DONALD Elizabeth Viper Island/Chatham Island -1940- Dau of Donald. m. Wright

Hello - my name is Andy wild and I am writing on behalf of my mother's partner - Pete Donald. Pete is now 76 and has little detail of his time on Andaman Island and is trying to find out a bit more about his time there. When I was using the internet to help him we came across your website which mentions details about his parents, (his mums maiden name was Haddock)and I was wondering, if at all possible, you have any ideas where we could look to find out more details about his family. If we can help in any way please let us know. Thank you - Andy Wild

"ANDAMAN BOUQUET" by Mrs.D.M.Deakes, my Grandmother, is a wonderous nostralgic collection of poems, that cover not only the family's life from arrival to departure, but also beautiful accounts of places & events, that surely will bring back wonderful memories to anyone who ever spent time in the Amandan Islands, between 1930 & 1941. Soon to be published in the Memoirs section by Barbara.

I was born in Port Blair on the 6th Sept 1941 & was three months old when evacuated from the Island to Bangalore, India where my father's mother lived.

I have only today come across a typewritten collection of poems written by my Grandmother Mrs. M.D.Deakes. They are a beautiful account in poetry of parts of her life in the Andamans.

My mother was Budi Deakes who married Rudi Wilson.

I would therefore like to get in touch with anyone who has any knowledge of the Deakes family even relatives then or now. Many, many thanks.

My maternal grandfather, Lt. Col. Victor Alexander Edge was the Senior Medical Officer of the IMS (Indian Medical Service) at Port Blair in 1932. He was 39 years of age and held a rank of Capt. at that time.

My mother new very little of him but apparently he new about a dozen Indian dialects. While he was in the Andaman Islands, he took an interest in Anthropology.

While he was SMO in Port Blair, he cured a very ill Scandinavian worker from a company working there. I have a copy of the letter from my mother.

In time, I will continue to unravel his story.

Sincerly, David Fielder

Hi. I am surprised to find material of the colonial period in Andamans. I am a grandson of a moplah freedom fighter deported to Andamans from Malabar, Kerala during 1922. I hope you may have materials regarding that period with you. Also, we are working on the Japanese Occupation of these Islands. Can anyone provide me info about Dan McCarthy, who led the spy ring against the imperial forces of Japan in these Islands. I will always remain obliged to you for the assistance. Regards, Zubair.

If e-mailing me direct, please remove the anti spam xxx in my email address. My great grandfather Abraham Chater was the Post Master in Port Blair. My grandfather Herbert Alfred Henry Chater and all his siblings were born there. I am in the process of transcribing the cemetery records for Ross Island and Port Blair. These are held at the British Library in London. The transcription will include letters and documents held with the cemetery file. All the details of the transcription will be published on the Families in British India Society website and also onn my own website. I shall post another note here on this site, when I have completed the task! Best wishes to you all, especially Barbara! Liz.

We had a wonderful holiday in PB in 1997 and hope to visit again shortly. With so many relatives: Boomgardt, Delaney and Whitby buried there, I return to commune with their Spirits and feel completely 'at home'. If anyone has any info about any of the rellies - I would love to hear. Also - Holmes - he knew my Grandmother, I would be very pleased to hear from or of him.
