D.O.B: July 28, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee to John and Rachel Rhoden (according to Death Certificate)
D.O.D. December 15, 1937 in Savannah, Ms, buried in Isabelle Cemetery in Louisiana.
Marriage: Listed as Robert E. Raden, Married Bertie Mae Rester, Washington Parrish, Louisiana, on December 6, 1912. (Original Marriage certificate lost/unavailable)-from table of Louisiana marriages 1718-1925
Listed on 1920 Census in Louisiana as Robert E. Roden, Birthplace Tennessee, Father's Birthplace Virginia, and Mother's birth place Virginia.
Listed on 1930 Census in Louisiana as Robert Rhoden, Birthplace Tennessee, Father's birthplace Tennessee, Mother's birthplace Tennessee.
DNA Testing links us to the family line of Hezekiah Rhodes, born 1660 on the Isle of Guernsey (England).
Exact Y-DNA match with a Rhodes in Virginia in 12 and 25 Marker Test, Genetic Distance of 1 in the 37 Marker Test. Contacted Mr. Rhodes in Virginia. He has done research on all branches of the family except for one person who left Virginia to seek his fortune in Missouri). Haven't corresponded with Mr. Rhodes in the past few months.
Family story: Robert Ervin showed up in South Mississippi/Louisiana in about 1910-1911. Two or three men came with him to the area. According to family information/legend, my Grandfather would not talk about his past and did not want his picture taken. There is only one picture of him that we know about and it was taken at a distance. A Mr. Farmer, who came with him, said that my Grandfather was a Texas Ranger that he had to kill a man in the line of duty. Apparently the man's family was out to kill my Grandfather. Their company commander/leader, told my Grandfather he needed to leave Texas or he would be killed by the family (we can't confirm this story, I checked with the Texas Ranger research and they could not find any record of him). We are pretty sure he did kill someone because my Dad said that at one time his older brother became very mad at someone and threaten to kill him. My Grandfather talked to him and told him that was no way to settle anything because he knew first hand from having to kill a man and living with it the rest of his life.
My Grandfather boarded with my Grandmother's Parents. In 1912 he married my Grandmother, his age about 44 and Grandmother was about 15 (if research information is correct). He died in 1937, when my Dad was about 14.

William Garner b. in the Carolinas abt. 1820, very little known, but do know wife was ELIZABETH COX. He died in GA at a daughter's home, and LIZ supposedly went on to TX w her daughter and son. The name ANSLEY/ANGSLEY has come up and do not know if that is his first or last name. They went to ERATH CO. in about 1840 (rough estimate). I think your site is very interesting, quite a lot of good reading.
I am looking for my gggggrandfather's wife. She was called Susanna Rhodes and she married on 1 Sept 1778 to Robert Medland in Paignton, Devon, UK. I believe she was born in 1751 and Robert in 1754 but not in Paignton. I think Robert might have come from Exbourne in Devon. Not a lot to go by I know, but if anyone does know anything about Susannah I would be really pleased to hear from them. It's terrible when you get stuck and don't seem to be able to get any further.

I believe most of my ancestors lived in or around Pennsylvania. I have found that my GGGGG Grandfather came from Ireland in 1745 and was a lt. in the Revolutionary War. His name was William Thompson I, then William Thompson II, then William Thompson II, then James Thompson, then Joshuway Thompson and finally my Grandmother Clara Marian Thompson who married Lowery Rhodes. Found your site but not sure if my family are from United States. I am from England and my maternal Grandmother was Jane Elizabeth Garner and her parents were William Garner and Caroline Garner. My mother Doris Briggs (and married to Leonard Stansfield) was born in 1911 and is now deceased but was the youngest of 3 daughters her sisters being Caroline and Elsie. I believe there was a Jewish connection(people think I look Jewish - as others in the family do) although this seems to have been hidden in the family, perhaps fear of persecution in the past. Something was once mentioned long ago but I cannot remember exactly.

I just went through your Rhodes family site and found it very touching. I have tons of information on my Maguire side of the family through research over the past 15 years. I just started working on my mothers side of the family the Veronee's. My grandfathers sister Beatrice born in the early 1890's married a gentelman by the name of M.C. Rhodes of Ellenville, N.Y. She died in 1977 in Ellenville. She had three daughters. I see your connection with Hattiesburg Ms. My wife has family from Hattiesburg, Laurel and Pascougula, and Sumrall. She was a Sumrall.

I live in central Pa. My Mother was a Rhoades, and I have verified my branch of the Rhodes back to 1850 through census records. Some of the earlier info is sketchy. I have some info on Jacob Rhodes 1795-1800, but not sure I have the right Jacob Rhodes. William M. My name is Fred L. Sanborn, Sr., born November 22, 1897 in Pueblo, Colorado. My father was Burr Flag Sanborn. My mother was Hattie Rhodes. I am writing this story in case some of my grandchildren would like to know about their ancestors-maybe some wouldn’t care one way or the other.
That I am writing about is just what I heard when I was a young boy. I have never tried to check the records to see if what I heard was true or just idle gossip…so anyway, here goes.
THE RHODES
Now for the Rhodes branch of the family… I don’t know when they migrated to this country from Scotland. I never knew my Mother’s Dad or Mother since they passed away before I was born. All I know is what my Uncle Grant told me as he was the oldest son. There was 4 boys and 3 girls in the family. I picked up their lives in St. Joseph, Missouri at the end of the Civil War. They decided to migrate to Colorado and homestead some land. They traveled in a covered wagon. Some of the boys road horseback and I guess some of the girls did too at times. It must have been something….Mother, Father and 7 children! It took them about two weeks to make the trip.
This is one incident that Uncle Grant used to tell me about. It was during the time when there were a lot of outlaw gangs in the middle west…the James Boys, the Younger Boys and the Dalton Gang. Anyway, the Rhodes were camped near a small stream in eastern Colorado when three men road up. Grandpa Rhodes asked them to have a cup of coffee, so they did and then decided they would spend the night because they didn’t know when they would find another stream. One of the men said “you might not want us here when you find out we are three members of the Dalton Gang.ö Grandpa said, “We don’t turn anyone away from water, so you’re welcome to stay.ö Well, they did stay and the next day when the Rhodes were ready to move on, the Dalton Boys said, “We will ride along with you.ö Along towards midafternoon, a bad thunder and rain storm came up. They were near a farm that had a large barn so they stopped and asked if they could drive into the barn until the storm was over. The farmer was going to turn them down but the Dalton Boys told the farmer they would burn the “damn placeö down if he refused to let the family and kids use the barn. Anyway….he did let them use his barn!
The next day the Dalton Boys said goodbye since they were going up to a mining town and the Rhodes continued on toward Pueblo. As they got near Pueblo, they started looking for some land they wanted to homestead on. They found a place on the Huerfano River, about 20 miles east of Pueblo and went to the land office to file on it.
Oh, one thing I want to mention before we leave the Dalton Boys…When my sister, Vera, was 18 years old, she married a boy whose name was Dalton. Now whether he was related to one of the Dalton Boys, I don’t really know. Vera had a daughter, Lois, by him who now lives in California. We correspond once in awhile. My sister died in her twenties.
Grandfather and Grandmother Rhodes only lived a few years in Colorado when they passed away. Then Uncle Grant was left with the job of raising 6 brothers and sisters.
Here are the Rhodes children and what happened to them…
Uncle Grant ran the ranch with the help of the family. He didn’t marry until he was 30 years old and then he married a woman who weighed 220 pounds. I guess love is blind! He was small like me and only weighed about 140 pounds. Her name was Lidia. She was always good to me. She didn’t want to live in the country because she was a city girl. She liked to drive a nice horse and buggy around to visit friends and relatives. After all the rest of the children were grown, Uncle Grant traded the ranch for a lot of city property. They had no children.
The next oldest boy was Erwin. He was a little runt and his nickname was Banty….like a Banty Chicken. I guess you’ve never heard that expression! He carried the name Banty until he passed away. He was the last one to go. He married but had no children.
Then the next boy was Fred. He is the one I was named after. When he was in his late teens, he went hunting one day with a 22 rifle. He crawled through a barbed wire fence and when he pulled the rifle through after him, the rifle exploded accidentally. He was shot through the jaw and he must have had his mouth open as the bullet went through both cheeks. Doctors tried skin grafts but they never took. He spent the rest of this life with a bandage circling his face. He never married and died when he was 32 years old.
Then there was Walter. He was blind. I don’t know if he was born blind or if he was blinded from an accident. He died shortly after their Dad and Mother passed away. Poor Uncle Grant!
Now the girls…Mary was the oldest. She married a man named Mitchell and had one daughter named Mary after her. The daughter is still alive and lives in Seattle, Washington. She is 4 years older than me and although I haven’t seen her since I was 16 years old, we still correspond. She had two daughters and both married wealthy husbands. Since this story was written, my cousin Mary passed away.
Then there was Myra. She married a man name Rayburn and they had 1 son, Don, no daughters. Don and I was very close when we were young, but they are all gone now.
My mother, Hattie, was the youngest. All three sisters married within 3 years. I guess after Uncle Grant and Aunt Lidia moved to the city, the girls married fast to get away from Aunt Lidia.
There are no Rhodes left now. They are all gone since there were no male descendants.
I have found some information to possibly back up some of what he wrote. Here is an outline of what I have put together:

Fred RHODES, died Aug 21, 1911, in Pueblo, Colorado
Was shot in the face as a teenager on a hunting trip, never fully recovered from his wounds. May have been addicted to morphine, see article below.

It seems forever since I started the search for my 4Xgr. grandfather. He was "General" George Rhodes, I don't know where he got the title "General". He was born in the early 1700's in England. One family source says Middlesex near Harrow. He came to America in 1745 with his wife and one brother. He had 5 children; Eugene, Susie, Polly, Daniel, and William.
