Hi,
I just found your extensive website, and am hoping one of your researchers might be able to help me. I have an early resident of Wilkes County GA Peter Smith, who I am attempting to trace. There seem to have been two Peter Smiths in this area of Georgia. My ancestor was Peter Smith who married Hannah Elsberry on 25 Mar 1794 in Oglethorpe County, GA
Will for Oglethorpe Co., GA - bk B. page 146 Peter Smith
Dated 29 Jan 1818.
Wife Polly. Gifts to Uncle Wm Smith & to Aunt Mary Smith.
To my two daus. Sally & Nancy, ant to my aged mother Sally
Smith. To my daus. Lucinda Pettigone & Betsy Smith. To
my dau. Polly Felton. To dau. Betsy Smith when my dau.
Sally & dau. Hulda come of age, who are my two youngest.
Exrs: John Hitchcock, Polly Smith & wife.
Wit: Isham Goss, Matthew & James Gallaway.
I think the Lucinda Pettigone is actually Lucinda Pettigrew who married Ebenezer Pettigrew on 27 mar 1816 in Oglethorpe Co, GA
Wilkes County, GA
By 1826: Philip H. Burford gave receipt as administrator of the estate of PETER SMITH, in right of Hannah, daughter of Michael Elsberry, deceased.
The boundaries of the counties in Georgia at this period were changing frequently, being divided as population increased, etc. So this is the same area.
Early land grants
Early land grants in the area of Wilkes County that later became part or all of Oglethorpe

There was a Reverend Peter Smith who appears to have been the founder of a Baptist Church in the area, but he was of an earlier generation. (Adult minister by 1784)I haven't found proof of the relationship of the two Peter Smiths yet. Certainly looks like a possible family connection.
In a book, 1784-1984 Bicentennial Celebration Greenwood Baptist Church, Amity Community, Lincolnton, Georgia"
Historical notes compiled by Hazel Bentley Eubanks.
"In the following year, 1784, Upton's Creek Church was constituted. This was situated in the lower part of Wilkes (County, Georgia), and went by the name of Upton's Creek for some time, but upon building a new and convienient
Meeting-house some miles below, in a pine wood, thus surrounded by evergreens, it received the style of Greenwood, by which it is still known. By whom this
Church was founded we do not know, but doubtless it was constituted of members from Kiokee Church, and formed under her auspicies. Here the Reverand Peter Smith was settled soon after the war (Rev. War) closed, and and it is altogether probable that he was instrumental in the formation of the Church. --- he was the first Pastor. In short time, however, Mr. S. (Smith) removed to the state
of Ohio, where he ended his earthly career."
1784 - Church instituted. Peter SMITH Pastor (Church originally named Upton's Creek Baptist Church)
1788 - Pastor: Peter SMITH; Messengers: Hezekiah BUSSY, John BENTLEY, John CHANDLER
1792 - Pastor: Peter SMITH; Messengers: Balaam BENTLEY
1793 - Pastor: Peter SMITH; Messengers: Balaam BENTLEY
1798 - Pastor: William GREEN; Messengers: Balaam BENTLEY
Would any of your researchers have information on either of these Peter Smiths living in Wilkes County Georgia between 1784 (first land record) and 1818/1826 (from will date and date of administration). The older clearly a Baptist minister, who the church history book indicated moved to Ohio. If they were not father and son, perhaps they were Uncle and nephew. I just don't know. Any help, corrections or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Harry's last surviving relative, grandson Lee Jones (b. 7-17-1922), has good information on his branch of your family. Harry's mother was Mary White Smith (b. 9-15-1837)and his father was Howard Malcom Jones. Harry's family was included in my first book and Lee takes great pride in sharing that his grt. grdfthr wrote "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Enjoyed your site.....I'm also researching the Smith family, two branches as a matter of fact. The first branch is of Elisha & Margaret (Matthews) Smith, both b. in CT. They were m. 1794 in CT, their first three children, Sherman, Clark Austin and Betsey were all b. in CT. Their fourth child, Major, was born in Onondaga County, NY. The family migrated to Springfield, Clark Co., OH in 1811. Elisha was an artificer in the War of 1812-1814. He and his wife both died in 1814, months apart. Their children came to Clarksfield/New London, Huron Co., OH in 1815.
The second Smith family that I'm researching are mostly around the Fremont/Helena, Sandusky County, OH areas. The lines there are: Isaac & Levissa Smith> Orrin Orange L. & Sarah Ellen ORY> Harry Orrin & 1st. wife (still living); 2nd. Lizzie S. (PRESLEY)> Harry Allen & (still living)> Harry Franklin Smith.

Inspiring website!
I am searching for the family of my great-grandmother Josephine Anna Smith ( married Christian Warweg/ Indianapolis). She was from Shelbyville, IN....daughter of Isaac Smith and Harriet Updegraaf.
She died: January 1, 1918/19 ( of the flu epidemic in Indianapolis).
Does the Isaac Smith + Harriet Updegraaf union ring any bells in Shelbyville Indiana? That family was described as "Quaker & Penn Dutch"...that may be hearsay.
Thanks,
Amber

Your site is FANTASTIC. My husband's grandfather was descended on his mother's side from Peter Smith and Esther Mitchell, through Hezekiah (Sarah) Smith, Peter (Catherine Stout) Smith, etc. I have a small book "The Genealogy of the Descendants of Smauel Smith, Sr. and Elizabeth (MCleave) Smith" by John Peery Miller, his grandson, printed in 1922. According to this, Rev. Peter Smith was born in Wales, Feb. 6, 1753, the soon of Dr. Hezekiah Smith.I am looking for any help anyone can give me.

Wow! I am impressed with the amount of information that you have on the Smith's! I have been researching my Smith line in Clark County and have been trying to find some connection to Rev. Peter Smith but have not had any success. My Jeremiah Smith came from New Jersey to Clark County around 1818 but he settled in Harmony Township. Jeremiah was born 25 March 1780 and died in Harmony Twp., Clark County on the 8th of July 1849. My early Smith's are buried in the Lisbon Cemetery in Harmony Twp.
Keep up the good work!
Carol

Hi
Would be very interested if any of the above born around the revolutionary war were Loyalists. I am working on a Cornelius Born: about l750 born in New York State according to family. They were originally from England according to a newspaper written in early l900's. Since there were not enough ships leaving for the new world (at the time of the crossing of the Mayflower) many stayed behind in Germany or The Netherlands - as much as ten years and finally came out
to Mass in the l600's. Does anyone know about this, or about any of the smiths as Loyalists. Appreciate any info
Thanks Jennie

I don't know whether you are my line or not but you do sound familiar. My ancestery came from the U.S. to Canada and I am researching Cornelius Smith original name on the records was Smythe. Older relatives have records that Cornelius Smith (my line) was born in New York State around l750. My Grandmother said they were all related that came as Loyalists to Elizabethtown in Upper Canada (Now called Brockville, Ont. Leeds Co. An old newspaper comment by Riley Smith said that the Smith family were born in England, went to Germany(I suspect this is Holland) were Puritans, and a lot were Quakers, then they came to Mass. some onto Conn. Vt. N.Y. and then to Canada. Riley was born in l8l0 and the paper was in the l900's. If I find any connection with your names or anything else I'll let you know.

Also have John Medcalf who m Mary Smith, d/o Peter Smith,
John, brother to William Medcalf & also s/o George & Elizabeth Spink Medcalf (do not have decendants here).
Medcalf data from manuscript "Medcalf Family from Maryland to Kentucky", Filson Club Library, Louisville, Ky. Some data has been co-oberated, some not. I do know there is data relating to Peter Smith in St Marys Co early 1700s. Years ago a man (Smith surname) from Tex sent me a few pages from early records of St Marys Co. I do not have access to Md records here in Illinois, so can not substantiate it.
IF any of this sounds familiar to you- would love to hear from you.

Do you know anything about Ann Smith b. 1824 on LI and married to Abijah H Woolley. They moved from LI to Chautauqua County NY. Abijah's aunt, Nancy Woolley, md Peter Smith 5 Jul 1794 in Coram. Peter's bro Jonathan had 6 sons and 1 dau born between 1816 and 1829. I wonder if the dau is Ann? Peter's father is Jesse Smith b. 1754 md to Rachel Benjamin.
Any ideas?
Thanks
