Hi,
While surfing I came across your site and would like to ask a question re ships to N.S. I am trying to locate the passenger list of the Unicorn, a steam-vessel that made its inaugural trans-Atlantic voyage from Liverpool on May 16 1840 and arrived at Halifax on the 29th. A day later it left for Boston arriving there on June 03. Do you know if a list exists?

All the best from Toronto.

i am trying desperately to locate a ship that was lost at sea sometime between 1873-1880. my great, great grandfather john curry of falmouth hants county nova scotia formally from hlfx area was aboard in a working capacity. stories through family say the ship was called the black coffin which i think was an exaggeration and also a ship hope came to mention. i feel he would have been on a ship either from falmouth or windsor or hantsport as they were very close to where he lived. he fathered my great grandmother elizabeth jane curry born 1873 and she never seen her father so his demise happened in the time frame i listed. his widow,s name was agness amelia curry who later married alonzo wise from falmouth ns. john curry , my great, great grandfather was born in 1838. he and agness had thomas, john, emma, aleanor maryanne martha and elizabeth together . i am the last living member of my immediate family and am trying to leave a sense of our roots recorded for my chidren and grandchildren. any help would be appreciated.also story has it the ship sailed from nova scotia and went down somewhere near bermuda. thanls , linda

I just found this site and am so excited about it BUT it is late and I can hardly see as I have been working all day on my Knowlton/Dickinson genealogies from Nova Scotia. I am bookmarking it and will be early in the morning. My ancestors stories fascinate me and I am so grateful to the volunteers who donate so much time and effort to putting them on line. Thank you all, Elaine

This is a long shot but I am looking for the record of a multiple murder (axe) in Millbrook (West New Annan) or on Cooper's Road nr Tatamagouche. It allegedly took place in the 1840s or, more likely, the 1850/60s. My only reference to it is from a letter and it is referred to as Grandma Bonnyman and the murderer.

Once here, I am very interested in any information regarding the family, befores and afters, and information regarding Capt William Cunningham whose ancestor Daniel came from Scotland; clarification of the his wife Jane Smith's and his mother Mary/Mercy(?) Smith's pedigree, siblings, etc which both, I currently believe, trace to Archelaus Smith and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Otherwise, the site has a lot of information to sift through - a resource for nonCanadians unfamiliar with Nova Scotia. A map with the current counties would prove helpful to this researcher. Excellent pictures. A great place to lose one's self for an afternoon or more.
Congratulations!

Hi

I am trying to rearch my Family Tree, with little or no success! I would appreciate any/all help in this direction. I think my downfall at the moment has been that I have not been looking in the right places! Never mind I will carry on and hope I strike gold soon.

All the very best.

I really like you idea of this clips and snips. I did not find anything I was looking for here but I think it is a great idea anyway. I was looking for a John Flynn that was born in Newfoundland and moved to Cape Bretton sometime before the birth of his first born child. He married Winnifred Doyle. She was also born in Newfoundland. I am not sure if they got married in Newfoundland or Cape Bretton, but I am sure that their daughter Helen Flynn was born in Nova Scotia on June 24th 1913. She married Harvey (Valade) DeLaval. They had 2 sons. Helen died April 27th 1942 leaving both her young sons behind. In 1942 they lived with their mothers parents at 175 prince street Sydney, Nova Scotia. I dont know what happened to their father,(Harvey). Rumor has it he was in a German war camp and was released years later. I have found it really hard searching this family, do you have any idea's. Is there any volunteer genealogist's in Cape Bretton that I could get help from.
Thanks in Advance.

Enjoyed your site, well worthwhile persevering and good luck with it. I was surfing everywhere to see if I could get a line on Jane DORMAN supposedly born c. 1841 in Nova Scotia, father born Nova Scotia, mother born Wales, both names as yet unknown. I know her history vaguely after marrying Thomas Drake HORTON in Michigan c. 1875 but don't know their dates of death or anything further about Jane's ancestors. So, if you ever hear of them.....I'll be listening hard!

I am very interested in finding a list of names of the members of Chasseurs Brittaniques/Canadian Chasseurs, French soldiers during Napoleon's time who were captured by the British and served under them during the War of 1812 against the US, and were subsequently discharged in Halifax in 1813 (in disgrace, unfortunately!)

Could you please tell me the name of a newspaper in Halifax in 1813 which might have printed this list? I note your index starts in 1817 and assume that it goes no further back than that date.

Thank you for any help you may be able to give me.

Anyway, keep up the good work, it must be a true labor of love. I will drop in on your page on occasion to see what's new.

My maternal grandfather and his family landed in Halifax 18-Dec-1905. They were aboard the ship SS Corinthian that had sailed from Liverpool, England. My grandfathers mother died aboard ship, leaving his father with a young family. Philip Schlittenhardt, my grandfather was the oldest age 8, Christina age 5, Johannes age 3. and Magdalena and infant. Father was Johannes Schlittenhardt age 32 nd his wife was Fredericka age 28. I would be interested in anything you find on them. How can I go about getting the complete ships manifest? I have heard they were all hospitalized. Thanks for your time!

Dear Susan,

I am writing concerning your webpage for the Acadian Recorder. In the May 3, 1817 entry under Snips and Clips who list gentlemen who were appointed by "His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor with the advice of His Majesty's Councl...to be Commissioners to superintend the repair of roads and bridges throughout the Province the present year, and in such service to expend the sums of money set opposite to their names respectively. " You state that if I want the particular area and / or road assigned to email you with the name, well I was wondering if you could look up Jesse Lewis. I would be greatful for any help.

Yours truly,

Hi. I'm new to genealogy and recently found out that there are ancestors from NS in my background. I never knew my grandparents and even my parents never gave me any information so I am starting from scratch. Names of interest are Abner Woodworth, M. to Susan Selfridge with at least one son by the name of Laurie or Lawrence Clifford Woodwoth born Nova Scotia abt.1878. Am looking for any Woodworths that can be connected. These names were take from the marriage license. Lawrence would be my grandfather on my mothers side. I realize you probably are getting more info than you need from me but am so grateful for any snippet of information. I'm 64 years old and would really like to know before I die where I came from. The work you are doing is very much appreciated. I did Gleen a Woodworth from your listing and maybe I'll find more. Thanks soo much.

Hello,

Thank you! Thank you!
I am finally getting around to researching another one of my ancestral lines and in typing in Nicholas Wright, I came up with your site. You have extracted from the Acadian Recorder the estate notice for Charles Wright, the administrators being Henry Wright, Nicholas Wright and Enoch Wiswell. I am assuming at this point that Henry and Nicholas are Charles' sons. That at least gives me a clue in order to confirm (or not) that this is true and to put me back another generation. Thank you for that.
In going to the library today and consulting "Births, Burials and probate of Nova Scotians 1800-1850", I found Charles death for November 28, 1815 in Halifax. I see that the notice was published in the Recorder on Jan 4, March 1 and May 3, 1817. I believe this had to be done as part of due process, is that correct? In addition to what you have typed in each of these three places (ie the estate, administrators and original date published,) could you tell me if there was anything else in the notice?
Again thank you. Keep up the good work.

My grandmother, Luce (or Lucie) Chiasson was born in Inverness, I believe, around 1890, I think. Her father was obviously a Chiasson and I think her mothers maiden name was Shomphe. I'm very interested in tracing this side back further. Anyone have any information for me?! Thank you !

My grandfathers name was Walter Herbert Jones from England in 1914 to Nova Scotia, and lived there till his death in 1964 at Halifax Funeral Home. This looks like a great site. Thanks. Gwynn.

I'm looking for a great (?) grandfather named J.M. Bell. He was born in 1812 or 12 in Halifax. My grandmother said that her dad Bell could explain the relationship to a William Deliverance Seaborn Martin and that they thought the family came from Canada. (She also thought there was some relationship to Alexander Graham Bell - like cousins). I am excited to find your site and hope to find some clues here. The Bell grandpas died fairly young and it has been hard tracking them. Thank you for all your hard work getting this information on line. I appreciate being able to surf to find this information. I went to the St.Famille grave site yesterday to see the newly erected plaque in memory of those buried there, and noticed that the date stated for that cemetary is 1722-1755 and that there are well over 300 dead there. This does not make sense to me how so many could be there in such a short time.I was under the belief that the acadians were in that area as early as 1600 and there is documentation of this. This peticular land site was owned by a Mr.kochanoff how sold it for building lots. This is another thing that troubles me greatly. In fact one home owner while starting their construction actually dug up bones...It was well known in Falmouth that this land was a cematary...I hope to see more Acadian information on the web and acurate information along with it.Building on burial grounds must not take place.Thank you for your wonderful site.

I just found your site--it is very interesting. Since we are in P.E.I. and have no access to the Acadian Recorder, any information we can find is very helpful. I know what a time consuming job you have undertaken and I commend you for all you are doing to help other researchers. Our main family is the Himmelman/Himelman family from Eastern Passage and many descendants (DeYoung, Cleary, Watson, Hawkins) etc.
Thank you for your valuable effort!

I am looking for information on my maternal great grandmother, her maiden name was Hannah J.Spicer. My grandmother did not know what the "J" stood for as Hannah died in my grandmothers infancy. Hannah J. Spicer(born Nov 12, 1883 and died January 19, 1910) married my great grandfather Guildford Benjamin Brown(born Feb 2, 1970 and died Feb 15, 1965) on December 3rd, 1902.They had 3 children-Arnold William Brown (born July 26, 1903and died April 1, 1920), Dudley Guildford Brown (born Aug 5, 1905 died Jan 13, 1979) and my grandmother, Alda Tryphenia Brown (born July 13, 1907-died January 29th, 1997).

Great job! Will be checking back often for updates. Thanks so much for doing this site. Anything on line makes doing research so much easier for me. It is difficult to get to NS and NB to search the records.

You have a great site! I am trying to locate someone researching PURCELL in the Halifax and Purcell's Cove Road area. Specifically, I'm interested in John Joseph PURCELL and Eliza STEPHENS PURCELL. who lived in that area from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Any information would be appreciated.

This is a great gift.Maybe I won't find the ancestor I've been searching for for over a year but I've already got a clearer feeling about what it might have been like to live aand sail in those days. It's the first time I've seen any info from 1817 which is the year my great grandfather arrived in St John,I think.Thank you. This is just what I've been looking for!!! What a great job you're doing!!!

I was looking for info from 1821 newspapers on a ship from Antrim Ireland wrecked off Sable Island in 1821. William and Hannah (Currie) Ramsay/ey and their 8 children. Spent 4 weeks on Sable Island until being rescued and brought to Halifax. I'll keep watching to see if this shows under "Snips and Clips".
Thank you so much.

What a great resource this site will be for people like me who don't have time at present to get the microfilms and search through copies of old newspapers. I admire you greatly for sharing this info with the rest of us. While I didn't find anything that relates to my search yet I will continue to visit the site and hope to someday get some more info. Thanks.

This site is fantastic. I had a bookmark for Halifax Cemetary listings, and went back to check for information on geneology. I am from Halifax. I used to ask my mother about the events on this site and descriptions of them.
With her descriptions and the photo's on this site, the past events she lived through came to life much more.
Fantastic site
Thank you so much.

Seeking information on my grandfather, George A. McKereghan and his father, Robert B. McKereghan. George was born ~1850-1860's, possibly in Halifax. Very little family information about Robert Bruce McKereghan. Find your site very good and will continue to visit it for updated information. Appreciate any help you might provide me in my searching.

This site looks VERY interesting. I've already found many things in the Acadian Recorder through Jean Holder's Vital Stats index but you can be sure I'll be checking this out very carefully for more clues. Thanks so much for this. If there were anything I could do to help in this effort, I'd be most happy to assist. Keep up the good work.
