Hi Kenny:
I was wondering if you thought it might be a fun project to put together a “reunionö book of pictures of each of us. Kind of like a High School Year book, but in this case, there would be a “thenö and “now" picture side by side with our names and the date range we “hung outö at GF. This would kind of be a photo album of sorts. It might be a fun way to walk down memory lane and see where we are today. Anyway it was just a thought.
Sincerely,
Debbie (Anderson) Fischbeck

I started out speedskating and my dad made me switch to ice dancing. My instructor was Marjori Ackles, skated with Roger Fortin. We won Pacific west coast bronze dance at pickwick, love the memories and spent alot of time there. Does anyone remember Jack Antonucci?

Wow, this one sure brings back memories! Skating in the GFSSC was one of the bright moments of my youth, I really used to look forward to Monday evenings. There's a real connection to the past here, and I still have 2 team pictures, 1962 and 1963 if anyone wants to post them.
That was the year we sent Bill & Jack Disney to Innsbruck, also the year 6 out of 14 positions on the 1964 team went to Southern Californians.
It kinda floored me to see teammate Charley Gilmore made the US Olympic team (72&76); he was only a little better than me when I skated against him.

Was VP of GFFSC in '68, '69, and board member with the Aamadts & the Wilsons, met my wife, Jean there and we skated in many dance competitions. We loved the Sunday morning and Thursday evening dance sessions, and the breakfasts with the gang every Sunday morning across the street on Katella in Anaheim. Have many show programs for skating shows we put on there, when Jean & I chair'd the shows. Recently we were contacted by Vikki Geller a special friend & figure skating coach and she mentioned that she had competitors in the Glacier Falls competition, which resulted in my searching Google for Glacier Falls FSC this morning. I wasn't aware that the club was still in existance, but am pleasantly surprised and truly admire the folks who created this website.

Debbie was also in the same school as me...The last 25 years I lived in Europe (Germany and England, NOT military) and I now live in Santa Fe New Mexico.

Glacier Falls was my second home and cherish every moment I skated there! My mother, Jeri Duncan, was on the Glacier Falls FSC board. She opened the rink early mornings for the patch sessions. Mom passed in January 2007, but her memory lives on every time I step on the ice to coach. Some of the skaters I shared patch sessions with were Jill Harbin, Dorian Shields, Terry Kubica, Glen Shulke. Gene Ashley was the skate sharpening guru and it took me a long time to find someone in Texas as talented as he was. Evy Scotvold was my first coach...still remember him sitting on a little chair with his thermos of coffee on the patch sessions. What wonderful memories of Glacier Falls that will live in my heart forever!

As for anyone else, Hello to all. Hope to see how well the beach trip will work out. I think that's a great idea. Maybe make it one of those all and and nite type of trips. If that has not already been thought of. Make it when you can and towards the night time, get that fire going and really sit back and relax and enjoy the company.
Hava great one all!

It would be great to make it to a reunion someday...hopefully, I will remember some people and they might recall who I am. Ahhh, the good old days, going to the rink on Friday nights to speed skate. I still can recall all the sights and sounds of the rink. Just having fun, enjoying my freedom as a young girl, only to look up and see my folks sitting in the restaurant, glaring at me!

Heard about Rink Rats from Don Rabbitt, the current president of the Glacier Falls Figure Skating Club. I was the first Secretary and Treasurer of the club in 1961 and am currently serving on the Board of Directors.
I have some old newspaper clippings, show programs, etc. from the early years and may be able to attach some to email letters. I think someone mentioned on your website the rink opening in 1959. The rink was the first one in Orange County and opened in 1961 just after the plane crash that killed the entire US Figure Skating Team.

My father Marshall Garrett who passed away recently in Vancouver, Canada was Manager at G.F. for many years. I was just a boy of maybe 2 years old and began skating on the rink there. My memories of that palace for skating or infinite. I know Willie Kall, and Shirley Winter and many of the original teachers because we moved in the same circle. My mother and father were both professionals skaters from Ice Capades and Ice Follies. My parents would have parties at our home in Newport Beach with Willie and Shirley Winter, and Marshall Beard and Maggie Beard and so many well known pro skaters from ice shows that traveled the world. My life was filled with memories of there tales. How wonderful they were. I wish my dad was alive, he would have been at that reunion to see so many of you who I know he would have remembered. My mom taught skating in Switzerland every winter in an outdoor rink in the Alps up until last year, until the age of I think 73 years old. She can still out skate me. I taught skating in the same rink with my mom in Switzerland for several years when I was in my twenties to make some traveling money when I would visit my mom. I did not much like to ice skate, but I did appreciate the exercise that I got and the money I made doing it. I remember hanging around the lobby area at glacier falls near the fire place and how warm it made me feel. I remember being in back of the rental area handing out rentals, and then at the end of sessions getting hot sweaty skates back, having to tuck in the laces and re-shelving the stinky skates. Going to the restaurant -my dad told me Karl Karcher the owner of Karl's started one of his first hamburger restaurants in Glacier Fall's Rink. Also Marshall Garrett managed the Falls in the 70's for a year or so. Then he managed the Klondike Ice Rink near South Coast Plaza for awhile. Will Kall and my dad were in Ice Follies traveling in the late 50's around North America. Will was the clown of the show, such a nice man. Buddy La Londe was in the show with Marshall and Will Kall and Shirley Winter, Ken Rogers, Marshall Beard Margaritte Beard and many more pros. The people who opened and ran Glacier Falls were all stars from the days before these Linsey Lohan and Brad Pitts. They were truly talented, smart and part of my world. Hope to hear more about GF soon, I will keep checking messages.
Take care all.
Spencer Garrett (45 yrs old)

I began going to Glacier Falls in the late 70's and continued until the rink closed. I skated there on the last day. Anyway, I am curious to know if anyone knows anything about Gene Ashley. When I went to Glacier Falls, he had his own skate shop in Anaheim. My family and I became rather close to him during those years, and we lost contact after the rink closed. I believe he had some health issues at the time. If anyone knows anything about him, I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, my coach was Shirley Winter. If anyone has any information on her, it would also be greatly appreciated.

I too would like to thank the Hedgpeth clan for putting together a great get-together, and thank Kenny for a great job on this web site that allows us to share our thoughts and memories. What a special moment that was, when Jerry Pease sang the memories of Glacier Falls song, with three generations of "rats" singing along! Thanks to Jerry Search and Bob for the pictures and memorabilia of the early days. I had NO idea that Glacier had such a rich history and tradition within the speed skating world!
I too agree that future get-togethers should be on ice somewhere, for it was ice that has bonded us.
Furthermore, I have a proposition -
ALL of us have at least a story (or two or three...) about "The Falls" that would be fascinating to hear about. For example, the group that skated on Big Bear Lake - How did you know where the ice was thick (and safe) enough to skate on? (or DID you!!?? ;)
- Did Al Thall(our beloved doorman)ever skate?
I know he hung out with the Disneyland Hotel ballroom dancing crowd...
- Why, in the late 1970's, did Anaheim Police have an officer (wearing a helmet no less) stationed between the ice floor and the lobby on Friday and Saturday nights?
- And finally, "Big Jim" Lawrence told me that a fellow employee at Glacier once told him that there was a GHOST that haunted the Falls!! (A woman who didn't actually die there, but who was so attached to the place emotionally that her spirit remained there). Maybe some of the 1960's-early 1970's people know something about this!!??
Anyway, I think we need a stories, legends and lore section so we can learn from each other why our rink was so special. I would love to learn more about that old building and the people who preceded my presence there.
'Tanks for the memories....

For those that we weren't able to locate, and those that had other commitments ... ya did missed out on a good time :)

The reunion just reinforced the fact that even though many years have passed, we're still a group of rink rats that spent some important years of our lives skating together (partying together, playing together, cycling together)and despite the years we can all get back together and share some great memories - granted it might take a little longer to fire up the brain matter to remember that far back...
My heartfelt thanks to everyone that organized this event, it was well worth the trip out from Phoenix and I'd gladly do it again. What a blast from the past....
So until we meet again - be happy and be well.

AWESOME REUNION!!! We had a GREAT time!!! Thank you Kenny, Sandy, Dave, Valerie, families and friends for all the hard work. You made it worth my trip down from the Bay Area. Groups like the Rink Rats happen once in a lifetime, I'm soooo glad you were all a part of it back then, and now too. We made friendsips at GF that will last a lifetime, the reunion proved it. Let's do some skating next time!
See you all soon!

Hey Jerry Search....can you tell me what would be the best skates for me to buy? I don't even know the terms to use anymore, and they would only be for fun, but I used to wear "off-center" Planert Kangaroo Skins. They were stolen some years ago. Can you help? :)
Thank you!!

My older brother had a pair of black figure skates in his closet. At sixteen years old I took his skates to a couple of evening sessions at Polar Palace on Whittier Blvd.
Living in Placentia I found Glacier Falls Ice Arena to be a shorter drive. Observing other skaters and having a desire to freestyle I soon changed over to hockey skates. 1972 Regularly attending evening sessions at Glacier Falls, Rita Ledbetter working the concession stand that joined the restaurant to the ice rink soon befriended me and allowed me to bring my skates through the restaurant to be secretly placed underneath the concession counter.
The 8:00pm session would begin with people being let in through the front door. At the right moment when the coast was clear Rita would allow me to slip into and amongst the crowd in the upper lobby. Both of us knew the only thing holding me back was Gene Ashley across the way at the office skate counter. He was aware of everything that went on in that rink and we knew it. I awaited Rita's green light signal and taking a glance myself to see if Gene had become preoccupied - no chance, he was starring right at me and with his finger told me to come over to him. He's going to kick me out of the ice rink I thought to myself as I walked over to him. He said, to keep you from sneaking in you start tonight, get on a red jacket and go skate guard. I couldn't believe it and as you can imagine I was very happy.
All of you, we want to hear from you. Write and tell us your story. See you July 14th !

As a young South African travelling the US, Renee Daisey employed me as a supervisor at Glacier Falls during the spring of 1981. I have fond memories of driving the zamboni, running the night session & upsetting the figure skaters with my choice of music, sleeping in car or the first aid room after shift and having skaters wanting to know who the person was with the strange accent on the rinks answering machine! I still have my GF jacket ! But the people made GF an amazing place and ufortunately I lost touch with all once I returned back to South Africa, so it's great to see that the memories aren't all lost with the reunion coming up - enjoy ! Check my pics out and if anyone remembers me , I'd love to hear from them .

"THE NEXT FEW MINUTES ARE FOR EXPERIENCED SPEED AND HOCKEY SKATERS ONLY"
And with those delicious words announced, it was time for us elite skaters to take over the floor for a few moments of speed, form, and stunts! I enjoyed the weekend night sessions because it was a fun and social crowd of regulars we had there. I usually had a "sip" of Andre champagne in my car before coming in, as I had to try and keep warm considering I was wearing shorts!
But my favorite memory of "the falls" was the weekend day sessions that ran from 12:30-5pm. It was usually less crowded, and I had plenty of room to practice some of my whacky stunts that I would try to show off later at night session. I really enjoyed helping the little kids learn to skate during day sessions. Big Jim let me bring in my own music, and I'll never forget skating around to the soundtrack of "Xanadu", and listening to ELO.
It was good times, good people, and good music!
Thanks to the Hedgpeth's for putting this thing all together. It is really impressive to see how a dark and cold building at 211 W.Katella could mean so much to so many people, and forever bond them in time.
Cheers, TM007

About that Big Bear Lake picture in the "who is this?" section. I remember Terry Knisley picking us all up in his van at o-dark-thirty. I crawled in the back & fell asleep. Someone woke me up when we got to a 7-11 in San Bernadino to get coffee & donuts. For some reason I also picked up a bottle of Vin Rose. We put on our skates near the dam & skated all the way to the observatory (about 5 miles?). By the time we started back the wind had kicked up & it was pretty hard skating back against a strong headwind. When we finally got back we were exhausted & we sat on that rock & passed the wine around. Jerry set the timer on his camera set it on another rock for a group photo. I sent it to Paula Rankin last week & her comment was that we all look so young & carefree............DEFINATLY!!! Crazy too, to be skating on that frozen lake.

WOW, lots of memories...especially the theme from "A Summer Place," while skating. I don't remember the first time I went to Glacier Falls, but I took lessons for a couple of years from Harland Parker, Evy Scotvold, and at another rink from Buddy LaLand (spelling). Never did the compepitions, just loved to skate. My Mom would drop me off in the morning and pick me up end of the day. I just recently got rid of my "old" skates. The foam on tongue was shot, blades were decent (Semi-pro I think) and the leather on the Harlick boots held it's own after being boxed for over 30 years. I think I last skated at Glacier Falls when I was 18-21 years old and I'm 53 now. Loved the rink and the people there. Wonderful memories. My son skates for fun at Glacial Gardens (off State College)occasionally. Wish I had pictures, but I don't think my Mom took any. BUT I stil have one skating skirt a friend of my Mom's made for me put away somewhere. I remember it being a blue on one side and resersible to a print on the other side. Memories...as I said are great and include many years at Glacier Falls.

This site has brought back so many happy memories! I skated regularly from about 1968 to 1973. I remember the last time I skated there was February 1974. I was 7 months pregnant, and they said I couldn't skate anymore. All the trouble we got into there, and I finally get booted for being pregnant!
Happy memories: Speed and Hockey, Late-late night skating with mist on the ice, broom ball games, pots of coffee in the restaurant, a birthday party we had for Shelley F in the club room (I might have pictures). My Olympic Specials I bought for $85 (I still have the skates and the receipt). Skating the wrong way when it was crowded. Was that because the ice got bad, or they wanted to slow us down? And lots of memories of after hours activities: parties at Charlie Z's, Los Alamitos, how many people can cram into the back of George's van. Then a bunch of us got religion, and had a trip to Evy's Christian ranch in the desert. (The religion didn't stick with me, but the trip was sure fun).
I'm sure going to try to make the reunion. I have to find out what happened to Choo-Choo Charley. See you all soon.

According to my dad the original idea for Glacier Falls belonged to George Baney. He got together a group of local businessmen to invest in the rink. Marshall Garrett skated in the Ice Capades with my parents & owned & managed the Kona Kai Motel just down the street. When he got wind of the project he contacted Baney & applied for job as manager. He was hired as the 1st manager & he hired my dad as asst. manager.
When Marshall left my dad took over, he brought a guy named Chuck Dorning out from Pittsburgh as his asst. mgr. My dad had worked for Chuck at an ice rink in PA when he was a teenager. He also hired Johnny Davis as his other asst.
When my dad left to open the 1st Ice Capades Chalet Johnny took over as mgr. with Joe Felicione & Chuck Dorning as assts. Rick Scott eventually replaced Chuck Dorning. Rick Scott left & Joe Felicione went to Costa Mesa to take over the management of the new Klondike rink. Johnny hired me & Gene Ashley as his assts.
Johnny Davis left to go to work for the Ice Capades Chalets & the owners were forced to put me as acting manager even though I was only 21 at the time. I managed the rink for about 2 years before Baney came in & took it over himself.
Baney didn't last long & after that...Biff Redden, Gene Ashley, & eventually the rink was sold & closed down.
The "stockholders"
1. George Baney - owned a local construction co.
2. Bill Koleto - an Anaheim CPA
3. Delmar Pebley - also part owner of Western Hills Golf Course, La Mirada
4. Joe Lemon - local contractor
5. Frank Sweitzter - mayor of Brea CA
6. Howard Gilmore - owner Gilmore's Restaurant in Anaheim & Gilmore's Country Kitchen in Orange.
7. Virgil Kisner - ?
8. Larry Allan - ?
Except for the 1st part this is all from my deteriorating memory (the 1st part is from my dad's deteriorating memory).

Hi:
I was pleasantly suprised to receive the post card in the mail. Thank you for remembering me. My sister Kathy Anderson and I both joined the speed skating club somewhere around 1963 or 1964. I have many fond memories of Glacier Falls. I spent most of my teenage years skating the moonlight session ... and the parties that followed. I will always cherish the friendships (though I rarely see anyone any more) I made in those years.
I would definitely be interested in a "skate night". I will try to get to the reunion as well. I will check with my sister Kathy to see if she would like to provide you with contact information too.
Thanks agaim fpr the invite.

Hello all my dear friends,
Man I miss those days and nights that I shared with you guys. What a great time our youth was - we were so lucky to grow up when we did and where we did with who we did. It will never be the same for our children, nieces and nephews and grangchildren. I'm not saying it's worse now - it was just so much better then. I will never forget those days - as they were the good old days. All of you were so much a part of my life - you were family to me. You all helped shape my life - and soul - and being. I am what I am today because of friends like you. I'm not talking about my social status on this ladder we climb, what you all gave me runs much deeper than material possesions and means so much more to me. Some really great parents of yours shared my youth also - thanks for sharing them with me. They let us have partys at their houses, treated us like their own kept us in line when they needed to. They fed us and nurtured us - and gave us sustanance for both !
body and mind. Best of all they accepted us as we were and with their kindness (and disipline) helped shape our lives. Thoughts of you and moments from my past are frequent to cross my mind, I usually always smile and for this alone I thank you. I can't wait to see all of you.

I never had a boring time at GLACIER FALLS, and I was not a particularly good skater, nor am I today. I always went with friends and the last time was probably 1976. GLACIER FALLS also had a restaurant with decent food, and I ate there many times. GLACIER FALLS was so 70'S Orange County!

In the last couple of months, I had just been thinking about that it would be great to see some of the old Rink Rats, But of course, where are they and does anyone know where anyone would be???
To the persons keeping this going, a very big THANK YOU.
For some info:
Chuck and Cece Marsalisi (if no one already knows) have divorced some years ago. Chuck lives up in Washington state and still works with the police dept.
Tracy Morgan (the surfer dude with the shorts)had gone up to the state of Washington as was an officer with Chuck. Tracy was there for a short time and came back home back to Huntington Beach. He is back working for the Fountain Valley School dist transportation dept.
Tom and Jennifer Schrieber moved to the Hawaiian Islands many years ago. If anyone that may still have some contact with them is Joyce Banks and/or Patty Schacht.
There maybe some others that I may know about but unfortunitly do not remember at this time.
Again, thanks to Sandy and Kenny.

I took lessons starting in 1972. I skated for a couple of years in classes but dropped because my dance and gymnastics took over my life. In 1978 I returned to the rink. I took private lessons for a while but also came to skate at many of the sessions. I started coming more frequently as I grew into my teen years. Had a boyfriend at the rink for a while. My mother would always come with me. I had my first real injury at the rink as well. I feel out of a lay-back spin during a day session. I loved coming to the rink. I stopped going about 1981. I had a professional photographer take photos of me at one point because I was trying for an acting career and was trying to show my various different abilities. It was always like a family and I was devastated the day it closed. I still have my old "Rink Rat" shirt and button. I also have my old Glacier Falls skate bag that I proudly carry my skates in to this day. I would love to attend the reunion.

Oh my --- the years that I skated were when the Disneyland area was over-run on weekends by sailors and Marines: A girl could have been absolutely ugly and still had a flock of boys around her for attention. (I was *not* ugly; I was a decent skater.) Our dad was dying, and my older brother and I started skating (he had a car) just to get out of the house.
I remember "couples only" when the lights went down and the the mirrored balls reflected from the ceiling. Someone would always ask me to skate, and the twirling colored spots on the ice made me feel I was flying. My favorite song was "Love is Blue."
I skated there in college, too, as a PE course from Cal State Fullerton! On slow nights at my pharmacy job in Anaheim, I practiced my routine, running and sliding on the floor, executing turns on my toes and launching into the air for my jumps. If anyone saw me through the windows, I never heard about it, but I was a show-off and would not have cared.
I grew up, got married and moved away, but happened to drive down Katella as Glacier Falls was being demolished. I could have wept, seeing the ribbed arched ceiling partially knocked down, twisted metal that now looked so small. It brought back memories of damp frosty air that stung my cheeks, the wonderful feel of newly sharpened skates, the raspy sound of touching my speed skate blade behind me to scare slow skaters, waiting for the Zamboni to resurface the ice, drinking hot chocolate and remembering bruises on my hips and hands from how hard the ice was under me when I fell. I wonder how many of the boys I skated with --- looking for a girl to touch and hold before shipping off to Vietnam --- lived to go back to their own homes. Glacier Falls was a long, long time ago.

My sister and I spent lots of time there in the early to mid 60's. We both took lessons. My instructor was also the clown for the Ice Follies. The first thing he taught was how to fall and the back bend to touch your head to the ice and stand back up.
My sister would have me practice with her allot. there was one move where she was laying on her back and I was to skate over her grab her hands to pull her up in front of me. The problem was the she was bigger than I was. I made a full lap around the rink so I was moving litte fast. As soon as I grab her I was flat on my back and only moved her a couple of inches. So when it came to doing things like that we switched who was to pick up the other.
Had lots of good times and was there for most of the Saturday night shows. I don't remember the names of father/daught team that was there most of the time.

Left Hughes in 1993 after working there for 17 years to stay home with the kids. Sold a house in Westminster in 1991 and moved to RSM. Been here ever since. Lost my Mom in 1995 (same year as Gene) and lost my Dad in 1998. Wow a few rough years. Still married to Dave (since August 1981) even after going through 3 teenagers and we have 2 grandkids - Haley 6 and Brenden 4. Working for the Public Defender's office in Orange County and loving life. Short paragraph for so many years, but hey will fill you in at the reunion.
