My grandfather's uncle was the local sheriff when he was sent to live in Boliver from Half Way when he was orphaned at 5 years old. The jail was upstairs and my grandfather and uncle and aunt lived downstairs. My grandfather's job was to take the food his aunt Julia prepared upstairs to the prisoners.

Sorry, don't know the exact years. My mother (age 88) tells me the old jail is now a museum, but I couldn't find any mention of it on the Internet anywhere.

Hope to visit Boliver and Half Way soon.

I lived in Bolivar when North Ward was an active school, and though I never attended it my brother and sisters did. It was a sad thing to see it close, but when it reopened as a museum I promised myself I would visit it someday. I finally did in May of this year. I'm glad I did. My congratulations to all who have been involved with the museum since it opened in the early eighties. It is a lovely place and a credit to the city of Bolivar and Polk County.

We were looking for antique Beauty Items and found this site/Museum. My Best Friend came across perm rods used in the old electric perm machines.
Since I am a Hair Stylist she brought them to me to see if I knew what they were. Of course I remembered seeing them in my study books from school and brought it out for her. We found the description and pictures of these scary looking perm rods from 'days gone by'.
I sure am happy times have changed!!!!
If I am ever in Bolivar I will stop in and see your collection of 'Time'

You have a great web site. The photos are very nice and it is great you are able to offer so many publications for sale. It makes me want to visit the museum! My husband's family (Anderson, Neuhart, Roberts, Johnson, etc.) are from Bolivar, Polk County, so the historical information is very interesting to me as I do the genealogical research.
Liz

I am trying to find information for my husband regarding a neglected cemetery in your area called Mahaffey Cemetery. It has many of my husband's ancestors buried there. We attempted to visit it recently, only to find it overgrown and neglected, full of thornbushes, weeds, and plants. It is on private property, we think, but is enclosed in a fence out in a field. Any information regarding its property owners and/or caretakers would be greatly appreciated.

To all who read this guestbook: We hope that you are enjoying the pictures on this site. Please remember that a museum is just a display of historical items. We make no claims to be a place of research but instead a place of remembering by seeing items of yesteryear. This site only showcases a few of the items in the museum. The pictures do not tell the whole story of the museum but yes, it is history--the tangible history of Polk County Missouri that you can look at and hold in your hand and touch. The Polk County Library (public) or the genealogy society's collection is the place to find books and other materials on the families and history of Polk County--the museum is just a display of items. Come to Bolivar and tour the museum--I know everyone will enjoy it.

This is a wonderful website, giving those of us who may not
have a chance to visit Bolivar,a chance to see what the museum has to offer and give us an idea of how our grandparents and other ancestors lived in Polk County. The log cabin could have belonged to many families, I have photos of my Gr.Grandfather's home near Halfway and it looks very similar.
