In the mid forties I was visiting my cousin, Billy Don Lawernce in Pine Ridge. We were sitting on the stoop of the Post Office. A car with Illinois plates on it pulled up and stopped. The driver inquired if we could tell him how to get to Pine Ridge. Billy Don told him this is it. The man got a funny look on his face and just took off. When Bill and I started walking back toward their house Dick Huddleston's dog started following. Nothing we done could get the dog to go back. When we got to their house Bill went and got a rag and put some "high life" on and rubbed it on the base of the tail of the dog. Needless to say the dog left in a big hurry.

My grandfather was Enoch Samuel Diffie and he was born in Ophir, Arkansas. He was a minister at Liberty Baptist Church in the early to mid 1920s. He died at the age of 40 in 1929. He was married to Jennie Nancy Collier also born in Ophir, Arkansas. I do not believe Ophir still exists and they lived in the Caddo Gap/Norman area. Both are deceased. I would so much like to communicate with or meet any of their relatives that might still be living in the Norman area. I plan to visit my grandfather's grave at the church cemetary when I visit. My grandmother is buried here in California. This is a wonderful website and I am so glad I found in during one of my many on-line searches.

Long a researcher of descendants of Robert Gaston of Lancaster Dist., SC, I had little on descendants of grandson Robert, son of Hugh Gaston of Green Co., IN. I descend from Hugh Gaston's brother James who was an early settler of Wayne Co, IL Recently I was asked about Gastons in Montague Co., TX about whom I knew little, but had long felt tied in to my line somehow. A clue led eventually to Montgomery Co. AR. I now believe that some of the Montague Co., TX Gastons came via Van Zandt Co. from Montgomery Co. AR and may descend from siblings of James Bullock Gaston. Thank you.

I don't know alot about my ancestors but I am trying to learn as much as I can, so I need all the help I can get. Here's about all I know: GG-GrandParents are Hiram Phelps and Sarah/Sallie Smith. G-GrandParents are Jasper Phelps and Martha Fryar. GrandParents are Fred Thomas Milligan and Clemmie Phelps (I am not sure that is her name that is just what Mama told me). Clemmie was also married to a J.C. Blackburn and a Pugh. She had children by all of them. Everyone who could tell me something has already passed on so now I've had to start from scratch. I had an uncle, Ben Milligan, who lived in Waldron. My Dad was the son of Jacob Ridenour/Ridenhour and Nora Hunter, I don't know much about Nora. They had 3 children, Luther Bruce (Daddy), Ola, who married a Craig and then Arthur Wiles and Dessie, who is buried in Weeks Cemetery. Daddy's 1st marriage was to a lady named, Martha Howze and they had a daughter named Thelma. That is about all I know about my family so anything anyone could tell me would be greatly appreciated.

I did a "google" search and your site came up. Very nice. Continue the great work!
One question..
What are some good ways to research the history of the barns on the site?
I have found that with the very old structures that there are seldom people in the area that remember anything about the builders or previos owners.
I am very new at this type of thing, but I find old barns facinating and am happy to think that others do to.

Apparently, I'm related to the Fryars and Singletons and Wilhites who settled the area early in the 1800's. It's all very interesting to me and I do appreciate all the work that's been done thus far. My grandfather was Jule(s) Wilhite who I hadn't seen since I was about 3 back in 1958. I don't even remember him, but I was told by my grandmother Sarah, his wife (now deceased), that he liked to play with his grandkids, including my sister and me. Family ties seem so easily broken these days. I guess that's why I'm curious -- I'd like to know where I'm from -- maybe get a sense of belonging.

My husband's great-grandfather, Thomas L. Horrell, was born in Montgomery County about 1848. He was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Wells) Horrell. The family migrated to Lampasas County, Texas in the 1850's. There has been much written about Tom and his brothers. They were involved in a feud with Pink Higgins and his family and had many other contacts with the law. Tom and his brother, Mart, were killed December 15, 1878 while in jail in Meridian, Texas. I have really enjoyed the site and it has been most helpful while researching my husbands ancestry for my children. However, like most people I rely upon facts. Legend and family stories are fine but do not denote absolute facts as to a person belonging to a particular family. It is a fact that my husbands ancestors, the Willhites and Fryars removed themselves from Tippah County Mississippi and settled in Montgomery County Arkansas. However, I have found a few things that have puzzled me when it comes to his maternal grandmother. According to the picture of Doctor Franklin Singleton and his family. The inscription beneath the picture give his wife and children's names and probable year of birth. What is puzzleing to me is the marriage index for Montgomery County Arkansas give dates of marriage for Nancy Jane Wilhite and D. F. (Doctor Franklin) Singleton and thier daughter Catherine (who married W. G. Fryar) as being in the year 1877. How could Catherine b. 1860 be their daughter when she was seventeen years old when they married? The 1900 census which lists Doctor F. Singleton and wife Nancy J. shows they have been married twent three years (1877 as marriage index shows), that she had four children with four still living (all of them listed on the census). This is quite puzzleing to me and hope that it may be resolved in the future. Your site is a great site and the hard work you have done is quite remarkable. Keep up the good work. Bonnie Willhite

If there is a shred of caring out there about family history, then why won't ANYONE share what they MUST know about my John Belcher who is on the 1880 Montgomery County census (Mount Ida)with his wife Ann Baggs and their first born. Why did the hand-written marriage information in your local Montgomery County history book (for which I paid $75) list Ann as Ann Boggs instead of Ann Baggs as is on the original marriage record. I have contacted numerous people, and I can't understand why it is "hush-hush". Any help is appreciated but totally unexpected. In fact you probably won't let this be listed, which will confirm exactly what I've already said.

I've been tracking my ANDERSONs back to AR from Texas -- and finally found them here. Would be very interested in learning more about the family of Allen ANDERSON (son of William G, brother of Newton, I believe). Also like to know about Allen's wife, Mary Weldon. Is she the Mary Weldon who was living with the James Farr family in the 1850 census? If so, what's the connection between her and the Farrs? If this isn't her, who does she belong to? Lots of questions. But at least a few answers. ANd what a terrific site. Thank you very very much.

I am researching tons of names, including the following (not all of these were from Arkansas): BELCHER, HOYLE, SOUTHERLAND, on my father's side. Paternal Grandmother was Ethel Candace Hoyle, married to McEwen (sp) Belcher est. 1893 or prior. He died abt 1910 and is buried in Oakman Cemetery in Oklahoma. She remarried to Jonathan VOYLES in 1911. Can't find ANYTHING on Grampa Belcher before he married her. He was born in Henderson County, Texas about 1850. If anyone knows anything about him, please email me.
Also researching JONES, WHISNANT, CRUMP on my mother's side.
Especially looking for info on Margaret Mahalia (Brown?), first wife of a Mr. Whisnant (est.1845) and later married to Zacharriah M. PETTIT (1865). May have been married to a Thomas Hammock before Whisnant. She had 6 known children by Whisnant (including Robert James, my grandfather) and at least one by Pettitt.
If anyone can provide any information on these families, please email me.
