel is related but not sure how (yet!): Leonhard Michael & Regina Rosina Immel (They came from Wallhausen, Gerabronn District, Germany to Holmes County about 1853).

Anyone out there related to these Holmes County Ohio lines? Love to hear from you!
