My maiden name is Attwood, my Father's name was Frederick Thomas Attwood. His large family came from Broomfield Road Waltham Abbey, Essex. My brother, Brian, was always told by my Uncle Jack that he would inherit a tea plantation in Jamaca, this story has always facinated us and wondered if there are any Attwoods living in Jamaca

My wife came across your website and I found this very interesting ...good on you for doing such a great job..
My interest in the Atwood side of my family is Rueben Wright (G.G.Grandfather) who married an Olive Atwood..

The interesting thing about finding the Atwood connection is my Father is Harry Atwood Wright..aparently the Atwood name was passed down through 3 generations within the Wright's..I never knew until now where Atwood came from..
thank you for such an intersting site..keep up the good work..

Am delighted to find so much research being done on the At(t)woods. I'm a great granddaughter of William Attwood b1864 Worcestershire (Cradley?), who emigrated to Australia via New Zealand in about 1869 with his parents William Attwood b.abt 1844, mother Jane Weir b.1844 Old Swinford and sister Annie b.1868. My great great grandparents were William b.abt 1817 and Rhoda Harris b 1819 Rowley Regis Worcester ( I think). Am waiting for certificates to get confirmation of this. Would be happy to share this Attwood line with co-researchers and keen to hear from anyone who can add more detail. So many William Attwood's that I have gone down many fascinating trails (in error) so far.
regards

An admirable effort! I envy the ease with which one can research in the UK. I live in New Zealand and it is very limiting.
My Grandfather, Horace Attwood, b. 1870, was the only one of his family to emigrate to NZ. His father was George Ethelred Attwood, Wine Merchant of Colchester, born c1819 in Lewes, Surrey. His wife was Alice.
There are no other male Attwood descendants from that line as Horace's only brother had no children, at least I think so. There was a brother named Frank,b. 1864, but he disappears after the 1881 census. Regards

I live in Helena, Montana, USA and have traced my Atwoods back to Thomas Atwood who came over to America (Connecticut) around 1650's from possibly Bromfield, Essex Co. England. Really would like to find more English ancestry but nothing seems to be available with much accuracy.

Dear Christopher

I am trying to find information on a Charles Attwood/Atwood who
I believe was an Attorney at Law, He married Mary Herbert at Usk
Monmouthshire in 1771 and had 2 children that I know of, namely
Charles 1771 died same year and Mary Temperance born before
1775.

His daughter married Dr Gilbert Ford in London in 1791. Mary w/o
Charles died at Usk in 1824 aged 75.

I would like to find out if Charles left a Will, there is no PCC or
Monmouthshire reference to leaving a Will. So there may be a Will
from another diocese.

Charles may have come from Worcester, but I am not sure.

Mike John

HI there
Great web site I like the idea that we could be related to Robin Hood. I am first generation New Zealander my family came from the Uk. They were living in Canvey Island. My Grandparents Thomas and Doris Attwood Came out to NZ just after WWII with their children David and Eunice.
David my father married Rosalind Pincham and had me and my brother Stuart. I have two daughters Kea(named after the native nz mountain parrot) and Willow named after the tree.
My brother Stuart has one son Callen.
Anyway keep up the site Cheers

I am researching the Attwood name in my tree. My Attwoods come from the Heathfield/Waldron/Wadhurst areas of East Sussex.
My great grandmother Hannah Attwood was born 1844 Heathfield. Her father John Attwood was born about 1811 in the same area and married Harriet Stredwick in 1834 in Heathfield.
John Attwoods father was samuel Attwood born 1779 Waldron and married Elizabeth Mepham born 1780. They married 1804 at wadhurst.
I dont know if you are reasrching the Attwoods in the area at all. Please let me know if you have further information or if theres anyone else researching the same line as me.
regards Julie

Great web site! Congratulations!
I am descended from the Attwood family from BROMHAM in Wiltshire [m. MINTY family]. The 'family story' is that an Attwood member was a courier for Oliver Cromwell! I have heard many family stories but this one will probably stay unconfirmed! Anyone heard of this one?

Some Attwood members immigrated to Victoria Australia.

I am researching the Attwood name from Sussex.
My earliest Attwoods are Samuel b Waldron abt 1777 and his wife Elizabethb Wadhurst abt 1779.
They had Sons John b Heathfield abt 1812, William b 1808 Samuel b1813
John Attwood married Harriet and they had Stephen b 1835 Heathfield, who died young and unmarried, Harriot and my Great Grandmother Hannah b 1840.
Hannah then married a James Woodgate also from heathfield and they moved to Brighton. He died and she took up with John Dine from Brighton and my grandfather Edward Woodgate Dine was born 1886.
Hope this helps with your study,. If you require more Attwood details, then let me know. I have traced them to about 1910 in Sussex and Kent.

My maternal family are of Attwood stock, the earliest ancestor I have located is a George Henry Gilbert Attwood who was born in Putney, Surrey about 1851. GHG Attwood, so I am told married three times, I have marriage details for the first and third, but second has eluded me. To trace further back than GHG, has been made difficult, by the fact, that I have found no record of his birth and on both marriage certificates I have, his father's forenames are different. So old GHG has not made it easy for me. GHG it appears worked on Carlisle to Settle railway, and married in Penrith, later census show him further south, and eventually in 1891 he is living in Heston in Middlesex. He died in 1928 aged 77 years and is buried in Heston Churchyard, along with his son (my grandfather) and grandmother. If anyone can shed some light on this fellow, that would allow me to trace further, then would be more than glad to hear from them.

many thanks for such an interesting history. I am researching the "Attwoods" my mothers kin, and having reached back to 1500 to a Richard Attwood born at Austcliff,Wolverley, england. The old records(films) only show his father as "Attwood" and I find that Austcliff appears to be just a field, (thanks to google world) the nearest in fact the only other Attwoods living in Wolverley at the same time ,is a John Attwood married to Anne from a place called "Attwood Park. They had a son Anthony, born about the same time as my Richard 1500. Its a bit difficult over here in Australia, but so addictive, every clue is gratefully leapt upon and dissected with glee. thanks and keep up the good work......Josie

Thanks for your reply on the genes reunited website. I am tracing my family tree and found that Thomas Attwood is indeed a distant ancestor of mine. Thomas Adams (who was born 8 January 1718 according to my records) had a daughter Ann who was the mother of Thomas Adams. My Grandmother was Ethel Adams.

My attwoods are so far back related to kent in the Stockbury,Hollingbourne and surrounding areas. There are several people searching this line but the stumbling block was not too far back and maybe information given by another researcher which seems convincing is the true line but i will not say for sure it is, however if you would like this tree for your records i will be pleased to send details.
