I was thrilled to find a photo of my mother Blanche Gilbert who was a lady's maid to Ella Mchpherson. My father, Williasm Gilbert was an undergardenerther then which is where my parents met. I was born in 1943 and my brother Alan and I slept at the Grove during the war years when my father was in the RAF in the Azores. The name Fred Weston I remember, and would love to hear from his descendants.

This is a very interesting site. I worked at The Grove in the mid sixties and have found the history fascinating. This was the pre Weinstock management days. In fine weather we used to have post lunch walks on the common.
I moved to Elliots at Borehamwood and still believe the reason that GEC bought them was to get me back!!!!!
I visited the site once more on business in the 80's and really did not recognise the place.
Thank you for all the hard work.

I have a reprinted extract from the Birmingham Daily Post of 6th January, 1872, recording the death of Mr. Joseph Gillott "yesterday afternoon, at his residence, Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, in the seventy-third year of his age".
A second extract from the same paper, dated 15th January, 1872, is headed "Recollections of Mr. Gillott's Pictures", and commences "The probable dispersion by the auctioneer's hammer of this famous collection.....".
As you note an anomaly in the dating of the sale an purchase of The Grove after Gillott's death, you may find that revising the year of his death as stated in your piece (if you find that it would be correct to do so, that is), would resolve the position.
My interest lies in my relationship to the Miss Mitchell, Maria, whom Joseph Gillott married. She was a great-great-great-aunt of mine, and a sister of two other well-known steel-pen makers.
All that apart, I have been extremely glad to learn about the Stanmore estate, of which I knew only very little, and not its whereabouts. Thank you.
C. M. Mitchell.

Well, I never knew Dave Fletcher met the Queen Mother! There he is on the front page, unmistakeable (and so of course is Her Majesty). I started on the lab bench a year after Dave (North Block) - first job out of Uni for both of us (1966 in my case). I was unfortunate enough to see the House gone when I did my second Stanmore stint after returning from Japan. Sad, really. It had seen better days, but it had far more character than the anonymous block that replaced it. What a nostalgia site - thank you!

What an interesting site!!! You have done a great job. I haven't had time to read everything yet but it sure is great stuff. I am in possession of an auction program from October 24, 1860 that pertains to the sale of quite a bit of property located at Great Stanmore and Edgeware Middlesex..belonging to my great, great great Grandfather, Abraham Parsonage. The program describes in detail the houses, outbuildings and land up for auction. Reference is made to property being situate at the SPRING POND and some opposite the CHANDOS ARMS INN.
I would love to know if any of this property remains intact or if a local historian might have photographs of that location???
Would you be so kind as to email me at hferris@hwy16.com
Thank you so much.

I think the people responsible for the demolition of the old Grove house should be ashamed of themselves for the destruction of one of Stanmores most noteable properties.

Through Richard Durrant, who took the tasks and kept others and me informed, I think he done an absolutely fascinating work in finding the History of The Grove and the surrounding ground on the Site. It is intersting to discover the name is English. The Waters came from Ireland or England we think in the 18th century.

Regardless of your comments on your personal page, you have done a MAGNIFICENT job in preserving the history and photographs of this fine house. I stayed home from church :)
and read every page, and when I got to the demolition photos, I about keeled over. HOW SAD! and those men were SMILING :(
My daughter, Erin, is in the undergraduate program for historic preservation at Southeast Missouri State University and I am going to send her the address so that she can read all of your fine research.
My parents and I are going to England for a month at the end of August and I sent my dad the address so that he can peruse your site. He is an artist, writer and historian and
perhaps we will have new to talk about on our trip!
I thank you for all of your hard work and that you followed the principles of research so well --- something for the rest of us to follow.
Sincerely,
---kay

I knew the Brockley Hil Orthopaedic Hospital Roman site and excavated the pottery in adjoining land in the early 1950's, with other young (then) amateurs - but I will always remember one - Tom Dimmick - who seized on a shard in the flowerbeds of the hospital and started tracing the inscribed base - "S" - Ah, we have Sullonicae?
Then came A<N<K<E<Y - Sankey - the builder's merchants of the C20th.
I was born in Pinner and went to Harrow County, as it then was.
I reconstructed some of the pots - I believe they went to Brentford. I still have Roman base with the S for the genuine Sullonicae ware.
Well done on this website.

Sir
I found The Grove a magnificeint adventure planning to return when time presents a more indepth appreciation for a
marvelous journey through the history of The Grove.
My intrest in England stems from researching our paternal
ancestor who it is said is the " son of an Englishman "
who it is doubtful is of such lofty birth as the inhabitants
of The Grove yet it was wonderful to see what my ancestors
had access to viewing there in England.
Thank you .
Respectfully

Hi there,
You've done an excellent job on the research!!! It's amasing that there so much history on my doorstep. My real interest is Roman/Celtic history - that's how I came across your website, when looking at Watling Street links on the web.
Do you have a clear map of Stamore showing all the monuments and sites that you mention ???
Here's a link showing a map of modern Stanmore, maybe you might want to put it on your site

Anyway, keep up the good work and well done!!!!

Finding The Grove was my second great surprise the same day I learned from a terrific lady in England that my great-great-grandmother was not Mary Ann Wright per family story, but Mary Ann MAYERSBACH (b 28 Nov 1849 London; d aft 1915 Eng?), daughter of Charles MAYERSBACH and Harriet Eliza WRIGHT. Charles MAYERSBACH is a descendant of Alexander von MAYERSBACH. Mary Ann MAYERSBACH m/1 William WOOTTON, and per the family story, m/2 a Mr. LAW who was the brother of Andrew Bonar LAW. The story goes that she received a pension from the Crown after Mr. LAW's death. As soon as I learned the real identity of my great-great-grandmother, I searched the web and found your website for The Grove. I can only imagine all the effort, care and time that went into building this labor of love. I salute you for such a wonderful creation and historic work! Thank you. All good wishes from America.

Curiosity compels me to investigate this web site. We received a letter from R. J. Durrant regarding a visit from a Mr. Charrington last September. Unfortunately we have no knowledge of that particular gentleman, but the letter did serve to excite our curiousity about Charrington's in general. We have almost no knowledge of our ancestors and are hoping to find a pathway to them.

I am a cleaner at The Grove and since I am not originally from around here, it was interesting to see the site before the buildings started springing up. It wasn't until the visit to the library in Stanmore that I discovered that the original owner actually came from Banff - an area I am very familiar with as I am from Aberdeenshire too.

I'm biased, as a local, but I think yours is a fanatastic site from the point of view of anyone interested in local history.
I know The Grove, I've lived in Harrow since the early 1970s, but I certainly learnt a lot. The amount of research which has gone into your site must be enormous. Thank you.
P.S. in the 1950s, while in the RAF, I worked at the Marconi site at Woodham Ferrers (sp?) on the development of Doppler radar. Does that ring any bells with you?
Best wishes,
Roy Dent
