The I am trying to gather some information about Burke County, Georgia for a family Reunion. My husband's mother was from Burke County. We are an African American family. The Keeplers were share crop farmers. The Family attended was Bark Camp Baptist Church. I know that his grandfather was named Edger Keepler and his Wife was Jane (Matthews) Keepler. Edger Keepler was born June 1865 and the mother was considerable younger. I do not know any of the names of land or slave owners in midville. The land they farmed on was very close to the Bark Camp Church. I can't seem to find any more details , is there any information you can share about the area I wanted to share information about the types of crops grown, what life was like for Blacks in Midville etc, pictures of land, houses, buildings in Midville. Would your book share information that would be relative.
Thanks I look forward to hearing from you.

William was a county commissioner in 1795 as attested to on the historical marker in front of the present day Burke County courthouse and was a clerk of the Inferior Court in 1805. They moved to Wilkinson County and stayed there for about 30 years returning to Burke County sometime after 1840. In the early 1980's, a Mr. Sam Jenkins of a small Georgia town, possibly Baxley, gave Mr. Hilton Jenkins a copy of his research on the Jenkins genealogy that listed another Sam Jenkins as the father of the first Izatus Jenkins. Izatus was born in the early 1800's. The work gave much detail on the Jenkins genealogy. Cousin Hilton gave me a copy which was later lost. Does anyone know Sam or how I might get in touch with him or his family so I can get another copy of this document? If any of Cousin Hilton's folks know how I might get a copy, please let me know.

I am looking for information on my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Perhaps someone can offer some advice on how I should proceed or whom I should be contacting for birth/death certificates.
As you may note, Burke County represents the beginning of my "Family Tree" ; My father, John Q. Anthony was born on 7/23/1932 in Waynesboro, Georgia. He died on 12/23/2000 in Staten Island, NY. I am the executor of his estate, and can provide documentation of same if required.
My grandfather, also John Quincy Anthony, was born on 10/5/1897. He died on 6/24/1947 in Burke County in McBean, Georgia. I have a death certificate for my grandfather which I received from my father.
My grandfather's father, Clark W, Anthony, was born in Burke County Georgia as well; I do not know his date of birth or death.
In sum, I need BIRTH certificates for my father (John Anthony), my grandfather (also John Anthony), and my great-grandfather (Clark Anthony). I also need a DEATH certificate for my great-grandfather, Clark Anthony.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Nice job your doing. Was looking for the Belcher family {Daniel Belcher and Mary Ann Burke, found his other family members but not him} from Burke County, they brought my gggrandfather, James Dean, from Burke county, to the south Georgia area of Early/Decatur county, Rumor is that he was orphaned and received a land grant for Appling/Wilks county in about 1820, and was took to south Georgia instead. His relatives may have been: Luke/Esther Dean,{I know these 2 people were living in Burke County in mid to late 1700's, along with 3 children,I believe them to be Luke Jr., Seth, and James} I think that James probably had a son/grandson named James, and that he is the one who was orphaned. I have seen the Belcher family graves in a private cemetery and know that Daniel Belcher was born 1797, and his wife Mary 1802.

Hi Marge,
I just wanted to say that I've found some interesting and potentially useful material on your site. The Beech Branch Baptist Church records list what appear to be my gg-grandparents Nicholas (1812 - 1883) and Nancy Royal (1824 - 1883) Reddick. Also, my ggg-grandmother Mary Ann Ivey Reddick may also be on that same list. Mary Ann's husband was John Reddick - they being the parents of Nicholas. Also, John's father had been named Nicholas. He supposedly married a woman whose maiden surname may have been Clark (a family name associated with Clark's Chapel [Memorial] Church - located just South of Blythe and Southeast of Keysville). Nicholas' brother Peter married Margaret Clark, and it is thought that it was a cousin of this Margaret Clark who married Nicholas.
Two of the siblings of Nicholas (my gg-grandfather [1812 - 1883) were: John Ivey Reddick, who is buried at Hurst Baptist Church - between Hiltonia and Sardis; and Adaline Reddick (who married her second cousin Peter N. Reddick), who is buried at the small, private Reddick family cemetary just South of the old site of Jacksonboro - the former county seat of Screven County.
Anyhow - NICE SITE!
Dale E. Reddick

My roots "start" in Burke County. Legend is that 3 brothers came as indentured servants from Ireland and they chose not to finish their servitude. But, from where my great, great, great-grandfather came from in Europe, or how he got to Burke/Richmond Counties/Columbia S. Carolina is unknown. We were always under the impression that the records had been burned by Gen. Sherman in 1865. This may not be the case after reading the history of the Burke County Courthouse.

My paternal g-g-g-g-grandparents were John L. Wood and Elizabeth Duke, who emigrated with their child Rebecca and Elizabeth Duke's brothers from London, England in late 1700's to Waynesboro where they both died about 1800, leaving young children John Lumpkin(b.abt.1800--2mos.after father's death;married Sarah Wicker Calloway in Baldwin County;died 1858 in Louisiana) and Rebecca Wood (married James A. Perdew while very young;after his death married a Conally, the overseer on her plantation;she was still living in 1882). Elizabeth Duke's brothers assumed control over the children after parents deaths, sold their slaves and converted their property to cash and fled to Texas. A suit was brought to recover something for the children and judgment was given for $10,000 in favor of the Wood children, John Lumpkin and Rebecca. Since Texas was not a state, it could not be enforced. There should be records of this in Burke County or possibly Baldwin County. Documentation. leads, or further information of any kind will be very much appreciated.

The moved to Florida sometime after 1820, but prior to 1830 as they are shown in the 1830 Florida census. Thomas's wife was Nancy (no maiden name). I am trying to document their residence in Burke County as well as any available information. Thanks for any help you can give me.

she was married to izatus jenkins and was in the home with

My father, William Johnson Lovett, Sr., was from theSardis area. He was born sometime around 1898. He had two sisters, Mamie Joe and Lucy Bell. I think they both married Bargerons. He passed away in 1952 and is buried in a cemetery in Sardis. He was married twice. My mother passed away in March 1999 and since that time I have been trying to locate family history to pass to my son.

My family has roots in Burke County. I found Marriage certificates for Everett and Martha Lassiter in the "Colored" marriage book in the clerk of the probate court office. I also found a marriage certificates for Anderson Reynolds and Cora Lassiter, Sarah Chance(Herrington) and Charlie Smith and several other relatives. According to family history Martha Chance Lassiter was the product of an interracial relationship that continued well after slavery ended. All of my older relatives insist that this man's name was "Booth" Chance. Thats all the information I have. Currently I am trying to locate death certificates for Proctor Lassiter and Sarah Herrington. I have written to the Vital Statistics Office in Atlanta, Ga. and they have no record of Proctor Lassiter or Sarah Herrington Smith. they searched thirty years for both of these individuals. I have also searched the Jenkins County records. No such luck! However I did find both Martha and Everett Lassiter's death certificates. Any suggestion that you may have will be greatly appreciated. I have a second e-mail address: Traybird2000@aol.com. Waynesboro is a nice town and I enjoy visiting there.
Feel free to send any suggestions
Sincerely
Traci Hartsfield McIntyre

I am looking for the spouse and children of Susannah King, widow, registrant no. 28 in the 1805 Land Lottery, who drew 2 blanks. Somehow, apparently, she obtained a grant for a partial lot of land in originally Baldwin, now Morgan, county, Georgia, which passed somehow to Lewis King and Henry King, and I would like to find some record of this grant.
I would also be interest in anything concerning Henry King, Benjamin King, Benijah King, or Thomas King of Burke County.

Marge,
Hi again, It is so great to see the cemetaries listed on the web, I know that there is alot of information to imput and that you are very busy. But I have a question, I have walked all the cemetaries that my gggrandparents may have been buried in but to date I have been unable to find the graves I am searching for. None of the cemetaries seem to have graves that go back to the 1850's or are the headstones gone. Were they wood and rotted away or have I just not yet found the oldest cemetary? I found the old Church cemetary and walked the Old McCoy cemetary that contains hundreds of unmarked graves that are overgrown with trees and in sad shape. The old McCoy church is still standing and deserves some type of restoration to save it. Any imput on the cemetaries would be and always is appreciated. Thanks Mark
