Mr. Richard F. Gaines died suddenly at his home near Ripley on the night of the 12th inst. Mr. Gaines at the time
of his death was 63 years old. He had been a resident of Lauderdale county forty-five years and was numbered
among her most honorable and upright citizens. He was buried at Asbury church on Friday evening the 12th.
In the absence of the regular pastor, Rev. P.H. Fields, Rev. R.W. Hood of Ripley conducted the funeral exercises
in a most solemn and impressive manner and if it be true, as the poet has declared, that,
"To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."
..then Mr. Gaines is not dead, for the many sorrowing friends at his funeral showed that his memory is embalmed
in the hearts he left behind. He was a member of the Methodist church for nearly a half century, and in his death the church and community as well as his sorrowing wife and relatives have sustained an irreparable loss. He will always be remembered by the county with respect and affection for his man admirable qualities heart and head, and for his high christian manners. He raised and educated fourteen orphans children, all of whom now since he is gone, rise up and call him blessed. He was unpretentious, earnest, liberal in his charities, faithful to his obligations and had an exalted idea of duty in all the relations of life. Though he died almost without warning, his faithful wife was at his bedside and went with him down to where our finite section of time meets the infinite. So he died a strong, genial, generous man, though not without some faults and weaknesses. He is no more, but his memory will live among his friends in the history of Lauderdale when we all sleep the sleep that knows no waking.

I'm confused - the comment seems to suggest JHP's ancestry is not known to you. Surely this is not so! I am looking for my paternal grandmother Laura Elizabeth Bonner. She was left in Jacksonville, Illinois, and was railsed by the Iles family. As a matter of fact, she was called Laura Iles and never knew her true last name was Bonner until she was going to marry my grandfather, Glenn Arthur Large, and was told that her real last name was Bonner. She was born on August 19,1884, supposedly in or arround Carlyle, Illinois, and she died on December 17, 1924, in Jacksonville, Illinois. She and Glenn had one son, Arthur James Large on November 10, 1909. He died on August 3, 1994. Arthur married Anna Emelie Meyer on June 21, 1931. They were married in Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria, Illinois. Anna was born on September 15,1912, in Perry, Oklahoma, and she died on April 29, 2005, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield. Arthur and Anna had one daughter, Laura Lee Large, in Jacksonville. I have never been able to trace her heritage, but she did have one brother that we knew about. His name was Edward Bonner, and he lived in New Jersey. If anyone has any information about this branch of the Bonner family, I would be happy to know about it.

I descend from Isham Hodges (1750-1796) via his son Edmund/Edmond Hodges and Sarah Pearson Hodges. Their daughter Lucy married Samuel Black. They are my 3rd great grandparents. Samuel and Lucy were in Osborne Co., Kansas for the 1880 census. They died in Osborne Co. and are buried in Osborne Cemetery.

This daughter may have been approx. 18 months old when her parents divorced (her mother subsequently married a senator, we think) and she visited Granville’s second family once in Louisiana when she was approx. 5 years old – probably before 1947. We seem to be cousins, close and distant. So many names to share. Looking just now at the Confederacy links. Reminds me that the surnames Kennon, Sinclair, Whittle and another I'm not sure you have, Thom, were all in the Confederate military. Reuben Tripplet Thom, Jr. in the Confederate Marine Corps at Mobile Bay, his uncle William Alexander Thom surgeon at Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond. Another uncle Cameron Erskine Thom in the Stonewall Brigade,, another Joseph Pembroke Thom, first in the Stonewall Brigade and then in France trying to get help for the Confederacy in France, along with Matthew Fontaine Maury (also another cousin). Captain Arthur Sinclair, his son Arthur on the CSS Alabama, and 5 more Sinclairs of 2 generations in the Confederate Navy. Captain Arthur Sinclair and his brother in law Captain (Commodore as station commander at New Orleans) William Conway Whittle, his son Lt. William Conway Whittle on the CSS Shenandoah. Another cousin, Lt Beverley Kennon, also at New Orleans. His father Captain Beverley Kennon, married was to Britannia Peter. He died when the "Peacemaker" blew up on the USS Princeton. That's just my mother's side. My father's side is intermarried with the Hites and the Maury's. The Ruffner name was first Peter Ruffner entered America in 1732. First settled in what would become Luray, Page Co, VA. The Ruffners lent several of their name to the Confederacy.
