As we have been doing our family history work, we have found that Josiah White is my husband's 9th gr-grandfather (1705-1780). He is from Utah and I from NY with no known relatives in NJ. SO it is so exciting for us to find this information. We are hoping to learn more.

They were orphaned in 1917 when their father, Frank Triscik, a Slavic immigrant, was killed in a coal mining accident in Wapello County. Their mother Kitty Leggett Triscik died three years earlier giving birth to her youngest child who also died. The three Triscik children remained very close throughout their lives.

My 2nd great grandparents, Thomas Elwood Osborn and his wife, Hannah White Osborn, were part of the Salem Meeting House. There home was part of the Underground Railroad. This information came from their eldest daughter, Emma, who was my great grandmother. She could remember as a small child runaway slaves coming to their house and her father concealing a man under a load of hay and taking him north to the next station. The man later wrote the family from Canada.

Since you have posed the question of ancestors in Salem, I will now begin to search. Since I have been working on my ancestry for the last 2 years this is as good a place to start another search as any. I do live in North Carolina and have relatives that lived in Winston Salem, North Carolina which is about a 45 minute ride from where I live. Thanks for that tip.

You have done a tremendous amount of work on this family. It is so wonderful to see so much info compiled in one place.
I have been researching George Grimes for years. He was the son of Ephraim Grimes and Phebe Eddy. He was credited for discovering gold in the Boise Basin in 1862 and killed by Indians. I am still trying to ascertain for certain George's wife's maiden name for sure. We think she was a Maryetta Miller but can't confirm that.

My grandmother, Williamena Elizabeth Garretson, was the daughter of John G. Garretson (son of Joel C. Garretson) and Laura Geneva Bartlett (daughter of William Bartlett and his first wife Louisa Hampton.) I was excited to see the photo of the building housing William Bartlett's clothing store. This was new information for me. I am wondering if you have any additional information about him. I see that the Tyner brothers took over the business. I believe they would be the nephews of William as his sister, Mary F., married George W. Tyner in 1855.

I am teaching the subject of abolition and the URR to 4th graders in south Florida, and find your information and photos to be helpful in allowing them to imagine the time and subject more fully. I believe that my grandfather, a Frazer, was born to the Cedar Creek Church community in 1889, and I feel that personal connection as well. How I wish I had known to ask him more questions when I was a child.

I was given the responsibility of the geneology for my family's history. My relatives, 'Hocketts' were members of Salem and traveled with Henderson Lewelling to Oregon. I have the copies of those journals. I'm looking for more information to complete the full story and make sense of the loose ends. This was great information. The Horticulturists side makes sense. I was wondering how the Lewellings got those apple trees from Salem, IA. Now the background makes a lot of sense. I'm mot sure how Henderson had a nursery business in Milwaukee when he lived in the Oregon Territory?

I think I am a descendant of this line of Whites but my information is incomplete. My father was Ralph Linn White 1897-1983, son of Ralph Brown White 1871-1940, son of Henry Wesley White 1826-abt 1874, son of Abraham White 1795-1852, son of Henry White 1763-1827, possibly son of Josiah 1705-1780. I hope to learn more about this family. Apparently they separated from the Quaker faith early in the 19th century. Are there online or microfilmed records that I should view?

I am descended from Townsend, Wood, and Mosher Quakers who were members of the underground railroad in Ohio, and some of whom followed John Brown. My direct ancestors settled in Warren, Madison, and Polk Counties in Iowa in the 1860's, and cousins settled in other counties, including James Townsend, who kept the "Traveler's Rest" tavern in West Branch, Cedar County.
I don't know whether any of my direct or collateral relatives were involved in the UGR in Iowa. Eli Townsend and his wife, Abigail Mosher Townsend, who settled in Belmont Township near Sandyville in Warren County are one possibility, along with Levi Townsend, Eli's father, who was widowed and lived with other children in Des Moines and other places.
Perhaps you know of other resources I could consult. Any help would be appreciated.
