Thomas Armstrong, a miner, died at Newtonstewart 7th December, 1856. He was the son of John Armstrong a miner and Elizabeth Little. I have very little information about John and Elizabeth but aware that a Thomas Armstrong, (married to a Mary Little) emigrted to Australia on the "David Clarke". I feel that there is a strong possibility that these individuals were related. Can anybody help me out?

Best wishes,

Tom.

Welcome Jessica,

Re Wentz family descendants of Chase County, Nebraska and Dundy County, Nebraska and M. Lucile Watts, born about 1922, NE, daughter of C. Laura Wentz Watts and Ernest R.(Robert) Watts

I presume you found me from our Wentz Family Site. I am eager to here more about your family and if you might know where our matriarch of this line, Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown, might be buried. We have been looking for her descendants but none know of her whereabouts after about 1910. Do you know any members of the Ronzo family? Please tell us all about Lucille Mae, whom she married and possibly if she may still be alive?

Here is what we have on your Wentz and Watts family line.

We have a photo of C. Laura Wentz Bretthauer, as a child about 1900, along with her step-sister Mabel Brown and step-father Lorenzo Brown in our family albumn. If you have family photos you would care to share, I would love to add them to our family albumn.

Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown's first daughter, C. Laura Wentz Bretthauer, born Jan 1893 in Red Cloud, Webster, NE, biological father born WI, would marry in 1909,at age 18, and would reside in Roosevelt, Sioux Co., NE, with her new husband, Ernest R. Watts. The Watts family, parents and siblings, lived in Liberty, Nuckolls Co., NE, as early as 1900.

C. Laura Wentz Bretthauer's future husband, Ernest R. Watts, was the son of George Watts born NY and mother Jennie Watts born France. The George Watts family was residing in Liberty, Nukolls Co., NE as early as the 1900 Federal Census. The Watts household was noted as George Watts, 35, Jennie Watts, 31, Ernest Watts, 11, born Feb 1889, NE, Frank Watts, 8, Elsa Watts, 6, Carrie Watts, 2, Willie Watts, 1. Father George Watts was a farmer. 1910 Federal Census, Liberty, Nukolls Co., the Ronzo family, are neighbors and have some possible family ties to the George and Jennie Watts family. The Ronzo family are noted as John W. Ronzo, age 32, born NE, father born Gremany, mother born Germany, wife Edith M. Ronzo, age 28, born NE, fahter born IN, mother born OH, daughter Zilpha R. Ronzo, age 4, born NE, mother born NE, father born NE.

Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown's daughter, Laura A. C. Wentz Bretthauer, 1910 Federal Census, Roosevelt, Sioux Co., NE, Laura A. C. Watts was noted with her new husband of less than a year, Ernest R. Watts, age 21, working as a general farmer. Laura A. C. Wentz Bretthauer Watts would give birth to their first child, son Milton E. Watts, born about 1914, NE, and daughter Nolma A. Watts, born about 1916, NE. The Ernest R. Watts family would leave Roosevelt, Sioux Co., NE by June 1917, moving to Bussell, Chase Co., NE.

Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown's son-in-law, Ernest Robert Watts, born Feb 18, 1889, Deweese, Clay Co., NE, age 28, registered for the WW I Draft on June 5, 1917, noted as residing in Champion, Chase Co., NE, self-employed as a farmer, and sole support for a wife and two children. Ernest Robert Watts was indicated to be medium in height, medium in build, eyes brown and hair black.

The 1920 Federal Census, Bussell, Chase Co., NE, indicated the Watts household as being Earnest R. Watts, age 30, Laura A. C. Watts, age 27, son Milton E. Watts, age 6, and daughter Nolma A. Watts, age 3 7/12. Ernest R. Watts was employed in general farming. Ernest R. Watts', father and mother, as well as his other siblings, were noted as living in the next door household. The Ernest R. Watts family would leave Bussell, Chase Co., NE for Thayer, Dundy Co., NE by 1930.

Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown's daughter, C. Laura Wentz Bretthauer Watts, 1930 Federal Census, the Watts family has left Bussell, Chase Co., NE, and was noted as residing in Thayer, Dundy Co., NE. The Watts household was noted as Ernest R.(Robert) Watts, age 41, age first marriage 21, born 1889, Deweese, Clay Co., NE, father born NY, mother born France, wife C. Laura Watts, age 38, age first marriage 18, born about 1892, NE, father born US, mother born US, son E. Milton Watts, age 17, born about 1913, NE, mother born NE, father born NE, daughter A. Nornla Watts, age 13, born about 1917, NE, father born NE, mother born NE,

***** and daughter M. Lucile Watts, age 8, born about 1922, NE, father born NE, mother born NE.*******

Ernest R. Watts was employed as a farm laborer. Ernest R. Watts' siblings appear to have returned to Deweese, Clay Co., NE, by death records in current times.

Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown's daughter, C. Laura Wentz Bretthauer Watts may have left Thayer, Dundy Co., NE, returning to Champion, Chase Co., NE, where she is noted to have died in 1961. Do you know when she died and possibly where she might be buried?

Charlotte Louise Wentz Bretthauer Brown's grandson, Milton E. Watts, by daughter, Laura A. C. Wentz Bretthauer Watts, may be Milton Watts, born March 11, 1913, NE, died Nov 1976, San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX. This information has not been verified. Would you know if this is the same Milton E. Watts?

Hoping to hear back from you soon.

Hello THLR,

If you have a male descendant still carrying the Little surname, would you consider participating in our Little DNA project? We would possibly be able to match what line of Little you orginate from. We have had about 112 participants to date. This is not an ancestry.com project but one started privately by Dr. Johnnie Little of Scotland and Harley Little, genealogists of Little family history. It costs about $99 US and it is a simple mouth swab kit they will send you. Your results will be mailed back to you in about two to three weeks. You may remain anonymous as well if you so choose.

Little lines that have been indentified by our Little DNA project to date, where they originated and where they have settled

http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/ancestry.htm

If you would like to join our project

http://www.geocities.com/littlednaproject/join.htm

My line of Little through Little DNA testing has uncovered living Little cousins in Wilstshire County, England, Surry County, VA, USA, and Pitt County, North Carolina, USA.

Our family patriarch, Thomas E. Little, married Ann Elliott of Carlisle, Cumberland, England in 1832. Their first two sons, David and George, would be born in England, before the family immigrated to Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island, USA in 1837.

A male christening for David Little was recorded May 24, 1835, Wetheral, Cumberland, England, noted as father Thomas Little and mother Ann Elliott. A male christening for George Little was recorded September 17, 1837, Wetheral, Cumberland, England, noted as father Thomas Little and mother Ann Elliott.

Thomas and Ann Little, along with their two young sons, left England for America in 1837.

Our line of Little moved across America, residing in Logan County, Illinois and Independence, Buchanan County, Iowa. The Little family continued to move westward, establishing homesteads in Glen Elder, Mitchell County, Kansas by 1871.

Our line of Little would make the final push into Missouri and California by about 1906.

In researching the US census records, Thomas E. Little's children, George and son William James Little, who was born in America, and as well, the grandchildren of Thomas E. Little, have indicated at various times, that their father and/or grandfather was born in England and as well as Scotland.

Thomas E. Little may have been born along the borders region near Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland and Carlisle, England, even though I do not have any record of it.

Thomas E. Little birthdate is taken from his tombstone in Cawker, Mitchell, Kansas where he died February 26, 1880 at age 67 years and two months.

Our line of Little, however, does not match participants to date, of the Little DNA originating from the Borders region and it does not match participants to date, of Little DNA originating from Scotland.

It appears our line of Little may have been transplants, physically born in Scotland and/or near Carlisle, England, but not related to the Little DNA pool of the area.

Out Little descendants have been always clear as to where their mother and/or grandmother was born, but very much in dispute as to where their father and/or grandfather was born.

I assume these children and/or grandchildren were recounting family stories as was told to them as to their family origins in the old country.

If the Thomas Little as noted in the Church of Latter Day Saints records, which records a Thomas Little, born 25 Dec 1811, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 26 Jul 1812, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, the son of David Little, Birth: About 1766, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, and wife Jannet Elliot, Birth: About 1770, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Marriage: 06 Mar 1791, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, then my line would be as follows:

Children of David Little and Jannet Elliot

1. Mary Little Pedigree, Female, Birth: 27 Aug 1791, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 28 Aug 1791, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

2. John Little Pedigree, Male, Birth: 15 Nov 1793, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 17 Nov 1793, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

3. Ann Little Pedigree, Female, Birth: 16 Apr 1796, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 17 Apr 1796, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

4. David Little Pedigree, Male, Birth: 30 Jan 1801, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 08 Feb 1801, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

5. Helen Little Pedigree, Female, Birth: 08 Aug 1803, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 21 Aug 1803, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

6. Thomas Little Pedigree, Male, Birth: 25 Dec 1811, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, Christening: 26 Jul 1812, Hairlawhill, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

Our matriarh's family may have originated in Topknow Head, Scotland:

Matriarch Jannet Elliot, Birth: 11 Sep 1769
Topknow Head Scotland.

A fellow poster sent me the following information as to where Topknow Head is located in Scotland:

I believe you should read Todknowhead. Did you read the letter p from the actual film?

I have been looking at the maps I have access to. I have found Knowhead on an 1832 map within Canonbie parish. Todknowhead is referred to with 18th century dates in a transcription of the Canonbie church memorials so I suspect
the Tod- may have disappeared by the early 1800s. Someone else may have more detail.

Link to:

www.nls.uk/maps/index.html

Select within County maps of Scotland 1580-1832
John Thomson's Atlas of Scotland 1832

Scroll down and select Dumfriesshire
Select SE corner of Map (This will enlarge it and provide facilities to Zoom and Pan)

Zoom In a couple of times
Pan Right a couple of times - in Canonbie Parish.
Zoom in a couple more times.
Pan Right - along border between Canonbie (Scotland) and the county of Cumberland (England) - follow border - till tou come to Crookholm. Knowhead is just to the north. You will see Harelawhill very close as well. When you have been panning right you will have moved from the west of Canonbie town (the Kirk is marked) to the east of it.

I just happened to notice that you were a Little in Iowa and I have been trying to locate information on my Grandparents, William Franklin Little and Nellie (Scott-Lee)of Texas. I understand from stories that they came from Illinois to Texas in 1910 or before but that is all the information I have. I thought you might be a relative. Always looking for my past. Thanks"

Dear Ginny,

The middle name of "Franklin" has not been used for any of our naming, either middle or first names.

In our line living in IA, William James Little, born 1843 RI, resided 1843 - 1861 Newport, RI, Civil War service, Fayette County Iowa 1861 - 1868, Independence County Iowa 1868 - 1871, Mitchell County Kansas 1871 - 1907, and Escondido, San Diego Co., California 1907 - 1928. His occupation has been farmer.

We have a William A. Little, born RI about 1865, the son of George and Ellen Little, whom is the brother to William James Little.

We have found no wives by the name of Nellie, to date, and have no other William Little born in IA.

We have no lines moving into Texas, to date.

I wish we could make a match, but I don't see any leads at this time that could cross our two families.

Thanks for checking by. You never know.

My Jacob Wentz landed NYH 1846, went north to Waterloo County Ontario and in 1880, to the Dakota Territory. Would love to find a connection to your Wentzs.
Ever hear of a Wentz relative in that part of the country?

Dear JoAnn,

If this is your Jacob Wentz noted below, as noted in the 1880 census, I would say we are probably not related.

This Jacob Wentz / Wenz family came into Canada via Russia. My Wentz line is from Reinpfalz, Bayern, Germany and arrived in America, landing in Pennsylvania in 1848, then to KS 1870. So far, we have not found any of our line in any of the Dakota territories.

Go to the Wentz board at genforum,
Wentz's of Devil's Lake, North Dakota and surrounding area

Go to this post by ellenschmand

"Our Wentz family left Germany for Russia and then to the US in the late 1800's. They settled in the North/South Dakota and Nebraska areas. The Nebraska Wentz family is my direct line. They lived in the North Eastern part - Naper."

I believe she might in your line of Wentz/Wenz in the Dakotas.

I wish we could have made a hit. Perhaps, next time!

Hello, I was wondering how in the world you found all that information on your family? The Highest I seem to go is to my great grandfather Oscar Alfred Leopold Von Luedtke. He came over from germany when he was 9 months with his two sisters, mom and dad, and had brothers that died of small pox on the way here... I see that William Luedtke is in your tree, and I was wondering if you just did interviews or hard core research. Please respond if you would like to. Thank you
