Thank you for the website linking Mathers. Our genealogy was lost from my father's possessions when he died. We are on a quest to locate any information that will assist us in our research.
Thank you!

I've traced my ancestry back to Richard Mather. I stuck trying to find documentation that has any proof of Timothy & Sarah Mather's son Reuben (1747-1845 or 1851), his son Elizur or Elezear Mather (1785-1869)died in NY - married to Prudence Powers and their daughter Laura Mather (1862-1892) born in NY and died in MI - married Allen Lounsberry. They also had a daughter Emily Lounsberry that married Charles Shaffer. I have the death certificate for Emily but it shows her mother as Laura Fry. I believe Fry comes from a sister of Laura's (Matilda) that was married to Thomas J Fry and Elizur was living with them for a period of time.

Hello, I haven't "visited" in awhile.....so i just thought I'd drop in and say "Hello' to ALL my "kinsmen" on the Mather side. My real DAD (Russell John Stark) & my brothers are direct descendants of Timothy Mather. Just want to say "Merry Christmas" to All & that, like our Gggggggggggggrandfather, Richard Mather, I am called to the Christian Ministry (independent-Bible-believing Baptist) and teach (just as he did) that the Holy Bible is literally true and is TRUSTWORTHY in ALL MATTERS OF FAITH & PRACTICE. Have a very nice day everyone....

If any Mather's have any Northumberland family connections.....chances are that we will be related. Best wishes.............Ross

Hi, Thank you for the post on Freeman Mathers. My dad personally new him. He was Orne's brother (my dads grandpa). My dad must be your second cousin. How cool....that you are my third cousin. I have done some research and found out a couple of things:
1) Varnum could not have been a loyalist since he was under 10 years old when the war with Britan broke out.
2) His son Stephan wasn't born for 20 years later so he had never served the British.
3) The land from Talbot was given to Abigail Washburn (Steven's American wife)....It came from her father who was a loyalist. His name was Ebenezer Washburn. I am very relieved and proud to say that no Mather in our line was ever a loyalist!! Ebenezer convinced young Steven Mather to sell the land for profit. Steven was murdered during the sale and James his young son was stuck in Canada.
4) More remarkable to the research was that (please read on :)......Varnum was named after his great grandmother and his great uncles....His great grandmother was Hannah Varnum.....below is a description of her brother, father and nephew.......(It was Hannahs daughter that married a Noyes....she was Sarah Noyes.....she had John Noyes Mather....who then had VArnum Mather....here is why he was called Varnum
VArnums great great grandpa: (via Sarah Noyes....whose mother was Hannah Varnum)
Republican State House of Representatives 1781 - 1786 State Senate 1786 - 1795 1817 - 1821 US Congressman from Mass 1795 - 1811 Speaker of House 1807 - 1811 US Senator 1811 - 1817 Pres. pro tem 1813 Justice of Peace 1788 - 1818 Chief Justice, Court of Sessions 1807 - 1811 Member of Governor's Council 1787 - 1792 Sheriff of Middlesex Co (declined) 1794 Ran for Lt Gov of Mass 1808 Ran for Gov of Mass 1813 !Ser: Pvt - Battle of Lexington under Capt Russell Capt - 1 Jan 1776 Dracutt Minuetman 29 Sept 1779 Battle of Burgoyne Col - 4 April 1787 7th Bat 3rd Div Mass Milita Big-Gen 2nd Bat 3rd Div, Mass Milita Maj-Gen 3d Div Mass. Militia.
Joseph Bradley Varnum, (1750-1821), served as a minute man, 1775, as captain in the Burgoyne campaign, 1777, and as commissioner, 1781. He was a member of the convention that framed the State constitution and served many terms in the General Court. He was born and died in Dracut.

Party: Republican

VARNUM, Joseph Bradley, (brother of James Mitchell Varnum), a Representative and a Senator from Massachusetts; born in Dracut, Middlesex County, Mass., January 29, 1750 or 1751; largely self-taught; farmer; served in the Revolutionary Army; member, State house of representatives 1780-1785; member, State senate 1786-1795; delegate to the State convention that ratified the Federal Constitution in 1788; justice of the court of common pleas; chief justice of the court of general sessions; elected to the Fourth and to the eight succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1795, to June 29, 1811, when he resigned, having been elected Senator; Speaker of the House during the Tenth and Eleventh Congresses; chairman, Committee on Elections (Fifth Congress); elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1811 to fill the vacancy in the term commencing March 4, 1811, and served from June 29, 1811, to March 3, 1817; served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Thirteenth Congress; chairman, Committee on Militia (Fourteenth Congress); delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1820; member, State senate 1817-1821; died in Dracut, Mass., September 21, 1821; interment in Varnum Cemetery.
5) He abolished slavery in Massachusetts and later in Conneticut
6)VArnum's great great uncle (or maybe great uncle):
James Mitchell Varnum (December 17, 1748 – January 9, 1789) was an American legislator, lawyer, general[1] in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and a pioneer to the Ohio Country.[2][3][4][5][6] "The career of Gen. Varnum was active, but brief. He graduated at twenty; was admitted to the bar at twenty-two; entered the army at twenty-seven; resigned his commission at thirty-one; was member of Congress the same year; resumed practice at thirty-three, and continued four years, was elected to Congress again at thirty-seven; emigrated to the west at thirty-nine, and died at the early age of forty."[7]

James Mitchell Varnum was "a man of boundless zeal, of warm feelings, of great honesty, of singular disinterestedness; and, as to talents, of prodigal imagination, a dextrous reasoner, and a splendid orator. He was a man made on a gigantic scale; his very defects were masculine and powerful, 'and, we shall not soon look upon his like again.'"[8
Pretty wonderful more cool linage for the Mathers....that through Sarah Noyes....her mother Hannah Varnum (who married F. Noyes) and had Sarah (who married Capt. Timothy Mather) we have this new linage.........I am still researching because Hannah had a cousin named Benjamin Franklin Varnum and one named George Washington Varnum who was born in 1779 in the same time and place as George Washington was living as a young man (Lynchburg Virginia, USA) it is possible that Varnum's third cousins were connected to President Washington (George) and to Benjamin Franklin
I also found out that it was common for the aboriginal Indians in Canada to try to capture the freed slaves and African American Servants who moved to Canada.....there is some evidence that Varnum took his paid (of course freed) servants who were of African decent with him to Canada (where slavery was abolished 3 years before their arrival)....they may have been robbed not just for the goods they carried but the Aboriginal Canadian Indians may have been trying to take his hired African American help as slaves in Canada....and Steven died trying to save them....just as his father's name sake (see the Varnums above) spent their lives working to abolish slavery
Thanks Ruthlyn Mathers Scott

Descendant of William Henshaw, Joshua and Daniel Henshaw
Comments:
Katherine Henshaw and her mother, both widowed
by the same stroke, lived but seven years
longer, and died within ten weeks of each other,
in the year 1651. Tlie two little boys, then seven
and nine years of age, were left orphans, without
near relatives, and with an itnmense inheritance.
Here is an inventory of the real estate which they
inherited from the Houghtons, not counting the
property of their father. It comes from the Herald's
College :
Wavertree Hall, Lands iu Liverpool,
Penketh Hall, Lands in Ellell,
Lands in Penyngton, Lands in Carltou,
Lands in Worsely, Lands in Sowerby,
Newton in Mackinfield, Lands in Warton,
Lands in Knowlsley, Houses in LancasterSuch an estate and such young heirs needed, of
course, some one to care for them. The nearest
relative and doubtless right heir on their mother's
side, Peter Ambrose, removed to Wavertree Hall,
and entered upon his fateful stewardship. The
temptation was too great. Only those two little
boys between himself and the goal of his long-cherished
desires !
After two )-ears of administration, he made needful
arrangements, and on pretense of sending them
away to school, placed them on board a vessel
bound for New England. It was an easy abduction,
for Liverpool had already an active trade with
Boston. They xccre scut to ilie Rev. Richard Mather,
in Dorchester, Massachnsclls Bay! The family tradition
says that a large sum of money was sent with
them, for which no account was exacted.
To explain t'leir absence, Peter Ambrose gave
out that he had placed them at a school near Loudon.
Time went on, but Wavertree Hall saw its
young masters no more. Time still went on. Several years of absence could be accounted for by the
necessities of education and of travel; then the
Great Plague broke out opportunely, and Peter
Ambrose announced that they had both died of
that disease.
It was in 1653 that the two boys were thus abducted
and deported, and reported dead at the ages
respectively of nine and eleven years, two years
alter the death of their mother and grandmother.
It was a rigorous fate. The Pilgrim Fathers
themselves had come over only about thirty years
before, and the feeble colonies were still struggling
for existence against poverty, hardship and the
savage. Friendless and helpless, stripped of their
all, these two children were plunged from affluence
to poverty, from the tenderness of loving women
lost to them not so very long before, to the sinister
kindness and actual treachery of pretended friends.
The boys grew up in Dorchester and married
there. The Rev. Richard Mather did not go to his
account until the elder of the two was twenty-sevenyears of afje. A word from him would have righted
their bitter wrong, but that word was never spoken.
The following extract from a letter written me
bj- my brother-in-law, Mr. F. W. Henshaw, of
Montreal, Canada, will .show the estimate placed
upon the Rev. Richard Mather by the Henshaw
family : " My belief is that he was in collusion with
the wretch, Ambrose, in defrauding the two boys

Henshaws. His silence as to their history, which
he unquestionably knew all about, is strong enough
evidence of his complicity in the dastardly act."

Hi,
I must be a part of the Mather-Schaffner clan as I am listed on their genealogy. I live in Kansas City, Mo. But I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin not far from Waupaca County.

I'm gathering documents and applying to the DAR. and since I'm a direct descendant of Richard Mather I thought I would go for Dames of the Commonwealth or whatever it is called.

If I could piggyback on some of your research and documentation I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm so impressed with your website and the family tree links. Congratulations for all the hard work. I look forward to hearing from one of you.

Hi this message is for Ruth, I posted my family history...then found your 2011 post in which you write;

"Does Any one know why Varnum went to Canada? Does any one know why Stephan Mathers (Capt. Timothy Mathers) great-grandson changed the mather name and added an "s". Why did Varnum travel to England to have Stephen?"

These are my direct descendants as well. I was unaware that Varnum went back to England to have Stephen. From my work on ancestry.ca, I thought he was born in the USA, but that could have been an assumption. I will try and follow that lead up with more research.

I live in London ON so of course there are plenty of Mathers clan around here. Were you at the large family reunion many years ago? Around 1997, 1998? My grandmother's maiden name is Mathers (Idell), and her father was Freeman Mather who was great grandson of Stephen Mathers.

Did you know that Stephen Mathers was murdered by horse thieves at age 46? He had a young family at the time. I have a picture of him too.

I also have information about the land that Stephen Mathers was given. I grew up right there, and still drive by where the old farm would have been very often. We knew that he came from America because he had to take an oath and serve in the militia in order to obtain land from Colonel Thomas Talbot. It is my guess that Canada offered affordable farm land, and perhaps this is why Stephen made the move to Canada. (Also, perhaps a Loyalist?)

My mother and I are wondering why he added the "s" to the mather name..Maybe he thought it had a better ring to it :).

If anyone wants to share information, feel free to email me.

Hello all!
I am descended from Reverend Richard Mather, and his son, Timothy Mather (older brother of Increase Mather). Some generations later Varnum Mather's son, Stephen Mather (born around 1794) migrated from the USA to Southwestern Ontario Canada. It was there he added an "S" to Mather. Three more generations later is my great grandfather, Freeman Mathers. Anyone else have Canadian Mather/Mathers roots?

My Grandfather was Cotton Seth Mather,of (Clinton?) Iowa. His family moved to Detroit at some point,I am not sure when, though my Dad's cousin in Iowa did a family history many years ago, which I have a copy of.

Seth married Doris Bradley (of Vermont?) in Detroit. They had two children, Irene (Touzeau) currenly living in Florida, with her two sons; and James Richard Mather, my father, born October 30, 1927 and deceased March 18, 2012. James married Patricia Wilson Fette, in Detroit, and they had nine children, of which I am the 8th: Suzanne, Linda, William, Mary Rose, Jane, Charles, Thomas, Ann, and James. We were raised in Farmington, Michigan. Our mother, James Richard Mather's widow, Patricia Mather, currently lives in Novi, Michigan. Hi, This is one of the best designed family tree websites I have researched.
I'm in Western Australia and I research my Morcom/Morcomb/be, Marcombe & Morkam ancestry from Cornwall to Wales, then to Australia & U.S.A.
I came looking for the New York "James Mather - Ruth.B.Morcombe" link which I find you have as "Boardman", but noted a source also mentioning possibly as Morcombe.
I have quite a lot of background on Ruth.B. Morcombe's parentage, so I will try to find further source confirmation on whether I have the correct Mather linkage.
Ruth's family were notable in Freemasonry & newspaper publishing/editorial circles Iowa & San Francisco, CA.
Keep up the good work.

Hi (This is a non working email address that I have used to post my questions due to the warnings about spam, so please post your responses on this site if possible. Thank you so much.) Does Any one know why Varnum went to Canada? Does any one know why Stephan Mathers (Capt. Timothy Mathers) great-grandson changed the mather name and added an "s". Why did Varnum travel to England to have Stephen? We live in Virginia USA, North Carolina USA, and Pensylvania, USA, and we are from Orne Mathers of Parkhill Ontario. His son Norman W. Mathers "Roper" was my wonderful, wonderful grandfather who passed away in about 2003. His widow Millie Mathers is still living. Over 250 first and second cousins attended Roper's funeral in Parkhill Ontario. My father had a permanent teaching certificate in Parkhill Ontario and taught many of his first, second, and third cousins there in Parkhill. Millie has a daughter who is in nursing. My father is Dr. Norman W. Mathers (Reverend, book publisher, author, and college professor). Hello to all. I'm not sure there's any practical way to prevent all spam bots from collecting email addresses. As we defeat them with one method, they get smarter & find another. I have investigated various methods of preventing spam bots from collecting the email address from this site and will try a few when I get back from vacation. It is possible I will have to delete this guestbook if the problem persists. In the meanwhile, don't open anything from Nigeria. We have no relatives in Nigeria. Also, there's a new one with the subject line "Mather Story". Delete that also. And NEVER click on any link inside an email if you don't know who it is from. Thank you to all who have signed the guestbook. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Ruth

Ruth, hi, I had contacted you before re: my grandfather Vernon Kenney Mather. I thought he was married to Nannie Williams Mather of Ft. Worth. He had 4 sons, Vern Jr.who died in a well at age 5 and then there was Robert, Edward and William (my dad). I am trying to find out more info about my grandfather Vernon and his wife and help you add to the decendents. My grandparents died before I was born, so I don't have much info about them. I just had to clean out my dad's house and found tons of pics dating back to the early 1900's, but unfortunately they aren't people I can identify. I do have pics of Vernon and his wife, Nannie (who I was named after) and pics of my dad and his brothers, if any of that will help you. I'd like to know more but don't really know where to look. I also found a book of Mather lineage from 1550 to 1999, if any of that would help you. I would be happy to copy it and send it to you. Nancy

Hello Ruth and all - Please be aware!

Myself and other family members who have posted on this site have received an email scam requesting Mather family information.

The email comes from THE NIGERIA MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND TOURISM and the subject line reads "Story of Mather's"

Apparently spammers have come onto this great site and collected all of our email addresses.

Please carefully check your emails!

Ball; their daughter Lulu Belle Rex Ball who married Finney Charles Brumbach; their son Marion Rex Brumbach who was my father: Beverley Rex Brumbach. My son's name is Robert Rex Nussbaum, and his son's name is Spencer Rex Nussbaum. So, as you can see the Rex name has survived the generations! I remarried, so my name is now Beverley Rex Rouede.

Richard jumped ship in Australia and later married Sarah McCann and that is how I came to be a 3rd generation born in Australia! Great site. Marvellous work you have done!

Hello again. Just browsed around your site a little more and found that you have a death date for Martha Elizabeth Mather as 1913. My family records showed 1904. She was working a farm in Oregon with her two children. She developed TB and her sister, Jessie Benton Mather Colman, came to get her and the children to take them back to Ill. Martha died en route in or near Denver. Supposedly, sister Jessie took her back to Il for burial. I've found her husband, parents, fa-in-law and two babies that died in infancy in the same cemetery. But, alas,
no Martha. I'm curious as to the 1913 date. I would love to know what info you might have. I do have photos of all of the above. Thanks for your time.

I was born into the Mather family and have traced roots back to a Richard Mather in 1600. I was born in England and am descended from a load of Puritan Mathers from Lancashire particularly Billinge and Liverpool areas. My father always maintained connections to the Mathers the other side of the pond and working back to 1600 and the area in which they lived, it is highly likely. However, there were about 6 Richard Mathers in the early 1600s. Anyone out there done any more research that could help please?

My father is Paul William Mather, son of Roy Elmer Mather of line you label Schaffner-Mather. Thanks so much for keeping this website, I've been trying to research my Mather ancestors for a while now and your site provided the missing links. My Dad is getting on in years and was happy to hear the names of older relatives that jogged his memory. I am in the process of checking facts and years with my Dad to provide you some further info and the current generations of children of Paul and Leo.

How do I join this site, and is there a tutorial for using it?

My name is Brian Alan Mather, Howard Lewis Mather is my great grandfather who (according to my grandfather David Howard Mather, Sr. -- Howard's only son) died in a hit and run car accident in Buffalo NY.

Howard also had a sister named Blanche (daughter of Lewis P Mather) born in 1903. Details on Blance are few and far between, but I do have photos of her.

Howard Lewis's wife (my great grandmother) Josephine Patricia Elizabeth Smugeresky (Born 1908) is still alive and turned 100 years old this past October 19th in Tempe Arizona.

Howard's only son (David Howard Mather, Sr) is my granfather (born: Apr 15, 1932 in Camden County NJ), married Frances Cohen of London England. They had 3 children: Mark David Mather (died within 1 hour of birth in 1952), David Howard Mather, Jr -- my father (born: May 17 1955), and Jacqueline Jean Mather (born: Jul 3 1957, died May 17 2005 - breast cancer).

My father, David Howard Mather, Jr. married Karen Ann Shinn. They had 2 children, Mandy Elizabeth Mather (born Feb 22, 1975) and me, Brian Alan Mather (born Oct 30, 1977). I am sending you this email on my birthday :)

I married Kathryn Rebecca Hanley, and our first born son, Jackson David Mather was born May 24, 2007.

I would love to speak with you in greater detail about the Mather family history. According to your data on RootsWeb.com I think I may have just added 4 more generations to the Mather Family tree. I can be contacted at 210-843-5000, or via email at brian.mather@gmail.com

Thank you , once again, for having this wonderful website for us descendants of Richard Mather. One of my Stark ancestors (our Patriarch was A Mr. Aaron Stark, Sr. of New London (Windsor) Conn. 1608-1685) married a young lady who was a direct descendant of Timothy (the farmer) Mather. Being a "Bible-Christian" I count it a Honor to be so related to Richard and the rest of the Mather Family. God bless you for doing all this research on our Family. Sincerely In Christ, Pastor Michael Lee Bell (Stark) Romans 1:16.

Just wanting to say how much I have enjoyed your website here on our Mather Family. I am a direct descendant of Richard Mather thru his eldest son known as the "Farmer." I believe his first name was Timothy. Anyway I am your "cousin" through Timothy. Timothy's granddaughter married my direct ancestor Stark. (I am really a "Stark"). My parents divorced before \I was born and my Mother re-married Kenneth W. Bell and he adopted me giving me his surname. You might have read of my Patriarch--Mr. Aaron( Aron) Stark Sr. of Connecticut. He was known as "Major John Mason's man." He was also a veteran of the Pequot and King Phillip's Wars. Anyway being a teacher of American history as well as a Minister of the Gospel it is a real pleasure to have 'discovered" this wonderful website. sincerely, Pastor Michael L. Bell (Stark)

William Younghans (Wilhem Junhans) came to Nebraska and homestedded a farm 6 miles north and 3 miles west, then 1/2 mile north of Gothenberg, Neb.. The only thing left of the farm is the foundation of the house and a red brick silo with a few tree's. His son, Harry Christian Younghans, married Matilda Fredricka Osterberg. They had seven children. Bernice Julia, Dorothy Mayme, Helen Matilda, Leonard Albert, Irene Caroline, Mary Ann Ruth, and Robert Harry (my father). The first four children were born on a rental farm noth/east of Brady, Ne., close to the William Younghans farm. Around 1919, Harry purchased a farm 9 miles south/west of North Platte, Neb.. He farmed there until around 1947 where he moved into North Platte, semi-retired. At this time, my father, Robert H., took over the farming with my Grandfather helping up-into his late 80's. Robert married Betty Ilene Atterbery and had a son, William Robert Younghans. Betty passed-away in 1949. Robert remarried in 1950 to Virginia A. Fisher and had three more son's, Donald Alfred, Kenneth Leroy, and Harry Denton. Harry C. passed-away in 1980. Robert H. passed-away in 1975, due to a farm accident. Kenneth L. still works the same farm for our Mother, Virginia. My brother's and I all presently live in Lincoln County, around the North Platte, Neb. area. My address is William R. Younghans, 2024 N. Spur 56C, Hershey, Neb. 69143 Seeing these pictures brought back some old memories. Thank you to who-ever put this together.

I believe that my father's mother's maiden name was Mather. She died about 1963 in Wochester, New York. She had married Dayton Mallette and had one son, Lee Jay Mallette. She later married a Moore.
Does this sound at all like anything you have? My dad died 6 years ago and my mom died last October. I have found nothing on his family when we went through the house.
I got started on this tract tonight when I noticed that there was a Mather Campground at the Grand Canyon National Park.

I am new to the family tree program on ancestry.com, but have done quite a bit of family history work. My father was Spencer Bishop Montgomery, son of Geroge Samuel Montgomery and Mary Bishop Montgomery, whose brother was Robert Hamilton Bishop who settled in Kansas. My Uncle Bob (Montgomery) was, as you probably know, an avid genealogist and compiled the Bishop and Scott book that you must have (1950?). I have copies of Great-Grandmother Eliza Lyons diaries. In one of them she describes her extended visit to her sons in Kansas. The original diaries are in the archives of Miami University, but I have not yet been there to look at them. If you are interested in the Kansas material, I could copy it for you. Sincerely, Sally Montgomery

Hello Ruth Mather,

Just a quick note in case this doesn't reach you. I can write more later!
I have traced my Mather ancesters to Lowton, Winwick, Nr Warrington, England c 1740. I assume therefore there must be a connection to your Richard Mather!!!
I'm still in England. My maternal Grandfather is a Mather.
The earliest Mather I have is a John Mather b c1740 father of a Hugh Mather born 1767.
The two reasons for me contacting you, as a definate connection is not yet certain, are:
1 I see there is a Hugh Mather who has signed a document on your website. The document the 'Land Grant' on your 'Toxteth Church' photos. 'Hugh' isn't a common name. Could you give me more details about this doucument please. Where did you get it from? Do you have a 'transcribed' (is that the right word) version - readable? This Hugh could be my man!!
2 Have you thought about a DNA test of your male Mathers? I'm cosidering asking my grandad to do one. But its no good if he's the only one. I need a result to compare to, to see if there's a match. That would be really something if there was a proven trans-atlantic link.

Hope to hear from you very soon.

Best Wishes,

Simon.

During their life together they lived in New York, Florida, Virginia, and Rhode Island. They didn't have children, but they were extra special to me.

Name: Marion <msw7700@yahoo.com>

Comments:
I am named after my great-grandmother Marion Mather, who was the daughter of Charles B. Mather and Alice Moore. Charles was the son of Daniel Mather and Almira Jane Southworth (then on from there was Enos and Timothy). We also have a copy of the 1890 edition of the Mather book in our family, along with the ~1890s edition of the Southworth geneology.

Charles was actually named after his mother's first husband (C. Baldwin), who was killed in the Civil War before they had children (her second husband was Daniel Mather). Almira was still very close with the Baldwin family, so, with the approval of the Baldwins, she and Daniel decided to name their second son "Charles Baldwin."

Thank you for pulling this site together - it is marvelous, and must have required a good bit of work when initiated.

Hi! I recently met Amy Mather who told me about your research and website. I've done a bit on my own, and discovered a common link between my ancestors and the Mathers. He was Robert Hungerford, c. 1405-1459, who married Margaret Botreaux. Their daughter Katherine married Nicholas Leventhorpe, and their daughter Constance married Clement Cotton (c. 1475). A second daughter of Robert and Margaret Hungerford, Eleanor Alice, married Robert White II. My line comes down through the Whites.
So Cotton Mather and I have a common great-great-etc. grandfather. Your website is wonderful!

Ruth, I would like to chat with you regarding any information you may have in reference of the father of John T. Hibben. His mother's name is Sarah Ann Hibbins. The spelling was changed to Hibben by her children. I am descended from the brother of John T. whose name is George R. Hibben. I have visited the grave site of Artimous and John T. in Knightstown, IN, but have not been able to find a death certificate or obituary for John T.

Sarah Ann Hibbins lived in Galiopolis, Gallia county, OH and arrived there in 1835 with the two boys George and John T. I have looked for Sarah Ann's husband for some 35 years and have exhausted numerous leads. Looking at Joh T and Artimous was one such avenue and I am thrilled to know that you have a family organization.

My phone number is 505-792-4267. We now live in Albuquerque, NM. I have retired from Sears, Roebuck & Co. and live with my wife of nearly 45 years. Our ten children live in areas around the country.

Hoping to hear from you.

Could I ask to hear from anyone with biographical info. about Alonzo Clark Mather (1848-1941), a Chicago business man (b. in Farifield, NY) who wanted to build an electricity-producing bridge over the Niagara River at Buffalo in the 1890s? He left no direct descendants except a daughter, Martha J. (b. 1879), who never had children.

I would also like to hear about any of the following relatives of Alonzo:

nephew Jesse Mather Watkins
nephew Frank Alonzo Watkins
great nephew Jesse Mather Watkins, Jr.
cousin Richard B. Mather (lived in Kemmore, NY, 1941) or his daughter, Margaret Ann

Is anyone in touch with the Spindler family in Switzerland? Is there any info on what they did for a living through the centuries or any other trivia available?

I am desperately searching for the siblings of Fred Mathers circa 1800. RSVP ASAP. I am at wit's end as I am a direct descendant of Fred. His children were Matilda, Harry, and Edward who all came to Maine around 1850. Harry was my GGrandfather and we know of no other relatives other than the progeny from Harry and the children of Matilda and Joe Greaves. I am definately stuck somewhere in around Liverpool and at the birth of Frederick Mathers 1800.

This a great site. I have learned much! Has anyone seen the transcript of Richard Mather's journal of his voyage to New England (The "James" from Bristol 1635). It can be found at: www.nehgs.org. I have also done some research and found that several of our common ancesters came from that ship, also the "Lyon" in 1632 and the "Mary and John" in 1630. Has anyone else reserched these? The information I get on the internet is sometimes questianable, but, I will be happy to share what I have. Also, if anyone has any info on Harriet Adams, wife of Timothy Mather, please let me know.

I know that I am a member of the Mather family tree, and that it has been traced back to Cotton and Increase Mather, but I do not know any more than that. My mother is Betty Jane Mather, born Jul 20, 1962, and her father is James F. Mather III(?); I do not know my grandfather, and my mother has no more information than I do. The only other information I have is that my Great Grandmother commissioned a book of the early Mather Family History, and my mother was given a copy of it as a child, shortly before she lost touch with her paternal family. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated. I now have children of my own, and I would like to find out more about the Mather side of my family.

The site is GREAT!

I am the grandson of Claude Leon Mather, who was the son of Stanton Frederick Mather and Cora Belle (Cooley) Mather. I was born 1 Dec 1946 in Watertown, New York. I have worked many years on the family genealogy and have about 13,000 descendants of Rev. Richard Mather in my PAF5 program. I have just stumbled upon your site. It is very exciting to see how much work you have accumulated. I'm getting the impression that many contributors have donated their information. Obviously you have more than could be possibly collected from the usual publications and internet sources.
I'm looking forward to providing you with anything I can, and comparing all of your information with my own. I actually have about 38,500 people in the program. I have added generous numbers of family members who have married into our family. They may not be Mather descendants of John or Thomas, but they are related to at least some of the Mather family members. I haven't even had time to look yet but Rev. Richard's sister Elizabeth has become a major contributor to the family, especially in Northampton, MA.
I haven't seen a definitive inclusion of her in the family tree, other than my own. I'm curious to see how much you have done on he and her descendants.

Is this definitely the Mather family crest, or merely the personal crest and motto of Richard Mather? Though both differ, the two coat-of-arms do share a smiliar color scheme...

I am researching my wife's side of the family and came across your family tree on RootsWeb. There is a Mary Elizabeth Segrest (or Segrist) who married Henry Milton Mayfield. One of their children, Sarah Evaline Mayfield (born December 26, 1879), is my wife's great-grandmother. Feel free to email me, if you want.

Ruth: I have been tryig to locate information on Isadora Cooley, wife of John Newton Mather, Jr.. I have located a Isadora Cooley in the 1860 census, living with Henry Cooley, age 33, a Christianna, age 34, an Emily, age 13, a Mary, age 8, and Isadora, age 6. Do you have any information that would verify if this is the Isadora that married John, or that it is the wrong girl. Thanks. Bridgett

Wow, I love your site Ruth. There is so much great information here. Thanks for all your fine work. My greatgrandmother Kathrine Gallagher was wife of Frank Elbridge Mather, and I was wondering if anyone out there ever came across any photographs she did. I know she was a photo refinisher and later a photographer, but only have found personal photos of hers. Would you have any idea where I might find that type of information. Keep up the great work.

Hi folks,

Nice website by the way. Just a few questions.

1. My father is an identical twin, his brother is Richard Chippendale Mather. Son's of Sydney Mather. Any relation to those on your site?
2. My family has an extremely old 1600's Family Bible any interest in viewing this? It's in the hands of one of my cousins now, but should be easily accessed for photo's if there is an interest?

Well nice site and I hope to hear from you in the near future.

This is a very good web site. Thank you for the fine work. Have you linked to the sites with information on Rev. Richard Mather?

I have been trying to find a copy of the Lineage of Rev. Richard Mather locally, but find the connection to that book through this site - thanks.

When I put the date of birth of Lieut Joseph Mather 2/29/1686 into Family Tree Maker I received a note which stated that this was not a leap year which puts that date into question.

How well regarded is the accuracy of the book Lineage of Rev. Richard Mather?

Please let me know if you have any further information and if you would like the info on this line in the family I'll be happy to share.
